TheSoldier (Japanese:ソルジャーSoldier) is abasic lance-wielding infantryclass which debuted inFire Emblem Gaiden, and is present in allFire Emblem series games exceptShadow Dragon & the Blade of Light,Genealogy of the Holy War,Fates, andEngage. In the majority of games, Soldiers are anenemy- or NPC-only class, and the class is playable only inGaiden,Path of Radiance,Radiant Dawn,Echoes: Shadows of Valentia, andThree Houses.
When not a playable class, Soldiers are usually characterized as lowly and generic soldiers with no notable abilities, and so enemy Soldiers are typically weak and incompetent compared to other enemy units. They possess lower than average stats in every respect and, while easy to defeat, derive much of their strength from the sheer number of them often deployed. When a playable class, however, Soldiers are competent units on par with their infantry counterpart classes, theMyrmidon andFighter, and tend toward possessing higher defensive stats in exchange forspeed.
InGaiden andShadows of Valentia, the Soldierpromotes to theKnight, which in turn promotes toBaron. InPath of Radiance andRadiant Dawn, the Soldier gains a new promoted form, theHalberdier, which in turn promotes toSentinel inRadiant Dawn.
InFire Emblem: Mystery of the Emblem, Soldiers tended to replace enemy Cavaliers and Paladins in theMystery versions of indoor chapters from the originalFire Emblem: Shadow Dragon & the Blade of Light.
InFire Emblem: Genealogy of the Holy War, the Soldier is an unused class, which also has four variants alongside it, which are also unused:Sword Soldier,Spear Soldier,Axe Soldier, andArcher.
InFire Emblem Fates, theSpear Fighter andLancer classes appear to draw inspiration from Soldiers.

- Soldiers are unable to equip ranged lances (theJavelin andGradivus) inGaiden.
- Owing to their typical lowly status relative to other classes, Soldiers are rarely seen as bosses; the only Soldier to serve as a primary boss in theFire Emblem series to date outside ofskirmish situations is theRisen Chief ofparalogue 3 inAwakening.
