| “ | Oh, my... What could have brought you here? | ” | — Sothis, meetingByleth for the first time. |
|---|
Sothis (pronounced /'soʊθɪs/[key]; Japanese:ソティスSothis) is a character appearing inFire Emblem: Three Houses. She is a mysterious amnesiac girl whom onlyByleth can see. She is the goddess ofFódlan, and is referred to as the "progenitor god" (Japanese:神祖divine ancestor) and as "the Beginning" (Japanese:はじまりのものPerson of the Beginning).
Biography
Sothis came to Fódlan over a millennium before the events of the main story, where she gave birth to many children and was worshiped by the natives as a goddess. With her aid, ancient humanity developed a technologically great civilization calledAgartha. However, the ancient humans betrayed her and attacked her. Sothis caused a great cataclysm across Fódlan, spent several years restoring the land, and then went into a deep hibernation. During this time, surviving Agarthans approached the banditNemesis and offered him the power of Sothis and her kin. At their direction, Nemesis murdered Sothis, carved her spine and heart into a sword called theSword of the Creator, and used it to genocide theChildren of the Goddess and obtain power for his followers. A survivor of the massacre,Seiros, helped found theAdrestian Empire, raised an army, slew Nemesis in battle, and reclaimed the Sword. Over the next millennium, Seiros became obsessed with using Sothis's heart to create a new body for her and restore her to life, eventually becoming the Archbishop of theChurch of Seiros under the pseudonymRhea. The culmination of these efforts wasByleth, the stillborn child of Rhea's twelfth failed vesselSitri, implanted with Sothis's heart as a baby to save their life. Fearing Rhea's intentions, Byleth's fatherJeralt absconded with the baby, and the two became wandering mercenaries.
Three Houses
Sothis reawakens inside Byleth during an attempt to assassinate future Fódlan leadersEdelgard von Hresvelg,Dimitri Alexandre Blaiddyd, andClaude von Riegan; she has near-complete retrograde amnesia, and can only be heard and seen by Byleth. Sothis takes the role of an advisor to Byleth throughout their year as a teacher at the Officer's Academy. Eventually, Jeralt is assassinated bythose who slither in the dark, the modern remnants of Agartha, and Byleth is sealed inside another dimension in an attempt to get revenge. In order for them to escape, she combines herself with Byleth, granting themenhanced power at the cost of her own individuality. Sothis is not seen again for the rest of the game, but her disembodied voice rouses Byleth from the five-year coma they enter at the onset of the great war between Adrestia,Faerghus, andLeicester.
Warriors: Three Hopes
Sothis forcibly seizes control of Byleth's body after Byleth is overpowered in combat withShez, but Byleth resists the possession, allowing Shez to escape. Later on, if Shez and their companions manage to subdue Byleth and Jeralt without killing them and recruit them to their cause,Arval, the remnant of an ancient Agarthan mage namedEpimenides whose was somehow implanted inside Shez, possesses Shez and attempts to murder Sothis through Byleth. Shez's companions overpower them, and Epimenides draws them into another dimension where he is slain in combat. If Shez and their companions kill Jeralt, Byleth allows Sothis to take full control of their body in order to kill Shez in revenge. Shez and their companions slay Byleth in a final battle, and Sothis dies with them.

Fire Emblem Heroes
- Main article:
Sothis/Heroes
There are three different variations of Sothis available inHeroes. In addition,Rhea: Aura of Love features her as aDuo Hero alongsideRhea, and one variation of Byleth,Byleth: Vengeance Vessel, depicts Byleth as possessed by Sothis.
Personality
Virtually nothing is known about the goddess's personality while she was alive. On the night of the ball, Sothis recognizes the lullaby that she hears Rhea singing as a song that she created, implying that she was a caring mother to her children.[2] The only secondhand accounts of what Sothis was like come from Rhea and the Agarthans, two equally but oppositely biased sources. Rhea held Sothis in such high esteem that she spent the millennium after her death trying in vain to bring her back to life in the belief that she was the only one suited to lead Fódlan.[3] The Agarthans, on the other hand, vowed revenge against her for destroying their civilization and driving them underground.
As a spirit bound to Byleth's consciousness, Sothis has a somewhat petulant demeanor befitting her apparent age, but maintains a dignified manner of speech. At times, she chides Byleth for their more reckless actions,[4] while at other times she teases them good-naturedly.[5] Despite her scolding, she comes to care for Byleth (and by extension their students) to an extent far deeper than her own self-preservation; she comforts Byleth when they mourn Jeralt's death,[6] and does not hesitate to surrender her own free will to grant them the power to escape Solon's spell.[7]
Despite her generally benevolent nature, Sothis demonstrates little mercy to those whom she judges to be wicked. She expresses gratitude towards Byleth for killing all the bandits who took refuge in Zanado, her former home.[8] InWarriors: Three Hopes, should Shez kill Jeralt, Sothis will be even more eager than Byleth to exact revenge, to the point of forcibly controlling Byleth's body against their will to kill one of Shez's companions in retaliation.

Endings
- Sothis's endings are identical to Byleth's solo endings; if unsupported, she has no ending.
Byleth, Wandering Flame & Sothis (Silver Snow)
Byleth defeated those who slither in the dark and put down the crazed Immaculate One. In the aftermath of the loss of Fódlan's great leading figures, <he/she> ascended the throne as the first leader of the United Kingdom of Fódlan. In <his/her> heart lived the indelible hope that their efforts would one day yield an era in which the people knew true peace and the horrors of war were a hazy memory of the past.
Byleth, Guardian of Order & Sothis (Azure Moon)
Byleth helped Dimitri to finally crush the ambitions of the Empire. After the war, Rhea stepped down from her role as archbishop, and Byleth swore to lead the Church of Seiros in her stead. <He/She> helped to guide the Holy Kingdom of Faerghus as it brought leadership to the newly unified Fódlan and worked tirelessly to create a peaceful world free from the shackles of oppression.
Byleth, Ruler of Dawn & Sothis (Verdant Wind)
Together, Byleth and Claude sent the Fell King Nemesis, a foe from a bygone age, back to the flames of eternity from whence he came. Afterward, Claude left Fódlan, leaving Byleth to ascend the throne as the first leader of the United Kingdom of Fódlan. As he took his schemes and dreams and efforts to a far-off land, he hoped dearly that their joint efforts would one day allow for a world where all of humanity can coexist in peace and harmony, regardless of borders or bloodlines.
Byleth, Wings of the Hegemon & Sothis (Crimson Flower)
Byleth fought alongside Edelgard to bring an end to the tyranny of a godlike being. Though <he/she> was wounded in the battle and lost the power of the progenitor god, <he/she> remained determined to walk <his/her> destined path. With <his/her> legendary blade in hand, <he/she> will never stop standing against those who slither in the dark until Fódlan at last knows everlasting peace.
