Analysis
| This character analysis section may not be accurate to every player's experience. |
Subaki is a level 5Sky Knight joining at the start ofChapter 7 ofBirthright, and at the end ofChapter 8 inRevelation. As a Sky Knight, Subaki's growth rates are completely mismatched. His HP, speed, defense, and resistance growths are not what you normally see on mostPegasus units. His other growths are more like Pegasus units. Even when promoting, his growths in his most critical stats (strength, speed, defense, and resistance) are all below 50%.
When Subaki is recruited, he comes with the same stats in each campaign. His HP and defense bases provide workable bulk with weapon bonuses; his base speed and resistance are high, but unlikely to grow further; and his strength is too low to deal meaningful damage at base. Coupled with his low strength growth, this will be a problem throughout the game. His only outright positive is his flying ability. In Chapter 9 ofRevelation, Subaki's flight allows him to rescue units blown away by the wind, and he is the only unit at this time to provide this benefit without havingCorrin's talent set to a flying class, and they use the earlyHeart Seal from buying theRod Shop orStaff Store. However, flying utility is less beneficial in the chapters between then and when the next flying units—Reina inChapter 11 andCamilla inChapter 12—can be recruited.
Subaki's starts with his personal skillPerfectionist, and Sky Knight's starting skill ofDarting Blow. Perfectionist is of little benefit to him; his luck is low enough where theavoid boost is insufficient to reliably dodge most attacks, and his hit rates are already high to the point where the hit bonus is a bit redundant. Darting Blow is immensely useful as it lets him continue to double for a bit longer, though only when he initiates combat. At level 10, he getsCamaraderie for healing 10% of his HP when he is within two spaces of an ally. When paired up, Sky Knight provides +3 speed, +3 resistance, and +1 movement; combined with Subaki's innate pair-up bonuses, this makes him a good pair up partner for low-speed, medium-defense characters. However, Reina,Hinoka, andScarlet all provide better bonuses in the same areas.
Subaki has two promotion choices at base, beingFalcon Knight andKinshi Knight. Falcon Knight overall gives better promotion bonuses, being +1 HP, strength, and defense, as well as +2 speed and resistance, though the +3 magic isn't super impactful since Subaki will almost never be good in magic without heavy investment. Kinshi's +3 skill isn't needed since he already has a high skill stat at base. Kinshi also makes his growths worse by reducing his strength, luck, and resistance growths, while only increasing his already high skill growth. However, gaining bows is a useful boon inBirthright where good ranged lances are in short supply, since Subaki's low magic makes theBolt Naginata difficult to use, andSilas'sJavelin will be a heavily contested weapon among many other units. Bows also have high might inFates, which can fix some of his strength issues without extra classes from marriages or friendships. On the topic of skills, Falcon Knight gainsRally Speed andWarding Blow. Rally Speed gives Subaki non-fighting utility, and Warding Blow completely fixes Subaki's resistance issues with player phase combat with its +20 to his resistance stat. Kinshi instead givesAir Superiority for extra hit and avoid against flying units, where Kinshi's bow access turns this into a deadly combo, andAmaterasu lets Subaki heal 20% of allies' HP at the start of player phase.
For his base reclass, Subaki can use theSamurai class tree, which slightly improves some of his lacking stats such as HP, speed, and defense, though the +1 strength in conjunction with using theBrass Katana will actually comes out as slightly less damage than if he was using theIron Naginata as a Sky Knight. He'll also lose one of his biggest early game assets of ferrying other units. Because of this,Duelist's Blow andVantage are best gotten later, preferably after he has promoted, since other units want to use earlyHeart Seals more than he does. As aSwordmaster, he has the highest possible speed base out of his base classes, while also have decently balanced stats all around.Astra gives Subaki the ability to strike five times at half damage, where if all attacks hit, he does more damage than two full damage attacks. His high skill base and growth, as well as a slightly accelerated growth as a Swordmaster, makes this a somewhat consistent skill.Swordfaire boosts sword damage, though he arguably does better in his flying classes due to ferrying utility alone, and neither of them can use swords.Master of Arms gives the highest physical bulk and strength out of his classes at the cost of having the lowest luck base, as well as the lowest resistance base. However, he'll have access to swords, lances, and axes to be able to completely manipulate the weapon triangle. Since Subaki has a decent likelihood of not being able to double, or be at a good strength threshold to deal fatal damage to full health enemies,Seal Strength can be a useful skill to reduce incoming damage to other units.Life and Death is another powerful skill by giving +10 damage to all of Subaki's attacks, though the enemy also gains extra damage to their attacks, and with Subaki's generally low bulk, keep that in mind.
Subaki also has threeFriendship Seal options for gaining additional classes.Saizo provides +5 speed as aMaster Ninja, or +2 strength, +1 speed, and +2 resistance as a Mechanist.Ninja is a serviceable class for Subaki, as shurikens provide consistent 1-2 range combat, which is a useful commodity inBirthright. His lower strength also makesPoison Strike consistently useful, as well as having shuriken debuffs take place since he can struggle to kill who he is trying to debuff. Subaki also has a higher skill base than Kinshi Knight, as well as having other decent stats, but he'll have a lower luck base and growth than Master of Arms. WhileLethality may seem good on paper since it allows Subaki to instantly kill non-boss enemies, even with his high skill base and growth, he'll still have a very low proc rate. As a capped skill Master Ninja, it'll still be below 10%. Mechanist gives the worst speed base than all his other classes, as well as having Master Ninja's luck issues, but he'll be more mobile to be able to take advantage of shuriken debuffs more often, as well as having higher damaging bows compared to Master Ninja's swords if he needs to deal more raw damage.Replicate allows Subaki to create a clone, which can double his firepower every turn, though since both he and the clone share the same health bar, it will require some extra care to make sure he doesn't die.Azama gives +1 strength, +1 speed, and +3 resistance as aGreat Master when paired up. TheMonk class tree is an interesting option, but Subaki won't be able to use it to the fullest with his low magic growth and base, even when reclassing.Miracle is very unreliable with his low base and growth, and whileRally Luck can be good in certain situations, it's generally considered the worst of the rally skills. The promotion ofGreat Master is very helpful, as it increases his physical bulk and strength more than the other classes, and lets him keep his pre-built lance rank. Subaki's generally mid bulk makesRenewal pretty useful.Countermagic can make Subaki deal massive amounts of magical damage back to a foe if he is being attacked on enemy phase, though the player will need to make sure he doesn't die with his low resistance growth, and middling base.Onmyoji is significantly worse than any of his other classes, as his magic base will not be high enough to deal consistently high damage, it has the worst bulk out his available classes, and has luck issues with a reduced base, and low growth reclassing. With these problems,Rally Magic may prove difficult to get, andTomefaire isn't worth it since other units are much more proficient in magic and will be the player's dedicated frontline magic attackers. When playingRevelation,Niles is an exclusive to this route, and givesOutlaw. This is another class with luck issues, though it has several useful skills that the player may want, such asMovement +1 to cover more distance. As anAdventurer, he'll have a better magic base than Falcon Knight, and be fine statwise except for his lowered luck.Lucky 7 is decent for extra hit and avoid during the first seven turns of a map, but his high skill base and growth may mitigate the need for this skill.Pass does let him move past enemy occupied squares, but he can already do that in his flying classes. Subaki also gains another decent mounted class inBow Knight, as well asRally Skill to support other units.Shurikenbreaker is another powerful skill, though it's not as needed sinceBirthright andRevelation don't have super threateningInevitable End shuriken users likeConquest. He can also stack faire skills well in this class by obtaining his base Swordfaire, and obtainingBowfaire from theArcher class he'll gain when marryingMozu orSetsuna.
Corrin is special in the fact that she can pass any class to Subaki through marriage withPartner Seals. One such class that is very useful to Subaki isKnight. Knight and the promotion ofGeneral boost his HP, strength, and defense growths, as well as solving his strength and defense stats. When it comes to skills, he can mitigate his low speed by usingWary Fighter. His bulk can also be fixed more, especially when not in this class, by usingDefense +2,Natural Cover,Pavise, andArmored Blow from the other promotion ofGreat Knight. Corrin is also fine with this being her talent class since Great Knight allows her to use theYato if the player wishes.
