Sylvain Jose Gautier (pronounced /sɪl'veɪn hoʊ'zeɪ 'ɡɑtieɪ/[key]; Japanese:シルヴァン=ジョゼ=ゴーティエSylvain José Gautier) is aCrest-bearing scion of HouseGautier, second son of its then-margraveMatthias Raoul Gautier, younger brother ofMiklan, and a good friend of fellow noblesDimitri,Felix, andIngrid. In1180, he enrolled in theOfficers Academy atGarreg Mach Monastery and joined theBlue Lions house alongside his friends.
Sylvain is a playable character inFire Emblem: Three Houses. Additionally, he is also a playable character in the spinoff titlesFire Emblem Heroes andWarriors: Three Hopes.
Biography
Sylvain is the second son of the house of Gautier. During his childhood, he was abused by his elder brotherMiklan, who deeply resented him due to his Crest making him the favored child.[4] Eventually, Miklan was disowned and left House Gautier.[5] In 1180, he enrolled in the Officers Academy atGarreg Mach Monastery and joined theBlue Lions, studying and fighting alongside them. During this time, Miklan steals theLance of Ruin from House Gautier and is tracked down and slain by Church forces, potentially including Sylvain himself.
After the timeskip, if Sylvain is a member ofByleth's class, he returns to Garreg Mach on the day of the millennium festival and accompanies them throughout the war. If not recruited on the Verdant Wind route, he reunites withDimitri and fights alongside him in the Battle at Gronder, and can be circumvented or slain at the player's discretion. If not recruited on the Crimson Flower route, he fights alongside Dimitri at the Tailtean Plains, and is slain by Imperial forces. Sylvain makes no appearances in the story on the Silver Snow route, but it is most likely he's one of the many casualties of the Battle at Gronder.
Fire Emblem: Three Houses

Analysis
| This character analysis section may not be accurate to every player's experience. |
Sylvain is a physically-oriented unit with great offenses and good physical bulk. His base stats are solid, lacking any clear weakness; withTempest Lance at base, he can deal major damage as soon as he becomes available. On top of his solid bases, Sylvain possesses good to great growths inHP,Strength,Speed,Defense andCharm, meaning he will end up with respectable physical bulk on par withDimitri; that bulk will allow him to survive double attacks from the fastest enemies on Maddening. Sylvain's personal skill ofPhilanderer boosts his damage by 2 and reduces any damages he takes by 2 when adjacent to a female unit; the added defensive buffer allows him to take physical hits for other units early on. Upon achieving an A-rank inlances, Sylvain will obtain one of the bestcombat arts in the game:Swift Strikes. This is one of the few combat arts with aBrave effect, meaning it will strike twice in one attack, and Sylvain is one of three units able to obtain this art alongsideFerdinand andSeteth. With the right lance, this combat art allows Sylvain to one-round nearly any enemy. Swift Strikes even retains the effective damage bonus of theHorseslayer andBlessed Lance, allowing Sylvain to tear through nearly any enemy horseback unit ormonster.
Sylvain possesses a MinorCrest of Gautier, which grants him a 40% chance to raise his equipped weapon'sMight by 5 when using a combat art. In spite of its unreliable activation rate, as is common with Crest effects, it synergizes beautifully with Swift Strikes. Since the combat art strikes twice consecutively, the Crest of Gautier has an effective 64% chance of activating on at least either hit, meaning the effect will activate when using Swift Strikes more often than not, further bolstering Sylvain's impressive ability to consistently one-round enemies. Furthermore, Sylvain's Crest allows him to useRuined Sky, theLance of Ruin's exclusive combat art. Ruined Sky grants a huge +13 Might and deals effective damage todragons and flying units; however, that pales in comparison to using Swift Strikes with theRelic lance, which instead grants an effective +24 to Might provided the second hit lands. Since both arts consume the same amount ofdurability, Swift Strikes is consistently superior when using the Lance of Ruin.
Sylvain has a Budding Talent inReason, which will give himBlack Magic Avo +20 once realized; it increases his Avoid while equipped with black magic. To be able to make use of this ability to strengthen his dodge-tanking, he needs to be in a magic-enabled class. The Budding Talent mostly serves as a nice bonus on the way to raising Sylvain's Reason prowess for magically-inclined promotions, particularlyDark Knight, where he may prove to be a powerful hybrid attacker with healing utility.
Several of Sylvain's ideal promotion pathways revolve around capitalizing on the amazing damage output of Swift Strikes, potentially supplementing it with other tools. The fastest way to Swift Strikes involves promoting Sylvain into aSoldier andCavalier, thenPaladin. Since Paladin hasLancefaire and the highest Strength class modifier andmovement out of all horse-mounted classes, it is one of Sylvain's more optimal final classes. When following the above promotion path, make sure to teach SylvainDeath Blow by masteringBrigand, as the skill translates to as much as 12 more damage when using Swift Strikes. Should the player seek to make Sylvain more tanky,Great Knight may be worth considering; it loses 1 Strength and 4 Speed compared to Paladin, but keeps Lancefaire, addsAxefaire and provides greater modifiers in HP and Defense. Sylvain can also follow the promotion pathway ofFighter to Brigand for Death Blow, thenWyvern Rider, ending inWyvern Lord. Wyvern Lord is the best physically-oriented class in the game, as it has the best Strength and Speed modifiers coupled withCanto and the peerless mobility of flying units. While Paladin comes with Lancefaire, Wyvern Lord's significantly higher Speed means Sylvain will be far less prone to being doubled, rendering it much safer; the main point against Wyvern Lord is its significantly reduced access to battalions. There's also nothing stopping him from certifying for both classes and switching between the two as dictated by map layout; for example, the penultimate map of Azure Moon is in a city with many buildings that Wyvern Lord can fly over, while the final map is an indoor map in a castle where flight matters less.
Beyond his purely physical options, Sylvain's spell list includes enough options to justify a magical or, more notably, a hybrid promotion path. This includes masteringMage forFiendish Blow while optionallyalso mastering the aforementioned Brigand for Death Blow, bolstering both of his offenses on Player Phase. Promoting Sylvain to aDark Knight will grant him an alternative option in magic at the cost of making him lose a point of movement and decreasing his damage output with lances by 6, but the combination of Fiendish Blow andBlack Tomefaire grants him 11 points of additional damage when using any black magic spell on Player Phase. Sylvain's Reason spell list, while sedate, is perfectly serviceable. His Faith spells, however, include the ever-usefulPhysic as well asSeraphim; the former grants him utility at any point on the map, bolstered by Dark Knight's 7 movement, while the latter allows him to smite magically vulnerable monsters with impunity together with Fiendish Blow. If using Death Blow, Sylvain will still be dealing tremendous damage with Swift Strikes. While more unorthodox, Dark Knight grants Sylvain additional options and ever-handy Physic utility, meaning he will always be capable of contributing.
Out-of-house Performance
Sylvain holds the unique distinction of being the easiest unit to recruit outside of theBlue Lions. When using femaleByleth, Sylvain can be recruited during the first exploration session inChapter 2. Since he essentially has no recruitment cost for female Byleth, Sylvain can be considered one of your starting units in any route and be trained accordingly. Sylvain's personal skill also has great synergy withHilda andLeonie's personal skills, Hilda's granting Sylvain +5 damage output in conjunction with his own personal skill and Leonie's allowing the two to boost each other. An additional perk of recruiting Sylvain early is that it allows you to keep the Lance of Ruin by refusing to return it toRhea afterChapter 5. That provides you with a 22-Might weapon to bring to yournext encounter with theDeath Knight, where it can be used to reliably one-shot him when used withKnightkneeler, and to Gronder Field without playing Sylvain'sParalogue, which unlocks at the beginning ofChapter 7.
On the other hand, for male Byleth, Sylvain's standards for out-of-house recruitment are far more stringent, demanding a high level of charm and proficiency in Reason, a proficiency only helpful for Byleth if you plan to keep him in theEnlightened One class, if you are playingBlack Eagles and also seek to recruitLorenz, or if you are aGolden Deer seeking to recruitLinhardt. These conditions leave Sylvain more difficult to recruit before the main map of Chapter 5, potentially making you miss out on a great advantage to recruiting him. Moreover, the other routes have easier access to a Swift Strikes-user—theBlack Eagles haveFerdinand while theGolden Deer automatically recruitSeteth for free at the end of Part I—which means Sylvain is far from necessary to recruit.

Personality
Sylvain acts as an older brother-like figure to the other students, but his fondness for sweet-talking girls causes him trouble. While he enjoys the company of women, he also despises how so many of them are only interested in him because of his Crest. His flirtatious ways belie his shrewd, perceptive mind, and he's a lot better at reading people than he lets on. He jokes around more frequently than most other Officers Academy students.
As he is childhood friends with Felix, Ingrid and Dimitri, he shares a deep bond with them and expresses his unhappiness if forced to fight them. Despite his flirty and easygoing nature, he struggles to develop any deep romantic relationships, and he can only truly commit to love with women he really trusts, with the only ones being Dorothea, Ingrid, Mercedes, and Byleth.
Despite the impression he gives off to people he's actually quite intelligent, being shown to easily grasp complicated magic formulas at a glance in his supports with Annette. In his supports with Dedue, Sylvain explains his suspicions behind the Tragedy of Duscur, as Duscur and Faerghus had enjoyed good relations up until that point and the fact that the king's elite guard was effortlessly slaughtered, a feat not plausible for a smaller, less skilled military.[6] Sylvain explains that he intentionally leads people to think he is not very smart because he dislikes the pressure of people's expectations and them believing they know what he is capable of, saying he finds it suffocating.
Sylvain hates the way crests influence the lives of those in Fódlan, as his brother Miklan was born without one. He held deep resentment against Sylvain for having one, even throwing him down a well at one point, or leaving him on the side of a mountain in the middle of winter. Despite all of this, Sylvain doesn't hold resentment towards his brother and expresses that he could have ended up just like him if Miklan was born with a crest instead of Sylvain. Furthermore, he holds most women in contempt, as he believes they show interest in him solely due to his Crest in an attempt to curry favor with him, without actually getting to know who he is. However, in conversations with Byleth, Sylvain admits that hating women is merely an "easy answer" and seems to recognize that he cannot blame them for all his problems.
After the war ends, Sylvain is stated to have convinced the nobles of his territory to place less value on the Crests by easing tensions with Sreng, thereby nullifying their necessity. He's also stated to have treated all of his children equally no matter if they had a Crest or not, and in some endings, his heir does not bear a Crest.[7]

Endings
Sylvain, Sincerest of Knights (single ending)
As Margrave Gautier, Sylvain devoted his life to improving relations with the people of the Sreng region. With oration alone, he succeeded in helping to create a new way of life for nobles in which Relics and Crests were no longer viewed as necessary. Though he went down in history as an extraordinary lord, it nevertheless became customary to refer to cheaters as "sons of Gautier."
Byleth, Wandering Flame/Ruler of Dawn & Sylvain, Sincerest of Knights (Silver Snow, Verdant Wind)
After ascending the throne as the first leader of the United Kingdom of Fódlan, Byleth announced her marriage to Sylvain, who had become the new Margrave Gautier. Sylvain was a valued ally who assisted his wife in her new role, both publicly and privately. Most of all, it is said that his cunning manner of speech was a great asset for fostering relations between the Church of Seiros, Fódlan, and surrounding regions. Though known as a philanderer in youth, Sylvain happily settled down after marriage and became a gentle and devoted husband and father. The two had many children whom they doted on equally, regardless of whether or not they bore a crest.

After becoming the new archbishop of the Church of Seiros, Byleth announced her marriage to Sylvain, heir to House Gautier. Sylvain was a valued ally who assisted his wife in her new role, both publicly and privately. He achieved a great deal, including fostering relations with Faerghus and helping to institute sweeping organizational changes within the church. Though known as a philanderer in his youth, Sylvain happily settled down after marriage. By the time he inherited the title of Margrave Gautier, he was a gentle and devoted husband. It is said that those who knew him in his youth wondered what sort of spell the archbishop had cast on him.
Byleth, Wings of the Hegemon & Sylvain, Sincerest of Knights (Crimson Flower)
When the fighting was over, Byleth and Sylvain were married. As the new leaders of House Gautier, they focused their efforts on the restoration of northern Fódlan, which had been deeply scarred by the ravages of war. Once this task was complete, they set their sights on improving relations with the Sreng people in an effort to remove the perceived need for the power of Crests. This accomplishment took a great deal of hard work, but the two refused to give up on their ideals. In time, the two had a large and loving family. They lived happily and loved their children equally, regardless of whether or not they bore a Crest.
Dorothea, Devoted Heart & Sylvain, Sincerest of Knights
After more than 10 proposals, Dorothea finally relented and agreed to marry Sylvain. Together they inherited Gautier territory. With the support of his wife's counsel, the new Margrave Gautier was able to improve relations with the Sreng people, and thereby convince the local nobles that Relics and Crests were no longer an absolute requirement for survival. Due to their efforts, they went down in history as an extraordinary lord and lady. It is said that what finally convinced Dorothea to marry Sylvain was his promise that they would grow old happily together, and that he was true to his word.
Felix, Meandering Sword & Sylvain, Sincerest of Knights (Silver Snow, Verdant Wind, Crimson Flower)
Even after the war's end, skirmishes continued to break out across Fódlan. Learning that there were still places where he could fight, Felix abandoned his noble title and chose to make a living with his sword. Decades later, he reunited briefly with Sylvain, who had need of his services as Margrave Gautier. Felix departed as soon as the job was finished, however, and the two never met again. Years later, a sword that was thought to have belonged to Felix arrived on Sylvain's doorstep.
Felix, The Shield's Successor & Sylvain, Sincerest of Knights (Azure Moon)
After the war, Felix and Sylvain inherited their respective titles of Duke Fraldarius and Margrave Gautier, and set to work restoring the Kingdom. Each led a busy life, but that only seemed to enhance their friendship over the years. Each became known for making surprise visits to the estate of the other, in order to deliver the latest taunting in a friendly but relentless game of one-upmanship. It is said that, in their later years, they became so close that they passed away on the same day, as if conceding that one could not live without the other.
Sylvain, Sincerest of Knights & Mercedes, Benevolent Soul
As Margrave Gautier, Sylvain devoted his life to improving relations with the people of Sreng. Under his leadership, nobles were persuaded that Relics and Crests were not necessary as they'd previously thought. Though he went down in history as an extraordinary lord, he could not have done so without the constant support and counsel of his wife, Mercedes, whose wisdom and guidance brought prosperity to the people. The couple built a loving home life, surrounded by happy children, and when Sylvain at last passed away, he was succeeded by his oldest child, who bore no Crest.
Sylvain, Sincerest of Knights & Ingrid, Stalwart Knight
As Margrave Gautier, Sylvain devoted his life to improving relations with the people of Sreng. Under his leadership, nobles were persuaded that Relics and Crests were not necessary as they'd previously thought. Though he went down in history as an extraordinary lord, he could not have done so without the constant support and counsel of his wife, Ingrid, whose wisdom and tenacity ensured that the people would prosper. Sylvain was ever loyal to his beloved wife. The couple had many children, and while not one of them bore a Crest, they were all equally and wholeheartedly loved.
Sylvain (if Sylvain was defeated in Part I in Classic Mode)
Fell in combat with another army after the battle of Garreg Mach. He was unable to make the promised meeting.

Gautier is a variant of Gauthier, and is a French surname equivalent to "Walter" in German and English. |
