TheSage (Japanese:賢者Sage) is anadvanced magicalclass which debuted inFire Emblem Gaiden. It is the primarypromoted form of theMage class, occupying that role sinceGenealogy of the Holy War. Sages wield offensive magic, primarily focusing onanima magic anditsthreesubtypes, almost always with the addition ofstaves. The class is split into three magic type-specific variants inFire Emblem: Radiant Dawn—theFire Sage,Wind Sage andThunder Sage—as well as two character-specific variants, theLight Sage andDark Sage, exclusive toMicaiah andPelleas respectively.

In contrast to the healing proficiency of theBishop and the defensive capabilities of theDruid/Sorcerer, the Sage excels at pure magical offense, possessing highmagical power, skill andspeed. They typically have access to a relatively broad spectrum of offensive options, granting them further versatility. Their main advantage is their ability to take advantage of the lowresistance of physically-oriented enemies, particularly slower ones likeGenerals, but in turn they themselves are vulnerable to physical attack as a result of their below-averagedefense.

Beginning with its introduction inGaiden and in almost every game since, the Sage changes class from theMage, replacing theBishop's original role as being the advanced form of the Mage; the only exception isGenealogy of the Holy War, in which it instead promotes from theBard andShaman. InThracia 776, three classes can promote to Sage: Mage, Bard, andCleric. InThe Sacred Stones, the Sage is a promotion option for Mages,Monks andPriests; inAwakening, it is a promotion option for Mages, Priests and Clerics.
