Saul (Japanese:サウルSaul) is a playable character inFire Emblem: The Binding Blade. He first appears inChapter 5. Saul is a priest and member of the clergy of theElimine Church. He constantly flirts with women, to the point of consternation for his own bodyguard,Dorothy. Under BishopYoder's request, he and Dorothy joinRoy's army.

Role

Saul is first seen in a small village ofLycia betweenLaus andThria. Oblivious to the fight going on outside the village where he is, Saul prefers to busy himself with convincing a young woman to accompany him for dinner. However, to his displeasure, Dorothy arrives and the girl seizes the opportunity to flee. After a bit of banter, Dorothy informs him that the Lycian Army is nearby them and that PrincessGuinivere is with them. Delighted to hear the news, Saul orders Dorothy to hurry up and reach the army.

Once the bandits have been dealt with, Saul requests a meeting with Roy and Guinivere, surprising both of them. After complimenting the princess' beauty, he asks for the location of the Fire Emblem, and seeing Guinivere's reaction, he explains that the Elimine Church discovered almost immediately that it had disappeared at the same time she had leftBern. Therefore, the heads of the church sent him to discover the truth and, if necessary, to keep an eye on Bern's national treasure. To this end, he and Dorothy officially join Roy's army during theattack on Thria, and then they stay in the Lycian Army until the end of the war.

Once Bern is defeated and the war is over, Saul rejects all honors offered to him by the Elimine Church and dedicates his life to work as a missionary, becoming known by his peculiar behavior as well as his dedication to help people in need.

Analysis

Saul joins inChapter 6 ofThe Binding Blade and is automatically recruited along withDorothy from turn 1. It may be useful to trade him aHeal staff sinceMend staves are still relatively rare at that point in the game. Upon joining, Saul has the best bases and the higheststaff rank out of all the unpromoted healers, and because of this, he will most likely be the first unit to reach B and A-rank in staves. This means that Saul will be your premiere user of higher ranked staffs such asPhysic,Rescue,Sleep, and most importantlyWarp. AsElen,Clarine and other staff users beforeNiime andYoder will never reach A-rank staves on any moderately fast playthrough, as well as him having a highmagic base and growth, he will usually be your best warp user after promotion in the midgame. He also has a very highresistance growth ensuring that he will almost never get hit by enemy status staves, so it is recommended to usually deploy him at the bottom of your unit deployment order, as enemy staff users are more likely to target characters who are lower on your unit deployment order.

Upon promotion, Saul gains an additional staff rank, and a D-rank inlight magic. This is especially helpful considering thatBishops have an EXP bonus from combat inThe Binding Blade, meaning that he gain experience faster (as staves give little experience when used), further improving his warp range. He also has a strongspeed base and growth, allowing him to double reliably (especially on Normal mode) and even occasionally secure kills, despite the low might of light tomes.

Despite being a useful unit, Saul has his fair share of weaknesses. He has a low baseDefense and a low growth as well. This combined with his equally lowluck ensures that he will usually die in 1 or 2 hits against physical units and be susceptible to low percent crits against enemy magic users. He also might not reach level 10 by the time you get the firstGuiding Ring inChapter 8, not to mention that other magic users such asLugh could also make great use of said promotion item and some might even be at the level necessary to promote. Guiding Rings are fairly scarce inThe Binding Blade (only 2 before thesecret shop inChapter 16). He may also be outclassed by Clarine andCecilia in utility thanks to their mounts (though they likely will not have the staff rank), while Niime and Yoder will usually have higher magic than Saul when they join, making both of them better warp users. Even so, Saul will be useful even during the lategame chapters and can still be deployed alongside your other magic users.

Overall, Saul is a solid unit who will be available during the hardest parts ofThe Binding Blade and will usually contribute well during the later chapters as well.

Two versions of Saul are present inHeroes. Saul was first made available between the period of May 20, 2021 through June 18, 2021 in a special minister variation as part of the summoning event surrounding the launch of theBridal Grace update. A normal variation was added in the New Heroes & Mythic Heiðr update, and was first available to summon from June 8, 2023.

Personality

Saul's main characteristic is his shameless flirting with women, using the pretense of sermons. This usually backfires on him, as the women are either uncomfortable with him^[2] or unaware of his true intentions.^[3]Elen even interprets his actions as Saul's way to show how accepting the Elimine Church is. The only woman he has not attempted to woo is his bodyguard, Dorothy, who is very aware of his behavior. Yet he is a true priest at heart; he offers some advice toIgrene, explaining to her why the gods had not answered her prayers,^[4] and decides to stay by Roy's side to protect him, afterYoder frees him of his job.^[5]

Saul is a clever man, able of seeing through traps and people's actions.^[6] This is also seen in his very unorthodox tactics, such as giving discounts for people who go to church, or clinging to a man to scare him off.^[7]
