Seliph Baldos Chalphy (pronounced /ˈsɛlɪf/[key][1]; Japanese:セリス・バルドス・シアルフィCelice Baldos Chalphy[2]) is the son of the lateSigurd andDeirdre, heir toGrannvale's former HouseChalphy, and the half-brother of Imperial PrinceJulius and PrincessJulia of the Grannvale Empire. He is a descendant of both the CrusaderBaldr through Sigurd, and of SaintHeim of the rulingBelhalla dynasty through Deirdre; as the eldest of Deirdre's children, he was as such the true heir to the Grannvale throne. Born inAgustria in the year 759 during its occupation by the Grannvale forces led by his father, he was sent into hiding in the ouskirts ofIsaach for his own protection, taken byOifey and Isaach's PrinceShannan, along withLarcei,Scáthach, andDiarmuid. There in the aftermath of theBattle of Belhalla, he lived in hiding in the village ofTirnanog for seventeen years, raised byEdain – who acted as a surrogate mother – and Oifey, and taught martial arts by Shannan.
As the years passed and Shannan began to organize a resistance army against the tyranny of the Grannvale Empire from Tirnanog, Seliph's existence slowly became known to the people of Isaach and he became a figure of hope for the oppressed masses, dubbed the "Scion of Light". This culminated in the year 777, when the Grannvale forces occupying Isaach learned of his existence and of his whereabouts and dispatched soldiers to Tirnanog to subjugate it; in response, Seliph led a small group out to combat the occupation forces and from there, on the advice ofLewyn, leave Isaach to recruit more members for a liberation force, free the other nations ofJugdral from the tyranny of Grannvale, and ultimately take the fight back to the capitalBelhalla.
Seliph is the main character of the second generation ofFire Emblem: Genealogy of the Holy War, succeeding Sigurd and finishing what he started. He does appear inFire Emblem: Thracia 776, but only briefly and not in a playable capacity.
Biography
When troops of theDozel occupation force were sighted approaching Tirnanog from the northern Ganeishire castle, Seliph chose to reveal himself to the world by departing to protect the village, despiteScáthach's concern about the difficulty of doing so with Oifey and Shannan absent, and so he departed with Scáthach,Larcei andLana, soon backed up with the arrival of Oifey,Lester andDiarmuid. Upon claiming Ganeishire and defeating its master, GeneralHarold, Seliph encounteredLewyn, who entrusted him withJulia before leaving forLeonster. From there, Seliph freed the rest of Isaach and killed KingDanann, the appointed ruler of Isaach and the leader of the occupation of the country for the Grannvale Empire. Afterward, Lewyn returned from his work in Leonster, bringing news of the rise of scattered rebellions across Jugdral and encouraging Seliph to leave Isaach and form such a rebellion, citing him as a potential savior and the best hope the world has. While initially reluctant, Seliph accepted the duty.
From there, Seliph headed to the south through theAed Desert toLeonster, to meet up with his cousin PrinceLeif and assist him in his own liberation army. On the way, they freedDahna and theAed Shrine; in the former, Seliph learned of theMiracle of Dahna from Lewyn, while at the Shrine he found the remnants of the descendants of theLoptrian Empire, the Shrine's former occupants. From Dahna, Seliph's forces entered theMunster District and, working with Leif's group, defeated KingBloom ofFriege and conquered Ulster, freeing the north of the Thracian peninsula. His next move was a protracted war withThracia, an ally of Grannvale, ending in the death of its KingTravant and the escape of its PrinceArion.
At the end ofFriege'ssix month long siege of CastleLeonster followingLeif's recapture of it, Seliph's army launched an assault on CastleUlster, causing the Friege forces to retreat to reinforce their headquarters.Diarmuid arrived in Leonster as a messenger to Leif from Seliph, informing Leif that Seliph intended to claim Ulster in only a few days. Leif departed Leonster to back Seliph up, but by the time he got to Ulster, Seliph's forces had already conquered it, and there Leif met Seliph, Lewyn and Julia for the first time. In their brief meeting, it was decided that Seliph's forces would proceed to assaultConnacht while Leif's would takeMunster, where the two groups would later meet up.
After the fall of Munster and the deaths ofRaydrik andVeld, Leif received word fromFinn that Connacht had fallen to Seliph's forces, and soon after Seliph himself arrived in Munster to congratulate Leif for his victory. Seliph told Leif that from there, Northern Thracia would unite into a single country under Leif, and invited Leif to continue to assist him in the liberation of Jugdral. The two then pledged to each other their lifelong friendship and brotherhood, like their fathers Sigurd andQuan before them.[3]
With the entire Thracian peninsula subdued, Seliph led his army throughMiletos, for the quickest route through to Grannvale; while resting at Peruluke Castle, Julia was abducted byManfroy while Seliph was otherwise occupied. After liberating the nation and preventing the recapture of its children for thechild hunts endorsed by the empire, the army crossed its strait and arrived back in Chalphy, under the guard of EmperorArvis and hisRotritter. Seliph rescued the bishopPalmarch, a former servant of his father, and from him received Tyrfing as entrusted to Palmark by Arvis. With Tyrfing, Seliph confronted and killed Arvis and reclaimed his ancestral home.
Before Seliph laythe final stretch of the war: storming through Grannvale itself and seizingBelhalla, the capital. His army's first move was to reclaimEdda, then confront the forces ofDozel led byBrian and hisGrauritter and seize Dozel itself, then defeatHilda and herGelbritter and seizeFriege; as they progressed from castle to castle, Lewyn revealed to Seliph the full origin story of the Twelve Crusaders, Julia's identity as his half-sister, Julius's status as the vessel ofLoptous, and the necessity of Julia and theBook of Naga to bring down Julius. Meanwhile, Julia had been hypnotized by Manfroy, and was set on the battlefield to fight Seliph's army. AtVelthomer, Seliph confronted and killed Manfroy, freeing Julia from hypnosis, and the two found the Book of Naga hidden away in Velthomer Castle. With the Book of Naga in hand, Seliph and Julia confronted and killed Julius, ending the Grannvale Empire's seventeen-year reign.

Analysis
| This character analysis section may not be accurate to every player's experience. |
Seliph joins inChapter 6 ofGenealogy of the Holy War and is the main character of the 2nd generation. He begins with mediocre bases aside fromluck, but he has excellent growth rates across the board, including respectable growths in areas such asmagic andresistance, which are usually much lower for physical units. His solid magic makes him one of the best users of magic swords like theLight Brand. Because of his mediocre bases, Seliph may struggle dealing significant damage to enemies at first, and will have trouble traversingGenealogy's huge maps with his 6movement. To aid him, Seliph can be given powerful weapons such as aSilver Sword or aBrave Sword, especially if they have 50 or more kills on them, while Seliph's movement can be improved by giving him theLeg Ring. Seliph also has three leadership stars, which provide extrahit andavoid to units within three spaces of Seliph, making him a great support unit against hard to hit bosses.
Seliph's inventory varies depending on his father's inventory inChapter 5, besides gold which he can inherit 12000 at most. The optimal setup for Seliph is considered to be a Brave Sword, Leg Ring,Paragon Ring,Power Ring,Speed Ring andShield Ring. Seliph also does well with aMagic Ring in combination with theLight Brand. The reason why Seliph is considered the best inheritor of these items is because he is needed to seize castles, meaning that you can only progress as quickly as Seliph can. While this is mostly important for low-turn count playthroughs,Genealogy's level design greatly favors making several units as strong as possible to overpower the game's large groups of enemies. Other than inheriting their inventory, Seliph also inherits two useful skills and two types ofHoly Blood from his parents: from his father, Major Baldr Blood andFollow-Up, and minor Naga Blood andNihil from his motherDeirdre. Both allow Seliph to double attack and block effects of dangerous enemies' sword skills and critical hits, respectively.
After reaching level 20, Seliph can promote into aKnight Lord, giving him a mount and a B-rank inlances. Lances are mostly useless to Seliph due to their higherweight, but gaining a mount is very valuable inGenealogy, as it improves his movement and gives him access toCanto. He also doesn't take bonus damage from Horseslayers thanks to Nihil. Though Seliph'sspeed cap is a bit low, it's still high enough for him to double most enemies, and this minor issue is remedied at the end ofChapter 10 when Seliph gainsTyrfing, which gives him a huge increase in speed and resistance. With the legendary sword's bonuses, Seliph will easily one-round almost anyone he encounters, including bosses, and will have enough resistance to not get affected by enemy status staves.
It should be noted that Seliph is somewhat dependent on Tyrfing for his late game performance, and that obtaining Tyrfing more or less requires having trained fliers; ifFee/Hermina andAltena are dead/not recruited or otherwise cannot kill the fiveDark Mages sent to get rid of Tyrfing, then Tyrfing is basically a lost cause. If that happens, then Seliph's Endgame performance becomes a lot worse due to Knight Lord having bad stat caps and Endgame enemies being higher level and coming with good equipment; without rings to patch these stat problems, some, likeScipio,Ishtar andSimia, can double if not outright one-round him due to Seliph's caps being too low to compete with them. He's still capable of fighting generics somewhat well, but Seliph loses viability as a bosskiller without Tyrfing.
Overall, Seliph can start out somewhat weak, but with properinheritance and training, he can potentially become one the most powerful characters in the game.

Genealogy of the Holy War
In the royal capital of Belhalla itself, with overwhelming support from the public, Seliph was officially hailed as their king. The newly anointed King Seliph devoted himself to rebuilding his land and bringing peace to all, his goal nothing short of a prosperous world free of oppression and bigotry.
And by his side, one would always find
his loving, ever-smiling wife, QueenSeliph's lover...
his sister, Princess Julia, regarding his toil with the warmest of eyes...
In ages to come, the people of Jugdral tell legends of a divine king of ages past. None shall ever forget his name: Seliph.

Genealogy of the Holy War
| “ | Danann: I-it's you! The spawn of Sigurd! Blast... My father will be avenged! Seliph: King Danann... You've tortured this land, and brought misery and death, for too long. Today, you shall face justice! | ” | — Seliph, when fightingDanann inChapter 6. |
|---|
| “ | Bloom: Y-you! You're Sigurd's whelp... You won't leave here alive! Seliph: I believe that's my line, King Bloom. You've nowhere to run this time! Bloom: Curses... I'll drag you down to the grave with me, whelp! | ” | — Seliph, when fightingBloom inChapter 8. |
|---|
| “ | Arion: So... You're the famous Prince Seliph... Heh, I trust you'll make for a fine foe. Shall we begin our duel, then? Seliph: Prince Arion, please! Lay down your arms! It isn't too late to end this peacefully! Arion: Enough! I've nothing left to say. Now, come! Come acquaint yourself with Gungnir, Seliph! | ” | — Seliph, when fightingArion inChapter 9. |
|---|
| “ | Seliph: You... Emperor Arvis! Why... Why did you betray my father... Arvis: At long last... Seliph. I must commend your courage, boy. But courage cannot save you now. Not since your dear departed father have I seen such a pathetic worm... My flames shall purge you from this world! | ” | — Seliph, when fightingArvis inChapter 10. |
|---|
| “ | Manfroy: Kehehe... You've come at last! I've been awaiting you for a long time. Seliph: Manfroy! It was you who cursed Julia, was it no? Manfroy: So I did. And so long as I live, my puppet shall remain! Hee hee hee! She's every bit as helpless before my magic as her mother was... Seliph: I should have known. If not for you, Mother... Gah! All of this misery... All these agonizing years... It was all your doing from the outset! Manfroy: Heh... You've realized at long last. Everything I've done has led to this moment: the revival of my lord Loptous. And at long last, it is so! Loptous's advent in the form of Prince Julius is complete, and darkness shall soon engulf the world. You cannot prevent it. Nobody can... Seliph: Manfroy, you... Father's grief... Mother's despair... If not for you and your foul ambitions, none of this would have ever happened... Damn you, Manfroy! I cannot allow you to win... I will not... You'll NEVER know mercy for your crimes! | ” | — Seliph, when fightingManfroy in theEndgame. |

| Seliph is the son of Sigurd and Deirdre. Like his father, he's inherited the power of the crusader Baldr, and he's a great swordsman to boot! | While Seliph comes from a noble background, his early childhood was full of strife. His mother, Deirdre, was abducted by the Loptr Church, while his father, Sigurd, lost his life after becoming embroiled in political turmoil in the Grannvale Empire... | While still only a baby, Seliph was taken to Isaach, where he grew into a strong young man. He then set out to avenge his father and topple the new Grannvale Empire, which ruled the continent with an iron fist. | Fighting alongside his half sister, Julia, Seliph succeeded in defeating Grannvale. When people saw him wielding Tyrfing, his father's blade, they started to call him the Scion of Light! | ||||||||||

Now, the Scion of Light is making a special appearance dressed in a brand-new outfit! | Seliph is the son of Sigurd, and a descendant of the crusader Baldr. You know, there's something about this outfit that makes him look a lot like his father! | And take a look at his weapon—it's none other than Tyrfing, the legendary sword inherited by the lords of Chalphy! | Seliph fights for justice, guided by both the blade and the ideals he inherited from his father. And now, he's wearing just the outfit to achieve even greater feats! | ||||||||||

| Seliph, the Scion of Light himself, is here to make an appearance at the bridal festival—wearing a special outfit of his own! | Here it is: a very elegant-looking number in white! Ah, and I see that there are some very Seliph blue accents on his sleeves, boots, and the lining of his cape! | For this outing, Seliph's equipped himself with a hefty axe. The base of the blade features floral embellishments to match the rose corsage he's wearing! | Groom's attire isn't exactly something that Seliph wears every day, so he's been feeling a little anxious. But if you ask me, he totally looks the part! | ||||||||||

|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| The Day of the Twelve festival was started to celebrate the achievements of the 12 crusaders, who are praised as saviors in the annals of Jugdral's history. Leif and Seliph are descendants of the crusaders, and they've come to join the festivities! | As you can see, they're both wearing special attire for the festival. Leif's wearing a striking red-and-gold outfit, with a beautiful golden bow to match! And is it just me, or does that arrow have a rather radiant aura around it? | Meanwhile, Seliph's outfit is accented by a dignified, modest blue. Given he's called the Scion of Light, the dazzling aura around his dagger makes it almost seem like it was made just for him! | Just as you'd expect, these cousins fight in perfect sync with each other and make for a powerful team. I'm sure their teamwork will be of great aid to the Order of Heroes! | ||||||||||

Trivia
- There is a glitch inFire Emblem: Genealogy of the Holy War that causes Seliph to fall in love with Daisy without them gaining any love points.[citation needed]
- Despite having a negativelove growth withJulia, it is possible to pair Seliph and Julia as lovers by exploiting thejealousy bug if the game was not reset.
- Provided that none of them have lovers,Lana/Muirne andLarcei/Creidne can be placed adjacent to both Seliph and Julia in a square formation; jealousy will cause Julia to "steal" 5 love points each from Lana/Muirne and Larcei/Creidne, for a total of 10 love points. Julia's negative growth of −5 will be negated for a net result of +5 love points, and if enough turns pass while in this formation, Seliph and Julia will become lovers.

- ↑"Leif: Lord Seliph! We're only here because you intervened at Leonster. The credit for this victory is yours.
Seliph: No, North Thracia was liberated by you, Prince, with your own strength - I merely played a momentary role, nothing more. All of North Thracia is agreed on uniting under your rule, it seems. If a country that vast and wealthy were to join the fight against the Empire, my Liberation Army would have cause for celebration. Prince Leif, will you continue to fight alongside me? There's still much left to be done, but if we were to join forces, I know we could overcome any challenge in our way. If you would accept it, I offer you a vow of eternal friendship - to live and die as one, just as our fathers vowed before us.
Leif: I'm honored to accept your oath! After all we've been through, I think of you less as a cousin and more as an older brother. Nothing could make me happier than the idea of pooling our strength to create a brighter future for everyone!
Seliph: Then let us swear it upon this sword! We may have been born apart, but we shall die as one! As your friend, as your sworn brother, we shall join hands and deliver Jugdral from this evil! This I vow to you!
Leif: And I vow just the same to you - an undying oath, and may the stars themselves perish before it is broken!" —Leif and Seliph,Fire Emblem: Thracia 776 - ↑Fire Emblem History, Serenes Forest (archived by the Wayback Machine,Retrieved: March 24, 2012
