Skill(s)

TheThief (Japanese:盗賊Thief) is abasicclass which was introduced inFire Emblem: Shadow Dragon & the Blade of Light. Thieves act as a supporting class whose abilities lie primarily in the domain of stealing and obtaining items or gold from the enemy. Thieves are present in every game in theFire Emblem series exceptFire Emblem Gaiden andFire Emblem Echoes: Shadows of Valentia.

Thieves possess exceptionalspeed and goodskill, but can seldom put these to use in combat as they typically have poor to mediocrestrength and are rendered extremely frail by their low defensive stats. In emergencies they can wieldswords, orknives inPath of Radiance andRadiant Dawn, to defend themselves, but their primary role is avoiding combat entirely to focus on their supporting roles: stealing from enemy units and unlocking doors, treasure chests and bridges. Their ability to unlock chests and doors depends on the game: some games require they use alockpick item, others that they possessa skill, and some instead have it as an innate ability.

InFates, Thieves are known asOutlaws in the localization, specialize inbows instead of swords or knives, and have unusually high magicalresistance for a primarily physical-based class. Being locked tobows makes their lowdefense less of a concern than for the Thief, if the Outlaw initiates battle, but leaves them more vulnerable if they are attacked at close range.

Fire Emblem Engage removes most of the utility functions of the class and redefines them as speedy and evasive combat units. Chests inEngage are not locked, and any unit can open them. Thieves can still uniquely open closed doors, but all doors can also be opened by attacking them to deplete their health. In exchange, thieves now have stats that are on par with classes likeSwordmaster, and they are one of few classes to wield thepoison-inflictingdaggers.

The Thief'sclass change options have varied considerably throughout the series. InShadow Dragon & the Blade of Light,Mystery of the Emblem,The Binding Blade,Shadow Dragon,New Mystery of the Emblem, andEngage, Thieves cannot class change at all; to compensate, the latter three games designate it as aspecial class with the ability to reach a maximumlevel of either 30 in the DS remakes or 40 inEngage.Genealogy of the Holy War andThracia 776 were the first games to give the Thief a promoted class, theThief Fighter. The majority of games since then fromThe Blazing Blade onward have Thieves promote toAssassins. The Sacred Stones gives them the alternative option of promoting to theRogue class, which also acts their only hypothetical promoted class inRadiant Dawn.Awakening introduced another class change option for Thieves as an alternative to Assassins: theTrickster. InFates, Outlaws promote toBow Knight andAdventurer.
