Main articles:The Peddler Merlinus/Script (Eliwood) andThe Peddler Merlinus/Script (Hector)

Hector andEliwood are preparing to camp outside aCaelin village for the night. Eliwood entertains the thought of visiting Castle Caelin to check onLyn, but in the midst of his pondering, the two lords hear a scream. They follow the scream to its source and finda merchant being harassed by a group of bandits. Eliwood and Hector attempt to intervene, but the bandits' leaderPuzon does not back down, thus beginning a battle.

The bandits eventually tire of fighting and flee the battlefield. The merchant introduces himself as Merlinus, thanks the two lords for coming to his aid, and attempts to give them a token of his thanks. Hector rejects Merlinus's token and, instead, asks him if he would like to accompany him on his and Eliwood's journey to manage their merchandise. Merlinus gladly accepts Hector's offer.

Strategy

Augury
This chapter has no augury.Hannah will offer her services beginning inChapter 14.
This section details unofficial strategies that may help with completion of the chapter. This may not work for everybody.

This is your first defend chapter in the main story and second one overall. Therefore, this chapter is easier than the ones before it, and you will not have to worry about racking up too high of a turn count for your ending statistic.Merlinus is only a neutralCivilian until the next chapter, and if he dies this chapter is considered lost. A unit with high speed or constitution likeMarcus can rescue him, or a lord you intend to keep out of battle. In many cases, he can be left alone as long as there are enough people to distract potential threats.

Your group is more than capable of simply waiting out the seven turns. Keeping them on or near your holm base means you can use chokepoints to let your stronger units wall off potential threats and force most of the stronger enemies to the back of the line. However, playing the game this conservatively will set you back in the long run: the village in the top-right corner gives you 5,000 gold, and many units will be deprived of potential experience.

Moving out and about pays off in the end, but now you should be sure to take precautions. The vast majority of enemies will spawn on the upper and upper-left sections of the map, and most of your focus should be there. In particular, take out the Archer on the top-left. They are free for anyone with a melee attack and also have the highest chance of attacking Merlinus during enemy phase. You're better off letting the snag on the left be taken down by enemies. It will waste one of their turns and you need some time to handle the enemies close by you anyway.

Have Marcus orLowen assigned to get the village's money. You will need it for the shop in the next chapter and, if you're playing Hector mode, to recruitFarina. Many other units can reach the village without fear of death, but they will take too long to return to help the others. Someone with good defense likeOswin can handle the units that spawn to the left. Sword users like Guy and Eliwood are the best fits to take out the slew of Brigands on the bottom-right, but Dorcas and Bartre are also worthy fits. Nomads will spawn as reinforcements, so try to make your way over to the forts as quickly as you can with them. Meanwhile, everyone should inch slowly from the starting point as to not take any chances. The Nomads are more of a threat to Merlinus than to you, so you only need to worry about them on enemy phase or if you're backed into a corner.

Puzon is stronger and faster than his mob, but the real danger lies in how he surrounds himself with so much backup. Fortunately, Puzon is lacking in defense and your main lord has a chance of oneshotting him. In addition to the high amount of experience he gives, the reinforcements will entirely stop. The fog of war combined with reinforcements can make the amount of enemies seem almost endless and block your path to the boss. That's why you should always haveMatthew use a torch to expand his already high fog vision. Both the left and upper paths to the boss can be taken, and which one you use depends on whichever opens up first. Unlike many bosses in this game, he will move to attack you if you're in his range. However, he does not have a ranged weapon.
