My fondest wish is to return this land to what it was in the days of Dáinn and Njörun. ...Even if it damns me to the deepest pit of Hell.
— Travant

Travant (Japanese:トラバントTrabant) was the king ofThracia during the era of theGrannvale Empire's rise, and afull-blooded descendant of the CrusaderDáinn and inheritor ofGungnir. A prominent figure in the strife facing the Thracian Peninsula, he played a key role in the downfall of theMunster District and was responsible for the deaths ofQuan andEthlyn ofLeonster in theAed Massacre, but was subsequently cowed into submission to the Grannvale occupation of the District led byBloom. DuringSeliph's revolution against Grannvale in Grann 777, Travant led Thracia in opposition to Seliph's invasion of the Peninsula, seeking to reunify the Thracian Peninsula as one nation.

Biography

Path to the Aed Massacre

During theAgustrian civil war, Travant was hired by KingChagall to provide reinforcements for his army in resisting Sigurd, and so he deployed a unit of wyvern riders led byPapilio followingEldigan's execution; as soon as Papilio lost the battle, he lost interest in helping Chagall any further and left.

In Grann 761, Travant learned (either directly or indirectly) fromVeld of theLoptr Church[1] of the passage ofQuan ofLeonster, his wifeEthlyn and hisLanceritter across theAed Desert, and set out with a force of fourteen ThracianWyvern Riders in pursuit. Slowed down as Quan's army was by the desert sand, Travant and his men quickly overpowered and slaughtered all of them, an event later known as theAed Massacre. Upon finding that Quan's infant daughterAltena had been travelling with them, Travant took Altena andGáe Bolg back with him to Thracia; before he left, he entrustedMagorn with the command of the Thracian unit and tasked them with attackingSigurd's army as they crossed the Aed Desert en route toGrannvale. In the intervening years, Travant raised Altena as his own daughter alongside his biological son,Arion.

Alliance with Grannvale

Shortly after the Aed Massacre, with the defenses of the District depleted and vulnerable, Travant led the Thracian army in a full-scale assault on the north, besieging the city of Munster, who fought with the aid of the Connacht, Ulster and remaining Leonster armies. Partway through the battle, while the Thracian army and Travant waited to observe, the Connacht army under GeneralRaydrik turned on Leonster at the Great River of Thracia, slaying KingCalf, obliterating its army and ensuring the fall of the Munster District to Thracia. Travant's hold on the peninsula's north did not last long, as the newly-christenedGrannvale Empire responded to a plea for reinforcements fromUlster, soundly defeating Thracia's army and forcing it to retreat.[2] The Munster District came under the rule of theFriege family, was renamed the North Kingdom of Thracia, and DukeBloom of Friege was instated as its king. Although Thracia retained its independence, Travant was forced into alliance with Grannvale, albeit a reluctant alliance on his part.

In Grann 776, Travant and Altena were guided by the Thracian knightMerlock to the valley in whichHannibal's mansion was situated, in order to observe the approach of an alleged bandit mob assaulting the locals (in reality,Leif's group seeking refuge under Hannibal's roof). When Altena noted there was no real reason for him to personally visit the situation, he remarked that it was advisable for him to know of his nation's events and that he enjoyed traveling with his children. After briefly telling her of his vision of a prosperous future for Thracia, he and Altena departed, leaving Merlock in charge of fighting the "bandits".

In Grann 777, following his defeat atUlster, Bloom sent requests to Travant for reinforcements againstSeliph's liberation army; Travant ignored these calls, intending to leave Grannvale and Seliph to weaken each other and leave themselves open to being defeated by Thracia.[3] His plans, however, backfired withthe defeat of Bloom atConnacht and Seliph's subsequentmarch on Thracia. In preparation for Seliph's march on Thracia, Travant forced GeneralHannibal into co-operation by having his adoptive sonCoirpre/Charlot held hostage by another commander,Distler.

Following Altena learning and confronting him about her true heritage, he passed onGungnir and the fate of Thracia's people to his sonArion before setting out to confront Seliph personally, explaining himself as having grown tired of the conflict and wanting to end it by handing himself over, if not without a fight.[4] In the following battle, he was killed.

Fire Emblem: Thracia 776

Role

Travant appears in the opening cutscene ofChapter 9 with Altena andMerlock, the chapter's boss. Travant later appears inChapter 14, bringing a group of soldiers against Tarrah helmed byMcCloy. Travant explained to McCloy that he should pretend to help the empire's forces while only helping them minimally, and then once the empire's forces were weakened to take over Tarrah for themselves. Personality

As is inevitable from one raised in as harsh a nation as Thracia, Travant was blunt, cunning and ruthless, willing to go to any means to further his cause, including hiring himself and his army out as mercenaries;[5] he was not, however, totally committed to his mercenary work and had no interest in staying around to die for a lost cause.[6] He held a strong enmity toward Leonster's royalty, given their status as the primary obstacle between him and the realization of his ambitions, but nonetheless saw the value of raising a scion of the family –Altena – as his own if only for access toGáe Bolg, though he was loath to admit it to his subordinates. Though he cared for both his true son Arion and Altena, he was more than ready to tell them to stop questioning him if he did not appreciate their advice.

Travant was above all else thoroughly committed to the future of Thracia, seeking to improve the quality of life of his people through the reunification of the peninsula.[7] He was well aware of the nature of his methods, and considered himself to be willing to be condemned by history if it meant the well-being of Thracia in the future.[8] Nonetheless, he and his views were popular among the Thracian army, who saw his way as Thracia's road to salvation.[9]

Travant: King of Thracia
The Kingdom of Thracia was founded by the crusader Dáinn. Much of its territory is mountainous, making it unsuitable for farming, so the country supports itself by dispatching its soldiers to serve as mercenaries instead. Today we'll be talking about the king, Travant!Ever since he was a young man, Travant dreamed of seizing the fertile lands of the northern Thracian peninsula, but his ambitions were kept in check by the Kingdom of Leonster, home of the inheritors of the Gáe Bolg and an elite order of knights. However, Travant eventually got hold of some information about the movements of Leonster's army. Seizing the opportunity, he ambushed and defeated Prince Quan. It seemed as if Travant's dream to unify the peninsula under his rule was within reach at last…That was when the Grannvale Empire intervened, blocking Thracia's advance. Travant did not flinch, however, and to this day, he continues to fight astride his wyvern, seeking to claim more prosperous land for his people, and to forge for them a peaceful and stable future.

  1. "Manfroy: Make sure that you kill him. If you don't, our efforts of assassinating Quan would be for nought.
Veld: ...They still think Travant is the man responsible for Quan's death...
Manfroy: Hahaha...pathetic fools. Thracia doesn't have the means of getting accurate information on Leonster... Taking advantage of Travant's ambitions to make Northern and Southern Thracia kill each other... Your plan has been a marvelous success.
    " —Manfroy andVeld,Fire Emblem: Thracia 776
  2. "However, anticipating an attack, the Kingdom of Ulster had requested reinforcements from House Friege of the Grannvale Empire, and after a long time they arrived to the Thracian peninsula. However, terror came with them; namely, a group of mercenaries linked to the Loptrians. The Thracian army had the momentum, but had to retreat in the face of House Friege's prized Mage Knight squad's and the mercenary squad's offensive. Noticing he was at a terrible disadvantage, King Travant reluctantly withdrew from the Munster District. House Friege stationed itself at the north of the district, effectively turning it into a territory of the Grannvale Empire.""Leonster's Fall" from theFire Emblem: Thracia 776 Illustrated Works, translated by Serenes Forest,Retrieved: November 21, 2013
  3. "Pay Bloom no heed, Arion. The Empire and the rebels are best left to break themselves on each other for now. We'll mop up the leftovers once they're nice and weak." — Travant,Fire Emblem: Genealogy of the Holy War
  4. "Travant: I'm going to join the fray, Arion. I suppose there's little choice now... You're in charge of defending the castle.
    Arion: Understood, Father.
Travant: I'll entrust this spear to you... and with it, the future of Thracia.
Arion: Hold on a moment, Father... This is Gungnir! What is the meaning of this? How do you intend to fight without it? Unless... Father, you can't be-
Travant: I am. Frankly, Arion, I've had enough. Thracia is yours to do with as you see fit. But we don't need to be hated by their kind...
Arion: Are you seriously suggesting I should seek a truce, Father? No! Never! To comply with the rebels now would be unthinkable!
Travant: As I said, Thracia is yours. Do as you see fit. All I ask is for you to find a way to liberate Thracia's people from their suffering... Farewell, Arion.
" — Travant andArion,Fire Emblem: Genealogy of the Holy War
  5. "Chagall: Travant! I trust your wyvern rider unit is ready?
Travant: You can rest assured, Chagall. We'll deliver on your expectations.
Chagall: Hmph. I suppose even these common sellswords ought to do a better job for me than all of my worthless servants...
" —Chagall and Travant,Fire Emblem: Genealogy of the Holy War
  6. "Ugh... Papilio failed, did he? That does it. It's time to withdraw. I refuse to fall with this flaming wreck of a country. Heh, farewell, King Chagall... You fool." — Travant,Fire Emblem: Genealogy of the Holy War
  7. "Thracia's fate depends on a unified peninsula. The verdant northern soils are the perfect cure for the famine and poverty wracking our south. We've been shunned and vilified for centuries, dismissed as ravenous hyenas... Yet what choice did we ever have? If not for our answer to this world's craving for sellswords, Thracia would never have had the funds to barely survive as we do." — Travant,Fire Emblem: Genealogy of the Holy War
  8. "My fondest wish is to return this land to what it was in the days of Dáinn and Njörun. ...Even if it damns me to the deepest pit of Hell." — Travant,Fire Emblem: Thracia 776
  9. "The Thracian army is as loyal to Travant as they come. They ardently believe it's Travant who'll guide Thracia out of its endless famine." —Lewyn,Fire Emblem: Genealogy of the Holy War
