Shez (Japanese:シェズShez) is theavatar unit and protagonist ofFire Emblem Warriors: Three Hopes. They are a mercenary seeking revenge onByleth.
Biography
Shez was born in a remote mountain village in Ordelia territory inLeicester. Their biological parents died when Shez was young and they were adopted by a woman who gave them an education on par with that of a noble. Eventually, Shez's adopted mother died as well, and they were promptly thrown out of their village. Shez became a mercenary fighting alongsideCaptain Berling.
One day, the Berling Mercenaries are wiped out byByleth. Shez is rescued from death and granted great power by a mysterious being namedArval, and swears revenge. Six months later, they chance upon the noblesEdelgard von Hresvelg,Dimitri Alexandre Blaiddyd, andClaude von Riegan being pursued by bandits and help the group. Afterwards, Shez is taken to the Officer's Academy atGarreg Mach Monastery and enrolls there as a student with the house of their choice—theBlack Eagles,Blue Lions, orGolden Deer. Afterwards, they rescueMonica von Ochs from the surviving bandits andan unidentified faction. Monica names the librarianTomas as her abductor, and Tomas displays similar powers to the ones granted to Shez by Arval before fleeing arrest. Afterwards, Edelgard launches a coup to overthrow her corrupt uncleLord Arundel, who is in league with Tomas, Dimitri sets out to suppress an insurrection by his uncle and regentRufus, and Claude defends Fódlan's Locket fromAlmyran invaders led by PrinceShahid. Shez accompanies whichever house they chose, and afterwards remains in their chosen lord's service for the next two years.
Fire Emblem Warriors: Three Hopes
Role
Shez appears inFire Emblem Warriors: Three Hopes as the main playable protagonist. Like withByleth inThree Houses, the player is given options on how Shez will respond to dialogue from other characters, but unlike Byleth inThree Houses, Shez's dialogue is fully voiced.

There are nine different variations of Shez available inHeroes.
Personality
Note:As a player avatar, certain aspects of Shez's personality are influenced by the player's choices.
Shez is driven by their desire to defeat theAshen Demon throughout most of the game. In order to achieve their goal, they are often seen training. Despite this, they reflect on their goal to defeat the Ashen Demon, and even questionArval when they push them toward that goal. Nontheless, for most of the game, they trust Arval, often bringing up suggestions made by them to their respective army's leader. They are often very reckless, acting before thinking about the consequences of their actions, even if that may cost them their life.
Throughout most of theirsupport conversations, they support their partner with their issues, demonstrating their compassionate side. However, they make it clear that as a mercenary, they cannot afford to demonstrate the same attitude on the battlefield. Although they understand why some of their allies don't trust them, they often lament the same fact and wish for more trust from their allies.

Endings
At the end of the game, Shez receives a letter from the unit theMerc Whistle was given to. If the Merc Whistle was not given to any unit or the unit who received it has died, a letter from Shez reminiscing about their adventure is shown instead:
Shez: What an adventure we've had! Hard to believe it all started with one little dust-up in the woods. We've seen each other through so many battles, and yet I know we've got a lot more to go. Chances are I'll stay and fight for this place, but don't hold it against me if I slip away from time to time for an adventure of my own. And while my future isn't set in stone, I know one thing for certain—right here, right now, this is where I live and breathe.
