Shadows Behind the Scenes (Japanese:暗躍する影たちShadows Operating Behind the Scenes) is the firstside quest inFire Emblem: New Mystery of the Emblem. In order to reach this chapter, the player must either complete the previous chapter in a certain number of turns depending upon difficulty or complete the Prologue with one allied casualty or less.

A group of assassins led byClarisse sets out to kill every one ofMarth's former allies in theWar of Shadows, starting withWrys. As the Altean army approaches to save him,Katarina warns her not to underestimate Marth's forces. Marth and his allies successfully drive off the assassins and rescue Wrys, who offers to shaveKris's head bald.

Strategy

Wrys starts off in the middle of the map with a Knight and Archer driving him into a pincer. If you haven't killed or otherwise dealt with them by about turn 4, he's getting penned in the dead book. To avoid this, you will need to send in a flier or two to kill the Archer as soon as possible; the Knight will attack the fliers on enemy phase as long as they are in his attack range and Wrys is not. This is complicated by the starting group of two Archers and three Knights, the former of whom threaten to kill any fliers in range. To avoid this, kill both Archers on turn 1 and either kill the Knights or manipulate their AI into keeping your fliers safe.Palla with aSteel Lance can notably one-round Archers regardless of whether she promoted or not (on Lunatic she will need a strength level orSilver Lance for any 6 defense Archer).Kris will also likely be able to one-round if they're at a high level, though male Kris will need to promote to become a flier. Once Wrys is safe, the rest of the map is straight forwards, with some reinforcements that can be easily blocked off and no boss on the gate.
Trivia
- Although it may appear impossible to reach Clarisse due to her fleeing after a few turns in the chapter, it is possible to reach her using anAnew staff obtained from theonline shop while it was still in service. As such she has encounter and defeat quotes.[1]
