TheRoyal Sword (Japanese:王家の剣Royal Family's Sword) is asword that was introduced inFire Emblem Gaiden. It is the first ofAlm's twopersonal weapons inGaiden and its remake,Echoes: Shadows of Valentia, the second beingFalchion. It is moderately powerful, very accurate, and has a respectable critical rate. It also allows the holder to regain 5HP each turn, even if they can not use it as a weapon. InShadows of Valentia, it also teaches Alm his exclusivecombat arts,Double Lion andScendscale, as well as the more commonSubdue.
History
The Royal Sword was a gift from theRigelian Empire, given to theZofian royal family at some time in the past as a symbol of friendship between the two nations. According to legends, only individuals who possess royal blood are able to use it, and to anyone else it is extremely heavy to the point of being impossible to lift.[1]
However, in the year 401 it was stolen byDesaix as he fled Zofia Castle following his defeat by theDeliverance.[2] Desaix took it to his fortress, and after he was defeated there as well,Alm,Tobin, andLukas found the sword in its chest. After a failed attempt by Tobin to pick it up, Alm successfully lifted it with ease. At Lukas's advice, Alm adopted the blade as his own despite his misgivings about the legend and what it implied about him.[1]

Alm: You find something, Tobin?
Tobin: I sure did. Feast your eyes on this baby! You think this is the treasure Desaix stole from Zofia Castle?
Alm: Well...it certainly looks important. Should we open it?
Tobin: Whooooooa! Check the sword! That is one impressive piece of hardware! I'm just gonna—
Tobin: Hng...! Whu... Huh? This thing weighs a ton! It won't...budge...
Lukas: This must be the Royal Sword of Zofia.
Alm: What's that?
Lukas: Long ago, Rigel presented this sword to Zofia as a symbol of friendship. It's a very special treasure—only one of royal blood can lift it.
Alm: Hmm... Interesting. Here, Tobin—let me have a go at it.
Tobin: You?! Pfft, please. If I can't lift it, there's no way that— Huh?!
Alm: Sometimes I don't get you, Tobin. This thing's light as a feather. Was this all some kind of jape? Who put you up to this?
Tobin: But...but it wasn't a jape! Zero japes! I thought my arms would snap just trying to lift it!
Alm: Hmm. But that means...
Lukas: By the gods... You can wield the Royal Sword! ...Hmm, what DOES that mean? Alm, are you...
Alm: ...... O-oh, come on. It's just some legend. You don't actually BELIEVE it, right? I'm sure everyone can use this thing! Well, except Tobin. And...um... Look, I'm sure the Zofian royals made up a story to keep folks from nicking it.
Lukas: ...Well, that didn't exactly work out now, did it? But perhaps you're right. Tales do have a habit of getting taller with time. Either way, it seems clear the blade belongs with you.
Alm: Are you sure? I mean, we could have other people give it a shot.
Lukas: It wouldn't work. You alone seem able to tame this legend. And we wouldn't want to see so fine a treasure wasted, would we? Take it.
Alm: Well...all right..." —Tobin,Alm, andLukas,Fire Emblem Echoes: Shadows of Valentia - ↑"That mongrel Desaix stole the royal sword when he turned tail and ran. The Rigelian imperial household gave us that sword as a sign of friendship. I don't know what use Desaix has for it. Oh, it's a powerful sword, and no lie... but only in the hands of the right wielder. And that wielder isn't him!" — A soldier in Zofia Castle,Fire Emblem Echoes: Shadows of Valentia
