Numerous artists have made significant contributions to individual games in theFire Emblem series by providing illustrations of its characters, settings and scenarios. These artists, and the games in which each is credited, are summarized here.

Katsuyoshi Koya

Katsuyoshi Koya (Japanese:小屋勝義Koya Katsuyoshi) provided the vast majority of the card illustrations for theFire Emblem Trading Card Game, with their work covering the entire casts ofFire Emblem: Shadow Dragon & the Blade of Light,Mystery of the Emblem,Genealogy of the Holy War, andThracia 776, and is also credited as a graphic designer forMystery andGenealogy. The character and class concept art forGenealogy of the Holy War was drawn by Koya, and would be used as the basis for the in-game character portraits.

Although they were not responsible for the original character artwork used in the box art and manual of any of these games, their work had effectively replaced those forMystery andGenealogy and was the most widely used to represent characters from these two games until the late 2010s, including being used inFire Emblem Awakening for thebonus unit portraits for the cast ofGenealogy. Their artwork was also used as the basis for theFire Emblem: Genealogy of the Holy War Exceed figurine series, and for the designs of theMystery andGenealogy cast inFire Emblem Cipher. In 2008, they also contributed two "bonus artworks" ofLena andBarst forFire Emblem: Shadow Dragon.

Mayumi Hirota

Mayumi Hirota (Japanese:広田麻由美Hirota Mayumi) provided the character artwork forFire Emblem: Thracia 776, having first come into contact with the series through her work on theFire Emblem: Treasure art book in 1999; in an interview published inTreasure, directorShouzou Kaga said he considered her illustrations to be the perfect representation of his ideas for the characters ofGenealogy of the Holy War and, later,Thracia 776.[1] She was also responsible for the art bookFire Emblem: Thracia 776 Illustrated Works and an assortment of other merchandise art accompanyingThracia 776. HerTreasure illustrations were reused for the first series of theFire Emblem Trading Card Game, and she would continue to work with Shouzou Kaga after he left Intelligent Systems, serving as the character designer forTearRing Saga: Yutona Heroes War Chronicles andTearRing Saga Series: Berwick Saga. She passed away on December 13th, 2018.[2]

Rika Suzuki

Rika Suzuki (Japanese:鈴木理華Suzuki Rika) provided the cutscene illustrations which accompanied the original live broadcasts ofFire Emblem: Archanea Saga. They also provided the illustrations for Ginichiro Suzuki'sfive-part novel adaptation ofFire Emblem: Genealogy of the Holy War and Mie Takase'stwo-part novel adaptation ofFire Emblem: The Sacred Stones.[3] They later returned to the series in 2012 to contribute artwork ofSeliph for theFire Emblem Awakening DLC packageLost Bloodlines 3.

Eiji Kaneda

Eiji Kaneda (Japanese:金田榮路Kaneda Eiji) provided the character artwork forFire Emblem: The Binding Blade and, although he is uncredited,Fire Emblem: The Blazing Blade as well according to Daisuke Izuka.[4] He also contributed two card illustrations for the Jugdral Anthology set of theFire Emblem Trading Card Game, and later returned to the series to provide the artwork forIke in the DLC packageRogues & Redeemers 3.

Sachiko Wada

Sachiko Wada (Japanese:ワダサチコWada Sachiko) is credited as contributing to the character portraits and other duties in all games fromThracia 776 toRadiant Dawn. Her most prominent contribution to the series, however, is as the director of and character artist forFire Emblem: The Sacred Stones. She also contributed two "bonus artworks" ofPalla andJulian forFire Emblem: Shadow Dragon, as well as the artwork forLeif inFire Emblem Awakening's DLC packageLost Bloodlines 1.

Daisuke Izuka

Daisuke Izuka (Japanese:井塚大介Izuka Daisuke) provided a limited selection of character artwork forFire Emblem: New Mystery of the Emblem, also contributing toFire Emblem: Shadow Dragon a small set of character artwork depicting the game's seven new playable characters. His first contribution to the series was as a graphic designer forFire Emblem: The Blazing Blade in a part-time capacity, with the illustrations of thefire dragons being his work,[4] and he is credited with contributions on every game between then andNew Mystery. He is notably credited for working on the character portraits inShadow Dragon, but notNew Mystery despite the majority of hisShadow Dragon work remaining nearly unedited inNew Mystery. He later provided the artwork ofEirika for theFire Emblem Awakening DLC packageSmash Brethren 2 and, being primarily a professional illustrator for various trading card games, served as the art director forFire Emblem Cipher.[5]

Yusuke Kozaki

Yusuke Kozaki (Japanese:コザキユースケKozaki Yūsuke) provided the character artwork forFire Emblem Awakening andFire Emblem Fates.[6] His first contact with the series was in theFire Emblem Trading Card Game, to which he contributed three card illustrations for the Jugdral Chronology set. In an interview with the late Nintendo presidentSatoru Iwata, Kozaki described how he was first contacted to work onAwakening when he received an email request from Intelligent Systems to design sixty characters for an unidentified game, to which his first response was "Is this Fire Emblem?" and also admitted that prior to being hired forAwakening, he had never completed aFire Emblem game before.[7]

Hidari

Hidari (Japanese:Hidari; literally, "Left-Side") provided the character artwork forFire Emblem Echoes: Shadows of Valentia.

Long before work began onEchoes: Shadows of Valentia, the staff of Intelligent Systems had hoped to hire Hidari forAwakeningdownloadable content andFire Emblem Cipher after hearing high praise for his work from post-New Mystery series art director Toshiyuki Kusakihara, but Hidari was not available for either job. To ensure that he was available, they arranged in advance to commission him forEchoes: Shadows of Valentia.[8]

Tohru Ohsawa

The artist behind theBattle of Revolution April Fools'website artwork.[9] TheFire Emblem Echoes: Shadows of Valentia developers stated in an interview that he has done artwork for pastFire Emblem series games but which ones exactly were unspecified.[9] His art style, most notably theMarth sketch, bears a resemblance to the character artwork fromFire Emblem Gaiden, possibly indicating him as the uncredited artist for that game.

The above listed individuals are by no means the only artists associated withFire Emblem games; each individual game usually has several artists, sometimes including the above, who work on creating the graphics in the games themselves. Additionally, the individuals responsible for providing the character and box artwork forShadow Dragon & the Blade of Light,Gaiden and, prior to Koya's work,Mystery of the Emblem andGenealogy of the Holy War are currently unknown.

Fire Emblem Trading Card Game

While the majority of the character artwork for cards in theFire Emblem Trading Card Game was the work of Koya and Hirota, a plethora of other artists contributed card artwork for the Jugdral Anthology card series and certain promotional cards in 2003. These artists included Eiji Kaneda and Yusuke Kozaki, among numerous other illustrators with no other known tie to theFire Emblem series.

Manga artists

Many games in the series have been adapted into the form of manga, each of these being done by a different artist.

Fire Emblem Awakening DLC contributors

In addition to featuring new work from Kita, Wada, Suzuki, Izuka, and Kaneda, a large number of other artists with no prior connection to theFire Emblem series also contributed individual character artwork for the DLC packages inFire Emblem Awakening. All of these illustrations were later recycled for the characters' appearances in theFire Emblem: One Hundred Songs of Heroes card set. Some of these artists have since contributed toFire Emblem Cipher.
