Fire Emblem: The Binding Blade

Role

Trec is a simple mercenary from Ilia, working in Lord Zelot's squad. Some time before the game's events, he is chosen to accompany his captain toOstia, where they are to fight forLycia againstBern. However, once they reach the march, they discover thatthe Ostian leader has died and a rebellion aims to surrender the city—and Lycia's remaining forces—to Bern. They refuse to work for the rebels; onceRoy's army reaches the city, Zelot and Trec immediately enter the battlefield to help them, being accepted by Roy after talking to the young lord. Together with his captain and his friend Noah, Trec works for Roy during the whole campaign.

After Bern is defeated and the war is over, Trec keeps working—and falling asleep whenever possible—in Zelot's mercenary group. Although he does not talk about his performance as a mercenary, the stories about his prowess are well known.

Analysis

This character analysis section may not be accurate to every player's experience.

Trec joins in Chapter 7 as a level 4Cavalier. His class is his greatest advantage. Cavalier is among the best unpromoted classes inThe Binding Blade. With high movement,Canto, rescue-drop utility, and access to two weapon types, it is both mobile and versatile.

Trec's greatest issue is his underwhelming base stats. While there is rarely a downside to deploying more mounted units, Trec has no advantages over his peers. His stats will be comparable to or worse thanAlen andLance's, and mediocre by themselves. Trec's standout stat is defense, but it is only 1 higher thanNoah's and 2 higher than Alen and Lance's. He is also too slow to double enemies and faster foes will double him instead.

Trec's base weapon ranks are terrible – E-rank swords and D-rank lances. Alen and Lance joined with these weapon ranks in Chapter 1, but have been able to raise them in the meantime.Noah, who joins in the same chapter as Trec, has a base C-rank in swords and a D-rank in lances. Having a good sword rank is helpful in theWestern Isles, and Trec does not have it.

Trec also joins at a low base level of 4, and once again compares poorly to his peers in that aspect. Noah's base level is higher by 3, and a trained Alen/Lance will also be closer to promotion. This is important because thePaladin promotion is among the best promotions in the game. It grants +1 weapon rank in swords and lances, +1 movement, significant increases to all stats, and E-rank axes. This promotion improves Trec's mediocre stats, making him a much better unit, but getting him there is time-consuming because he must gain at least 6 levels.

Even if Trec reaches level 10, theKnight Crest is among the most competitive promotion items in the game. Alen, Lance, and Noah all gain a lot from promotion, and they all have advantages over Trec. This leaves Trec in a poor spot. There in only oneKnight Crest available beforePerceval's recruitment, and all three other Cavaliers are better candidates for promotion. Their stats and weapon ranks are better, and they reach level 10 more easily.

With that all said, Trec is still a solid filler unit. He has movement higher than infantry, and having two weapon types allows him to manipulate the weapon triangle. He does not even have to fight to be useful, because he has rescue-drop utility – he can carryRoy to the seize point, for instance.

Personality

Trec has a very carefree personality, and doesn't like to think too deeply about things.[1] Despite being a mercenary knight, Trec is very prone to falling asleep in the middle of battle, much to the chagrin of his commander Zelot.[2] He can be very absent-minded, even forgetting his own name at times.[3] Despite his carefree disposition and absent-minded nature, Trec is shown to be rather emotionally intelligent at times, being able to comfort Melady's concern about being an enemy defector in their support,[4] and correctly deducing that she had a lover in Bern.[5]

As evidenced by his dreams, Trec wants nothing more than to be praised by his commander Zelot,[6] and being able to sleep all day.[7][8] He also enjoys ice fishing, even though he doesn't catch anything.[9]

Endings

Treck, Peaceful Knight
Short: Continued life as a mercenary knight.

Long: Trec remained in Zelot's group, where he continued to fight as a mercenary. Although he always was sleeping half the time, in battle, he would demolish all those who dared stand in his path. Trec himself never talked about his performance, but stories about him reached the ears of many.
