Saizo the Fifth, more commonly referred to as simplySaizo (Japanese:サイゾウSaizou), is a character inFire Emblem Fates. He is a ninja, and an underling under direct command ofRyoma. His personality contrasts his brother; while Kaze is calm, Saizo is hot-blooded and quick to become incensed.

Biography

One of Ryoma's personal retainers and the older twin brother of Kaze, Saizo is a Hoshidan Ninja and is the fifth to carry the Saizo family name.

Analysis

Saizo is the secondNinja inBirthright andRevelation. He has good growths in all areas except resistance, but he also has a massive 80% skill growth. Ninja allows him to use shurikens/daggers to attack enemies adjacent to him, and enemies who are two spaces away from him, and with their debuffs, Saizo can become a very useful utility unit.

InBirthright, due to the limited speed of enemy units, even though Saizo only has eleven base speed when he joins in Chapter 7, he is still able to steadily double enemies with his high speed growth. Even if he starts to fail to outspeed enemies, extra speed is in no short supply inBirthright thanks to tonics, meals, and pair-ups. However, due to Saizo's average growth, it's possible for Saizo to underperform if you have bad luck with the RNG, and this should be noted. However, a unit that can attack from 1-2 range will never lose its utility.

InRevelation, Saizo performs a bit worse. He joins 4 chapters later thanBirthright, but is only 2 levels stronger. However, Saizo can easily bridge this gap by relying on his great growths. He's also still in one of the best enemy phase classes in the game, and can contribute well throughout the game if given investment. Notably, his new friendship support withLaslow allows him access to theMercenary class, which grants himStrong Riposte andSol to greatly improve his enemy phase, andAxebreaker andShurikenbreaker for general combat.

As a Ninja, he starts withLocktouch, and at level 10, he getsPoison Strike. The former allows him to open doors and obtain the treasures in treasure chests, which is a skill that he will likely use frequently. The latter allows him to easily inflict additional damage on enemies with high defense or HP, and in combination with his personal skill, he can further weaken enemies within its range. His main promotion option isMaster Ninja, giving more points of skill, speed, and resistance, access to swords, and a slight increase to his resistance growth. Although the first skill,Lethality, can instantly kill enemies, its low proc rate severely hampers its practicality. However, the five damage points provided by the second skill,Shurikenfaire, is very useful, especially considering that shurikens are relatively weak. His other promotion option isMechanist, which gives more points of HP, strength, defense, and movement, and access to bows/yumi for a harder hitting ranged option than shurikens. It also gives increases to his HP, strength, and luck growths, and reductions to his skill and speed growths. AlthoughGolembane will generally be rarely used, theReplicate skill obtained at level 15 is a skill worth using for Saizo to make a clone of himself for double the firepower, though he will be more susceptible to dying since both him and the clone share a health bar, so keep that in mind.

As for reclassing, he can obtainDuelist's Blow andVantage fromSamurai,Astra andSwordfaire fromSwordmaster, andSeal Strength andLife and Death from Master of Arms. These are all very practical skills and several are worth pursuing, especially Swordfaire and Life and Death for extra damage. In short, if Saizo is never reclassed, he can still perform well regardless.

Saizo also has a notably highmagic growth for a physical unit, allowing him to make good use of theFlame Shuriken to deal damage to enemies with lowerresistance. Although another dedicated magic shuriken user likeFelicia may make better use of it, Saizo will be able to deal good damage using it if it's put into his inventory.

Saizo is one of Ryoma's retainers and Kaze's brother. However, Saizo and his brother have completely different personalities. Saizo is cold-blooded and irritable, and is very doubtful, monitoring Corrin and others for the safety of the royal family. Nevertheless, he does have a gentle side; for example, he gets along quite well with Mozu, connecting with her over their shared experiences with farm work.

Saizo: Angry Ninja
Here’s Saizo, a master ninja from Hoshido who’s known for his fiery technique! He’s a loyal retainer to Ryoma who supports his master from the shadows.	Saizo belongs to a bloodline of elite ninja. In fact, he’s the fifth to bear the family name.	Saizo also has a twin brother, Kaze. The two are rather different from each other, though. Saizo is hot-tempered and can be rather severe, while Kaze keeps a cool head.	Working alongside his fellow ninja Kagero, Saizo serves at Ryoma’s beck and call. I’m sure he’ll be a great aid to us in Askr too—he seems like the type who might deal with threats to the kingdom before we even know about them!

We’ve got a very special shinobi making an appearance at the ninja festival—Saizo’s here from Hoshido to show us all how it’s done!	Saizo normally dresses in stealthy attire, but he’s going all out with his festival fashion. Check out the fluffy tail and fox-themed shoulder guard he’s wearing!
