Plot

Leif and his forces prepare to depart forUlster and helpDryas's forces. However, their preparations are interrupted by a messenger from Dryas's vanguard that informs Leif their forces were counterattacked by the Empire. With his soldiers forced to retreat, Dryas struck the enemy's flank to give his forces more time to fall back, and was killed in the process. Leif is in disbelief, butAugust snaps him out of it, then orders him to ride out and save as many of Dryas's soldiers as he can, as well as the citizens of Ulster who are trying to escape toLeonster.
Leif's forces leave Leonster and start covering the retreating Leonster soldiers and Ulster civilians, who are being attacked by Imperial forces under the command ofWolf,Amalda, andConomor. When everyone who is able escapes, Leif also retreats. On his way back to Leonster, Leif expresses his sorrow over Dryas's death to August, but August tells him that he must atone for his mistake later. August then informs Leif that a rebellion led bySeliph broke out inIsaach, with PrinceShannan of Isaach in its ranks, among others. August says that Seliph was willed into a hero by the people around him, and likens it to Leif's situation, as many people – including Dryas – have fought for him and sacrificed themselves for him.
