Biography

Shannam is an impersonator of PrinceShannan ofIsaach. Settling inTarrah, he uses his looks to charm women. During the siege of Tarrah, he refuses to help with the defense of the city.[2] During the final assault on Tarrah, Shannam decides to flee the city; however, he is spotted by the bardHomer, to whom he reveals his real name before leaving.

Later, while working as a mercenary under bandits, he encounters Shannan's nieceMareeta, who confuses him for Shannan. Shannam gives her vague hints, accidentally teaching herAstra in the process.[3] Not long after, Shannam starts working under theLoptr Church in Millefeuille Forest. During the battle, he meets back with Homer, who convinces him to joinLeif's liberation army, whom he accompanies until the liberation ofMunster.

DuringChapter 9, ifJeanne orHermina visits one of the villages in the northwest of the map, someone claiming to be Shannan appears and tries to ask them to dinner. When asked to show her theBalmung, he produces aDracoshield instead and fails to convince her of its authenticity.

Though the group of villages in the northwest of Chapter 9 are unnamed inGenealogy of the Holy War, they match the location ofTarrah provided on the maps ofThracia 776. This is the same location where Shannam is first found inThracia 776.

Analysis

This character analysis section may not be accurate to every player's experience.

Shannam is a prepromoted level 1Swordmaster that joins inChapter 16B ofThracia 776 by talking toHomer. His stats are incredibly low, being equal to Swordmaster'sclass bases in everything except for his 1 Luck, and he even has aFCM of 0 on top of that. His 9 Speed is enough to avoid being doubled by most enemies, but even then he gets 2HKO'd by most enemies, and can even get OHKO'd by some stronger ones. Likewise, despite havingAdept, Shannam's low stats prevent it from having any meaningful activation rate, as his 6 Con forces him to use lighter weapons. He contributes nothing in his join chapter, as it features loads ofMercenaries and Swordmasters too fast for him to double, and too evasive in forests for him to hit. TheIron Blade he starts with cripples his attack speed down to zero, making him prone to getting one-rounded by almost anything, so it is necessary to give him something lighter, which he will struggle to deal any meaningful damage with his 5 Strength.

Shannam has high growths inHP,strength, speed, andluck. However, as he joins promoted, his experience gain is low, so getting him out of his poor bases will take a while. His other stats only have a very low growth at 5%. His lowskill stat in particular will give him middling hit rates in battle. His C-rank in swords is somewhat serviceable, but at this stage in the game even a unit with a low starting sword rank likeCarrion will have at least a C in swords, and he will be locked out of the best swords until he can make his way to a B-rank. There are ways to make Shannam good at combat if the player is very dedicated, but doing so requires a lot of effort and investment, and there is nothing special about him when trained up that justifies his usage, outside of attempting to make a poor unit good.

Shannam is the only character in the game with theBargain skill, which allows him to purchase items fromvendors andarmories at a discount, though unfortunately there are not many shops selling useful items left beyond the point where he joins, and you would have likely amassed enough gold at this point to make his contribution unnecessary. If he has theMember Card in his inventory, he can buy stat boosters in thesecret shop duringChapter 24 at a reduced price, though they are still expensive and come way too late in the game to usually be worth it.

Personality

Despite his imitation of the prince ofIsaach, Shannam does not rival the man in skill or confidence. According toHomer, Shannam also sounds nothing like Shannan.[4] He does, however, have more than a passing resemblance to Shannan physically. WhenMareeta requests that he teach her theAstra skill, which he does not know, he gives her vague advice in an attempt to maintain his cover.

While Shannam does take work as a mercenary, he primarily uses his looks to mooch off of people fooled by his appearance.[2]

Endings

Shannam, Boastful Myrmidon
Instead of working for the New Kingdom of Thracia, Shannam returned to his hometown in Isaach. He then quit being a mercenary and lived a normal life.

Shannam: ...Well, just the beginnings, I suppose...
    Mareeta: R-Really? Thank you!
Shannam: Hmm, I wasn't expecting this. Well, I'll just give her some random tips and get it over with... Astra is not only about your skill. It is your heart that is important. Once your skill and your heart become one...only then will you be able to perform Astra.
Mareeta: My skill and my heart?
Shannam: Right. First, try swinging your sword.
Mareeta: How should I swing... Can you show me?
Shannam: Erg... N-No, Astra is only learned after hard practice. If you see how it is done, you tend to copy it instead of developing it on your own... Yeah...
Mareeta: Oh, I see... All right, I'll try. Ha!
    Shannam: No. Try again.
    Mareeta: Ya!
Shannam: No, no. Your heart is being left behind. Your sword and heart must be in unison. ...I have no idea what I'm saying...
Mareeta: My blade and my heart...in unison... Haaaa! Huh? Did I just...
    Shannam: ...... ...What?
Mareeta: ...No, that wasn't it. It can't be this easy. Right, Lord Shannan?
    Shannam: Huh? O-Oh! Y-Y-Yeah... O-Of course not. Y-You can't call that Astra...
    Mareeta: Good, I thought so...
Shannam: A-Anyway, I taught you the beginnings of it, like I promised. I have to get going.
