Stahl (Japanese:ソールSort) is a character inFire Emblem Awakening. He is a cavalier, and, along withSully, make the standard red-green cavalier duo. He has a kind and gentle personality and is a member ofChrom's vigilante forces,The Shepherds.

Stahl first appears in thesecond chapter of the game, arriving to the group late becauseVaike did not notify him, and Stahl ended up missing breakfast in order to arrive as quick as he could. He becomes a deployable unit once the battle begins.

Analysis

Stahl is a level 2Cavalier starting in Chapter 2 ofAwakening. His stats are not super important as they are mostly on par with the enemies stats, and combined with his great growths in all areas except magic and resistance, he will grow to be a competent combat unit. However, he starts with only an E in both lances and swords, but with some extra sword experience, and starts with aBronze Sword in his inventory. He also has Cavalier's starting skill ofDiscipline, giving him some extra weapon experience to build weapon ranks faster. At level 10, he will getOutdoor Fighter, giving him some extra hit and avoid when in outdoor maps.

Since Cavalier and its promotions are some of the best in the game, Stahl greatly appreciates being in both of the promotions for their useful skills, and potentially as a final class. The first one ofPaladin gives more points of magic, skill, speed, resistance, and movement. His growths are not impacted aside from a slight boost to resistance. As for the skills,Defender slightly boosts all stats when paired up, andAegis has a chance to reduce damage from bows, tomes, and dragonstones. The other promotion ofGreat Knight gives more points of HP, strength, and defense, while also gaining access to axes, giving him full weapon triangle control. He also gets higher HP, strength, and defense growths, but also has reductions to his skill and speed growths. The first skill,Luna, gives a decent chance to halve the enemies defense/resistance for one strike during combat. The second skill,Dual Guard+, gives a higher chance to activate a duel guard.

For the first reclass option of theArcher classline, the Archer class itself is not super great to reclass to with the skills not being very great, while the promoted classes have skills worth the reclass.Skill +2 will be rendered obsolete very fast, andPrescience can be good if applied right, but will usually end up being replaced. Archer is further worse with the only increased growth being skill, and both the strength and speed growths are decreased. If the player promotes from Archer, the two choices are eitherSniper orBow Knight. Sniper gives more points of magic, skill, defense, and resistance, with the only growth impacted being a slight boost to defense. While Sniper is generally a worse class than Bow Knight in most situations, it provides some excellent skills.Hit Rate +20 gives a high, permanent boost to hit rates, andBowfaire gives an extra five might with bows, but this skill can only be used when Stahl is a Sniper, Bow Knight, or Assassin. The other promotion of Bow Knight has better long-term viablility with its eight movement. Aside from that, Bow Knight gives more HP, strength, speed, and access to swords for a one-range option. Bow Knight additionally increases his HP and skill growths, and only reduces his defense growth. Bow Knight also has great skills.Rally Skill is a great supportive skill to help out units to try to get guaranteed hits, andBowbreaker is an absolutely broken skill, giving a massive fifty extra hit and avoid against bows.

The last reclass tree ofMyrmidon also has reasons to be used. While Myrmidon does haveAvoid +10 as a mediocre starting skill that will easily be replaced, the other skill ofVantage will have many more use cases, and can easily find a spot on his skill set if it is used right. Myrmidon also reduces his HP and defense growths, but also increases his skill and speed growths. The promotions ofSwordmaster andAssassin have skills that are not the greatest, but could be worth the reclass if applied well. Starting at promotion bonuses, Swordmaster gives more points of magic, speed, defense, and resistance, with the only growth being modified is a slight boost to resistance. As for the skills,Astra gives a chance to attack five times at half damage, which has the potential to do more damage than two attacks at full damage, andSwordfaire gives a five attack boost when Stahl uses swords. For the other option, Assassin gives more points of HP, strength, skill, and access to bows for a better ranged option than theLevin Sword, which is worthless in his hands with his almost nonexistant magic, and Assassin even takes away a point of magic. The only growth modified for Assassin is just a slight boost to skill from Myrmidon instead of resistance like Swordmaster. For the skills,Lethality is mostly unreliable to be used well, butPass has amazing utility, with the best uses being paired with the high movement of Paladin, Great Knight, or Bow Knight.

If Stahl is married, he passes good growth increases to HP, strength, and defense. There are a decent of wives he can marry without depriving the child of the covetedGaleforce skill.Lissa,Panne,Cordelia, andCherche all have physically oriented children that would greatly appreciate inheriting the other great skill of Luna, whether it be from getting to a level 5 Great Knight or as an inherited skill.Miriel andMaribelle would probably want magical husbands, but they can marry physical ones if the player wants to try to haveLaurent orBrady to be a magical physical hybrid, making them either aDark Knight orWar Monk.

Personality

Calm and collected, Stahl is a character with a big heart and a big appetite. He has a great love for food, which tends to be the only thing he can think about at times. He also tends to oversleep and gets tired easily. However, Stahl is incredibly helpful, to the point where people end up taking advantage of his kindness, even his brother. Though Stahl does not mind this; he enjoys helping others even with the smallest of tasks. Stahl also tends to joke with his comrades, even calling Chrom an "old man" in his support conversation withRobin. The most eager to clean a plate.

Stahl: Viridian Knight
Stahl is a member of the Shepherds, the group led by Chrom! He fights alongside Chrom and his friends to serve the peace in Ylisse as he works toward his dream of one day becoming a knight.	Stahl has a mild, gentle personality, but he fights bravely when duty calls. With his messy bedhead and scatterbrained personality, you'd hardly believe the man you see on the battlefield is really Stahl!	Stahl's family runs an apothecary, and he always carries medicines with him. I hear he even gifted Chrom with a special homemade tonic for his birthday!	He's a good friend who's always looking out for others. I'd say that Stahl is an essential part of the Shepherds' colorful lineup of unusual Heroes!
