Say'ri

|
| “ | He tries, but we Resistance are a slippery lot. We strike hard and then vanish again into the dark of night. Even now rebels ride to the banner of dynasts across the continent. United, we could pose a veritable threat to Walhart. And so, for some time I have struggled to bring us together. | ” | — Say'ri, discussing her leadership of the Resistance withChrom |

Say'ri (pronounced /ˈseɪɹi/[key][1], Japanese:サイリSayri) is a character inFire Emblem Awakening. Along with her brother,Yen'fay, she is the princess of Chon'sin, a small nation on the western continent ofValm. She is forced to flee from her country after it is taken over byWalhart.
Fire Emblem Awakening
Role
Say'ri is the sister ofChon'sin's former ruler,Yen'fay. He betrayed Chon'sin to side withWalhart in order to protect her, but he never told her this. Say'ri was eventually hunted down by Walhart's forces, forcing her to flee from Chon'sin, until she was cornered in Valm Harbor. She was eventually rescued byChrom, leader of theShepherds. Say'ri brought them to the Mila Tree in order to getTiki's advice about theFire Emblem, but they were ambushed by a Valmese army led byCervantes. After defeating them, Tiki met with the group and tasked them to find the Emblem's missing gemstones.
Say'ri took the Shepherds to the Demon's Ingle, where they battled Yen'fay. If Say'ri battles Yen'fay, she will try to reason with him on why he betrayed Chon'sin, but he refuses to answer. Once he is defeated, Yen'fay will commend Say'ri for growing strong just before dying, much to Say'ri's grief.Excellus later explains to her that he only fought to protect her; having arranged a deal where Excellus would manipulate Walharts forces so Say'ri may yet live.
Say'ri accompanied the Shepherds in the rebellion against Walhart, and the subsequent battles againstGrima and theGrimleal.
InParalogue 21, an alternate version of Say'ri died, leaving that Outrealm's Yen'fay despondent. He traveled to the main Outrealm for unknown reasons. Upon seeing the alternate Yen'fay, Say'ri is overjoyed to see her brother again, but Yen'fay reminds her that while they are not true siblings, they can still be together.

Analysis
| This character analysis section may not be accurate to every player's experience. |
Say'ri is a level 1Swordmaster starting in Chapter 15 ofAwakening. Right away, she can immediately be put to work with her high stats that somewhat even surpass the enemies, with the only low ones being her magic, defense, and resistance. Her growths are not bad at all, with every growth being in 40% or above except magic. She starts with a B in swords, letting her useSilver Sword at base. She also hasMyrmidon's starting skills ofAvoid +10 for some extra dodging capabilities, andVantage for the ability to strike first no matter what if she is at 50% HP or below. The biggest problem is with her recruitment. She starts far from the players starting positions, only has aConcoction in her inventory, and she is surrounded by enemies, meaning she will get attacked until she is rescued. Her stats prevent her from dying in a couple rounds of combat, but her stat growths on Lunatic are not at pace with the enemies, giving them a better chance to kill her before the player can reach her.
Swordmaster may seem like a good class, but it is somewhat lacking inAwakening due to not having an inherent crit bonus like in other games, meaning that she could potentially be better off reclassing after she gets Swordmaster's skills.Astra gives a chance to deal five attacks at half damage, which does more than two at full damage if they all hit, andSwordfaire is a great skill for giving an extra five damage with swords. As with the previously mentioned problem with Swordmaster,Assassin could potentially be a better class for her with having bows for an extra weapon type and having better stat caps in more important areas. Assassin also trades Swordmaster's slight increase to her resistance growth for a slight increase to her skill growth. The first skill ofLethality is unreliable to activate with an at max 12% proc rate as a capped skill Assassin, and the second skill ofPass lets her move past enemies occupied squares, but it will be rendered worthless if she reclasses to both of her reclass options.
Say'ri has the option to reclass toPegasus Knight, which is by itself a great class for having seven unimpeded movement, with the ability to move on terrain infantry units can't. The skills ofSpeed +2 is not going to be useful very quickly, andRelief could stick around more with having aRenewal like effect, but only if she is not near allies within three spaces. Pegasus Knight is terrible on the growths front, only increasing her magic growth and reducing her strength growth. However, this class line holds the key for becoming a broken combat unit. Say'ri can promote toDark Flier, and at level 15, gets the bustedGaleforce skill, which lets her take another turn if she defeats an enemy, which there are plenty of scrub enemies throughout many maps to take advantage of this skill. She also at level 5 getsRally Movement, which is also quite good, since extra movement is always useful. However, Dark Flier also has major downsides despite the great skills. Dark Flier has worse promotion bonuses compared to Falcon Knight, and has growth decreases in strength, speed, and skill, and only increases magic, but it is still quite shaky at 35%. The +4 magic from promotion is nice, but she also starts at E tomes, severely hurting her damage output with them. Even so, Galeforce is still well worth it even with the downsides and the prospect of having to grind for it.
As a combat unit,Falcon Knight is much better with having better promotion bonuses, though she still keeps Pegasus Knight's reduction to her strength growth, and has another growth boost to magic, bringing it up to 30%. Falcon Knight also gets access to E staves, which is also not ideal, but much better than E tomes with being able to heal some HP regardless of her magic, rather than do little damage with tomes.Rally Speed as the level 5 skill is also another great rally skill to help other units reach doubling thresholds or to not get doubled, andLancefaire is very useful for an extra five damage with lances, and it even better with her starting at E lances either at Pegasus Knight, or directly reclassing, helping her with potential damage issues she might have for some time.
Wyvern Rider is even better as a combat class than the Pegasus Knight class tree. She getsStrength +2 as a starting skill, which also helps with her E axes, and at level 10 getsTantivy, which gives her some extra hit and avoid when not near allies within three spaces. She also gets increases to her HP, strength, and defense growths, but has her skill, speed, and resistance growths reduced.Wyvern Lord retains Wyvern Rider's growths, and gets more points of HP, strength, and defense, and gains access to lances. For skills,Quick Burn is not super great since maps inAwakening have to be taken slower sometimes, especially on Lunatic+, and she might end up not being able to utilizes the temporary bonuses to hit and avoid well. The last skill ofSwordbreaker is a very good skill, giving a huge boost of fifty extra hit and avoid against swords. The other promotion ofGriffon Rider instead gains more points of skill and speed, but does not gain an extra weapon. Griffon Rider also gets increases to her HP and strength growths, and her skill and speed growths are not hurt as much as Wyvern Rider/Lord.Deliverer gives her two extra movement when paired up, and Say'ri has access to another breaker skill, beingLancebreaker, giving +50 to hit and avoid when fighting lances.
Say'ri can only marryRobin, and thus only be a mother toMorgan. That said, she passes much better growths to HP, skill, and speed. Her class inheritance does not matter as Robin already gives full class inheritance to Morgan. This pairing could give Morgan access to Galeforce sooner if the player wishes to grind Say'ri rather than Morgan. However, the biggest problem actually stems from depriving another child from receiving Galeforce, asNoire,Kjelle, andNah would greatly appreciate the skill to increase their combat prowess. Thus, this pairing should be avoided unless there is a massacre of the player's units, and would like to get Morgan to help fill the ranks.

Personality
Say'ri is a calm, dignified princess of the Chon'sin dynasty, whose old-fashion speech and manners sharply contrast with those of the Ylisseans. She seeks to unite various rebel groups throughout Valm againstWalhart.
Say'ri held great contempt for her brother's actions in aligning withWalhart and aiding in his conquest ofValm. When she realized he had only done so after coming to an agreement withExcellus to protect her, her wrath evaporated, leaving only regret.
