Sigurd (pronounced /ˈsɪɡɚd/[key][1]; Japanese:シグルドSiglud) was a scion ofGrannvale's HouseChalphy, the son and heir of DukeByron and, as a descendant of the CrusaderBaldr, inheritor of the holy weaponTyrfing. Knighted as a Holy Knight of Grannvale, during the Grannvale war withIsaach he fought to defend Grannvale's territory from invasions byVerdane andAgustria, but was rapidly embroiled in the plots ofArvis andManfroy and was framed for crimes against the Grannvale royal family. During his time in Verdane and Agustria, he met his wifeDeirdre and had a son,Seliph.
Sigurd is the main character of the first generation ofFire Emblem: Genealogy of the Holy War, with Seliph succeeding him for the second generation.
Biography
Early life

Sigurd was the eldest of Byron's two children, the other being his younger sisterEthlyn. Their mother died during their youth, after which the Chalphy household was mostly kept together through Ethlyn's efforts as neither Sigurd nor Byron picked up after themselves.[2] Sigurd was educated at the military academy inBelhalla, where he first metQuan andEldigan and formed a strong bond of friendship with the two. On one night during their attendance at the academy, the trio swore an oath to aid each other in times of crisis.[3]
The Verdane incursion
Sigurd remained behind in Chalphy with a handful of knights at the onset of Grannvale's war withIsaach in Grann 757, while Byron departed for war with almost the entire military of Chalphy. Upon receiving word of the incursion ofVerdane's army into Grannvale, Sigurd immediately rode out withAlec andNaoise to aidEdain at the besiegedYngvi Castle, taskingArden with the defense of Chalphy and takingOifey along as a strategist and advisor. He and his forces, backed up by the arrival ofQuan,Azelle andLex, quickly subdued the Verdane occupation in Yngvi, where he learned that Edain had been abducted, and from there crossed the Jun River into Verdane territory to seize Castle Evans. During the battle, Sigurd was approached byArvis, who provided him with asilver sword as a gift from KingAzmur. At Evans, finding no sign of Edain, Sigurd resolved to storm the rest of the country to find her. He was also visited byFilat, a messenger fromBelhalla, who informed Sigurd that he had been ordained as a Holy Knight of Grannvale, and tasked him with the defense of the border from Evans.
With Eldigan promising to cover Sigurd from potential aggression fromAgustria to the north, Sigurd pressed on into Verdane, freeing PrinceShannan ofIsaach and his guardian, PrincessAyra, from PrinceCimbaeth at Castle Genoa. On the way to Castle Marpha, he encountered Edain, who had been freed from captivity in the castle byJamke. At Castle Marpha, after defeating PrinceMunnir, he stepped in to stop a thug harassingDeirdre, with whom he became instantly enamored; to his surprise, she immediately fled Marpha. The two would soon meet again in Verdane'sSpirit Forest, her home, where she offered her assistance in stoppingSandima of theLoptr Church and the two confessed their strong mutual love. With Deirdre's assistance, Sigurd's army slew Sandima and captured the Verdane capital, where he and Oifey found KingBatu dying from wounds inflicted by Sandima. Sigurd learned of the existence of the Loptrians and their role in the Verdane aggression from Batu's dying words.[4]
Uprising in Agustria

Sigurd was entrusted by the capital to govern the Verdane territory following its downfall, using Evans Castle as his base of operations. He and Deirdre were married during their tenure at Evans. During his time in Evans, KingImca ofAgustria was assassinated and succeeded by his son,Chagall, who declared war on Grannvale-held Verdane, arrested Eldigan and authorized an attack on Nordion. In response, Sigurd deployed his army to come toLachesis's aid at Nordion, defeating the forces ofElliot of Heirhein and recruiting Lachesis's support in opposing Chagall. In this skirmish, Sigurd defeated three Agustrian states—Heirhein, Infini and Mackily—and encounteredLewyn, who convinced Sigurd that a peaceful resolution was ideal but that ceasing hostilities now would incur Chagall's wrath upon the citizens. He later metErinys, a Silessean knight who revealed to him Lewyn's true identity as the errant prince of Silesse, and in an audience with the Grannvale messengerFilat learned of the rise of rumors implicating Sigurd in treasonous conspiracy circulating at home. Eventually Sigurd defeated Chagall at the capital, Agusti, but Chagall was saved by Eldigan. Sigurd negotiated with Eldigan a year of Grannvale occupation, with the intent of restoring peace and order before handing the country back to Chagall. On orders from Belhalla, Sigurd adopted Agusti as his base of operations to govern Agustria in this period, and despite his best efforts to seek a peaceful return of Agustria to Chagall, the orders from home never changed and insisted on his continued military presence.
Six months into Sigurd's occupation, the Grannvale governors deployed throughout Agustria took to abusing their power and inciting dissatisfaction in the country's people, and around the same time Chagall secretly worked to assemble a new Agustrian army at Madino Castle, then launched an attack on Sigurd in a bid to get Agusti back by force. Sigurd responded by attacking and conquering Madino, only to find Chagall had escaped to Sylvale Castle in the west during the battle; while he was fighting, Deirdre was abducted byManfroy after leaving Agusti to find Sigurd. In a meeting withClaud andTailtiu, Sigurd learned ofKurth's murder and Byron's disappearance and implication in the crime. After Madino's downfall, Chagall forced Eldigan and the Cross Knights to deploy to fight Sigurd, resulting in Eldigan's death much to Sigurd's distress. Sigurd's army defeated Chagall at Sylvale for a second time, with Chagall dying this time, after which Sigurd was informed by Shannan of Deirdre's disappearance. Sigurd then worked to repel an attack on the Agustrian mainland from theOrgahil pirates, recruitingBrigid and reuniting with Claud, only to be met with the arrival ofLombard andReptor seeking to arrest him for his alleged involvement in Kurth's murder. WithAnnand's assistance, Sigurd fled toSilesse and entered QueenLahna's protection.
Silesse and the Battle of Belhalla

Most of Sigurd's days in Silesse were spent in quiet frustration, as Lahna's attempts to negotiate Sigurd's innocence with King Azmur consistently fell on deaf ears. Quan and Ethlyn parted his company to return to Leonster and raise an army to assist Sigurd in his struggles with Grannvale. Near the end of his time in Lahna's custody, Sigurd was embroiled in the Silessean civil war and fought on Lahna's behalf to protect the country from an attempted coup by her brothers-in-law,Myos andDaccar, only to find that Grannvale had involved itself in the civil war and, at its end, had already conquered Silesse's easternmost reaches in preparation to invade Silesse and capture Sigurd.
Not wanting to endanger Silesse any further, Sigurd instead departed Silesse to lead his army to attack Grannvale's forces first, with the intent of returning to Grannvale to clear his name by force. He foughtAndrey and Lombard at Lubeck Castle, and after capturing it he tasked Oifey and Shannan with taking the infant Seliph, as well as a few other children from his army, and finding refuge in Isaach. He led his army south through the Aed Desert, clearing theVelthomer army out of Phinora Castle en route, only to learn from Phinora's elder that Quan and Ethlynhad been ambushed and killed further south in the desert.
Sigurd's final obstacle was Velthomer Castle, under the guard ofAida,Reptor and their armies. To Sigurd's surprise, Aida commanded her army to turn on Reptor as Sigurd approached and the two successfully defeated Reptor. Following the fight's end, Aida told Sigurd that Arvis had been on his side all along and that he awaited Sigurd's return in Belhalla. Sigurd led his army to Belhalla, where Arvis instead sentenced him and his entire army to death for their crimes of treason, and introduced him to his new wife, Deirdre. Sigurd was confused and pained at seeing how Deirdre no longer remembered him, but before he could do anything Arvis had Deirdre taken back to the castle and ordered his men toexecute Sigurd's army. Sigurd was personally killed by Arvis with a blast ofValflame.
Legacy
Initially following his death, Sigurd was still widely considered by the world at large to be a traitor and murderer. However, as the Grannvale Empire under Arvis descended into Loptrian-influenced tyranny, Sigurd's story was spread by bards, and so he regained popularity among the common people of Jugdral and was hailed as a martyr, the first to try fighting Arvis to protect the world from his schemes.[5] His status as Sigurd's son contributed to Seliph gaining popularity as a symbol of hope for Isaach and later the entirety of Jugdral, and stories of Sigurd told by her mother motivatedFee/Hermina to join Seliph's ranks.[6]
Following his defeat of Arvis late in his liberation war, Seliph was visited by Sigurd and Deirdre's ghosts. Sigurd's ghost warned Seliph to understand the suffering of the common people and not take all the credit for Arvis's defeat.

Analysis
| This character analysis section may not be accurate to every player's experience. |
Sigurd is a prepromoted knight lord and has the stats to match. Unlike other games, his promoted status does not affect his experience gain, and due to the way promotion gains and stat caps are calculated, there is no disadvantage compared to starting out unpromoted. His strength lets him cleanly one-round most early game enemies, and his base speed is enough to double enemies for much of the game. Sigurd's bulk grows quickly as he levels, and between his high HP and defense growths he will quickly reach the point where he can shrug off most physical attacks. Sigurd's speed grows somewhat slower, in comparison to his other growths, but between his high bases and generally slow enemies, this barely hurts him. Low resistance is an enduring problem for Sigurd, with a base resistance of 3, but between his 9 move andCanto, he can often avoid engaging mages in the first place. He also has 2 points ofAuthority, which not only gives all adjacent units +10 hit and avoid but also gives himself said bonus, further increasing his longevity and reliability.
Sigurd's only skill isFollow-Up, but this is all he needs. With a ★ in swords and a B in lances, Sigurd has access to all the strongest weaponry in his generation, which easily compensates for a lack of other offensive skills and grants him some ability to manipulate the weapon triangle. He also enjoys a sibling support with his sisterEthlyn, whose unique role as a mounted healer means she will often be near Sigurd.
As the main character of the first generation, Sigurd has perfect availability. The Prologue and Chapter 1 are full of axe-using opponents that Sigurd can easily dispatch without much risk to himself. The Agustria chapters are not so easily trivialized, but if Sigurd has a few levels under his belt he can solo whole brigades of enemies with Ethlyn's healing support. Chapter 4 is the only time that Sigurd struggles, due to the concentration of fast wind mages and terrain inimical to mounts, though with the proper equipment he is more than capable here. In Chapter 5, Sigurd is slowed down by desert terrain, but is otherwise one of the strongest combat units. In sum, Sigurd's movement and stats allow him to spend the whole game charging ahead of the pack, slaughtering enemies at little risk of death.
Sigurd is hardly impacted by the lack of trading inGenealogy of the Holy War. He is often far ahead of the rest of the army and must seize every castle, making him a frequent boss killer. He will thus quickly accumulate a collection of rings and items while other units flounder in the arena. Sigurd is also given aSilver Sword at the end of the prologue, which few other units can use this early. Thus for much of the game, Sigurd has little competition for resources that other units are too poor to buy in the pawn shop. Once other units start competing for rings, Sigurd still has the advantage of having expensive items already in his inventory. Moreover, Sigurd is completely capable of one rounding most enemies by virtue of his stats alone; if the player wants to make Sigurd even stronger, they can invest in theBrave Lance orBrave Sword, allowing Sigurd to one round even armor knights.
InChapter 5, Sigurd will get access toTyrfing, which only he can use. Once Tyrfing is repaired Sigurd will get a massive +10 to skill and speed, along with a +20 to resistance, making him an even more dominant combat force. The resistance bonus is very useful, as Phinora castle is guarded by many Meteor mages who would otherwise deal heavy damage to him.
Overall, Sigurd starts out as one of the strongest units in the first chapter and doesn't drop off in any way in the later chapters either, making him easily one of the best units in the first generation ofGenealogy of the Holy War.Genealogy is a game with massive groups of enemies where the best way of tackling them is by having one unit overpower them, and all of Sigurd's strengths make him better than any other generation 1 unit at this. He is one of the best users of theLeg Ring both because of his strong combat and the fact that he is required to clear chapters.

Fire Emblem Heroes
- Main article:
Sigurd/Heroes
There are five different variations of Sigurd available inHeroes.
Personality
Sigurd fundamentally means well and legitimately wishes to help people, but is reckless and short-sighted, leaps into battle without thinking it over and does not easily see or think through the full breadth of the consequences of his actions; for instance, as pointed out byLewyn, Sigurd had failed to realize how his invasion of Agustria endangered its innocent citizens.[7] He is a warrior and a knight first and foremost, and as such his first response to a crisis is usually to lead his soldiers to retaliate with military force, even in cases where it would not be advisable. In spite of his behavior he usually does care for innocent people, especially children, when he is actually aware of or forced to confront their presence in an area, refusing to risk their safety in battle.[8] Like his father, he was similarly messy and lazy in his life at home in Chalphy, withEthlyn considering him sloppy for how often she had to clean after him prior to marrying Quan.[2]
Supports
Engage
- Main article:
Sigurd/Bond conversations
As anEmblem, Sigurd does not have any support conversations. However, upon reaching bond level 5, 10, and 20 with any character, he has short bond conversations with them instead, which unlock the next bond level. Increasing bond level provides a variety of bonuses, such as raising the stat bonus Sigurd provides to synchronized units, inheriting weapon proficiencies, unlocking new sync skills and engage weapons, or extending the duration of each engagement.
Endings
Genealogy of the Holy War
Many heroes lost their lives on this path...
...
And Sigurd, the young heir of Chalphy...
...
These brave youths fought to change the world for the better, yet now their unfulfilled dreams lie dead with them on the battlefield...
Was their sacrifice in vain? What were they fighting for all along?
And what of the light...?

Genealogy of the Holy War
| “ | Eldigan: Sigurd... Never did I suspect our blades would someday cross. ...Yet, we are knights. This was always our fate. Sigurd: E-Eldigan! Wait!! | ” | — Sigurd, when fightingEldigan, inChapter 3. |
|---|
| “ | Chagall: Sigurd! Feel the full force of your months of humiliation of me! Sigurd: King Chagall, you've done naught but murder countless innocents. ...And Eldigan... You're as foul as they come! Chagall: Silence, you fool! You understand nothing of me! You die, Sigurd, here and now! | ” | — Sigurd, when fightingChagall, in Chapter 3. |
|---|
| “ | Lombard: Bwahaha... Would you look at that. The little brat's made it, as well! How perfect! I'll reunite you with your dearly departed father. He ought to be lonely by now! Sigurd: Lombard... LOMBARD!! You will pay for what you did to my father! | ” | — Sigurd, when fightingLombard, inChapter 5. |
|---|
| “ | Reptor: Sigurd! So you've come to spread your evil ways in our holy fatherland, traitor scum! Sigurd: You're the only traitor here, Reptor! For your fiendish crimes against both my father and the late Prince Kurth, I've come to exact justice upon you! Reptor: Pah! Don't make me laugh, you naïve twit! Consider this a lesson in politics and power! Your father had no power, and hence he is dead! Even a common knight such as yourself can surely appreciate this fundamental truth! Sigurd: A knight appreciates honor and justice. I see neither of those in your actions! For too long you've soiled Grannvale's honor. I've come to set the fatherland to rights! Reptor: Such a pity your hard work is all for naught! Byron died a sad, pitiful traitor, and you will meet his very same fate at my hands! In the face of the supreme power of thunder, Mjölnir, you are but a candle to be snuffed! Sigurd, your dying thoughts will lament your complete and utter lack of power! Ahahaha... | ” | — Sigurd, when fightingReptor, in Chapter 5. |

All those years ago, when we were students at the Belhalla academy? You, me, and Eldigan. Dear friends and fierce rivals in equal measure? Surely you recall that night, talking late about our hopes and dreams, and pledging our aid to one another in times of need?
Sigurd: Ah, of course! I remember it well." —Quan and Sigurd in thePrologue,Fire Emblem: Genealogy of the Holy War - ↑"Batu: No... It's too late for me... Heed my word, Sigurd, for there is one final thing I must tell you... The miser here... the grief spreading across Jugdral... it is all the will of the dark priesthood... They blight our world from the shadows, all in the name of the revival of their dark god, Loptous... Sandima... was one of them... He twisted us to war with Grannvale... for the sake of the cult's madness. The... the dark priests... they infect every corner of our world... Sigurd... Stay vigilant, lest you be tricked too! I... I failed the people of Verdane... Sigurd, I beg you... Make this right... Protect... my... people..." —Batu to Sigurd at the end ofChapter 1,Fire Emblem: Genealogy of the Holy War
- ↑"The Crusader Sigurd... As recently as a decade ago, he was reviled as a traitor, but nowadays he's a popular folk hero. He saw through the Emperor's schemes from the beginning, and died trying to protect the world from his machinations. Bards spread his tale across the land, and it captivated the hearts of every man, woman, and child suffering under the Empire's rule... And so he's become more legend than man." —August inChapter 19,Fire Emblem: Thracia 776
- ↑"Actually, I kinda want to join that Isaachian rebel army. When I was little, mom told me stories about the paladin Sigurd and his brave allies, and those have always meant a lot to me. Lately I've been hearing about how Sigurd's son's somewhere in Isaach, raising a revolution. And it all just sort of clicked, y'know? I knew that's where I need to be, so I just ran right out of home to try and find him." —Fee/Hermina inChapter 6,Fire Emblem: Genealogy of the Holy War
- ↑"Lewyn: You're that Sigurd fellow, aren't you? It's obvious what your little hobby is: war! Clearly you've got so much spare time, you spend it starting war after war!
Sigurd: Come again? You seem angry, but-
Lewyn: Don't play dumb! Think about the people of all the countries that you're flattening! You come barging in, swords flashing, and all you do is ruin the lives of normal folk who're trying to make a living here!
Sigurd: You're right. My apologies, Lewyn... I didn't even think about that, but I can't stand knowing I've done this to them.
Lewyn: Words are just words without actions backing them up. If you really feel so bad, then why not pull your army out?
Sigurd: Mm, you're right... Very well. I'll consult with my troops and arrange a retreat.
Lewyn: Wait, you're serious about this?
Sigurd: Of course. I've been mulling over retreating for a while already, and you just gave me the answer to all of this. I've had enough of the war approach. I think I'd rather seek a diplomatic answer.
Lewyn: Yeah, no. Trying to get through to Chagall now would be a total waste of everyone's time. Besides, if you lot pull out now, then nothing stands between a peeved king and all the citizens who've helped you so far. Are you sure you're okay with leaving them all hanging like that?
Sigurd: Well, no, but... Er... I...
Lewyn: Ahahaha! Y'know, I guess I was wrong about you. You're alright, Sigurd. Say, why don't I help you finish this fight up?" —Lewyn and Sigurd inChapter 2,Fire Emblem: Genealogy of the Holy War - ↑"Lahna: Grannvale's Lord Lombard has already swept in with an immense army and conquered Lubeck Castle, to our east. The people of Silesse are terrified that this will prove to be but a prelude to a full-scale war with Grannvale.
Sigurd: Your Highness, I believe Lombard's army is here only for me. I've no desire to needlessly endanger you or your citizens, after all you've done for us. My men and I are leaving. Now." —Lahna and Sigurd inChapter 4,Fire Emblem: Genealogy of the Holy War - ↑"Sigludシグルド
