Strategy

This section details unofficial strategies that may help with completion of the chapter. This may not work for everybody.

Horse units and armor knights have terrible movement in the desert sand, so it isn't advised to bring any unless they're your only trained combat units. Conversely, fliers and mages will not be slowed by the sand, giving them comparably more movement than your other units, making them more useful. Be sure to bring Lethe and/or Mordecai to recruit Stefan, who's hidden in the upper-right of the map.

Finishing the chapter within 7 turns while only defeating Muarim will net you the most bonus XP, but this is incredibly difficult to do, especially while also picking up the various hidden items in the desert and recruiting Stefan. Focusing on those additional goals is generally better than worrying about the bonus XP in this chapter, so don't be afraid to fight the enemy laguz, using laguz-effective weapons to make it easier. Each unit that takes an action to end their turn within a hidden item's area has a random chance to find that item, unless that unit is a thief, in which case they will always find the item. As such, bringing Volke or Sothe for their utility is a good idea.

Muarim will not retaliate against ranged units, allowing such units to attack him freely. As a beast laguz with low resistance, Muarim is quite vulnerable to fire magic, so having Soren or Ilyana attack Muarim at range with a fire tome is usually the easiest way to defeat him. If neither has been trained, any strong melee unit with a laguz-effective weapon should handle him relatively easily.
