He sought to assist Bern's PrincessGuinivere in finding a peaceful resolution to the war, to prevent KingZephiel's ambitions of exterminatinghumans and returningElibe to the rule ofdragons.

Biography

Early life

Roy andLilina at age ten.

Roy was born in theyear 985, five years after his father Eliwood defeatedNergal at the Dragon's Gate; his mother is not canonically identified, but in the gameplay ofThe Blazing Blade she can potentially beLyn,Ninian orFiora. During his upbringing, he waswet-nursed by the Pheraen knightRebecca, and her sonWolt is considered hismilk brother. At the age of ten, he and Eliwood traveled toOstia to meet withHector, Eliwood's old friend, and Roy was there introduced to Hector's daughterLilina, and the two became close friends.

The Disturbance of Bern

Five years afterward, at the onset of theDisturbance of Bern, Roy was inOstia studying under the tutelage ofCecilia, the Mage General ofEtruria. During his studies, he was summoned home by Eliwood, who had fallen ill while Lilina was visiting; when he arrived back in Pherae, the region was under siege by a bandit mob led byDamas, with Eliwood and Lilina barricaded inside the castle. With the assistance of his retinue of Pheraen knights, Roy subdued the bandits and reclaimed Pherae. Once there, he was tasked with leading the Pheraen army to join with the rest of the Lycian armies to oppose Bern's impending threat, owing to Eliwood being too ill to do it himself.

Before heading toAraphen to join with the rest of the armies, on Eliwood's instruction Roy headed to the Lycia/Bern border to meet with a mercenary band led byDieck, hired by Eliwood to bolster Roy's ranks. During this meeting, he was approached byElen, who implored him to save her mistress from captivity in the nearby Bern fortress. Roy challenged the Bern unit stationed at the castle and its masterRuud and won, rescuing the noblewoman. The noblewoman revealed to Roy her identity asGuinivere, the princess of Bern and younger sister of KingZephiel. Guinivere had fled Bern in the hopes of meeting a Lycian representative in a bid to bring the war to a peaceful end. Roy agreed to assist her in this goal and allowed her to join his army.

En route to Araphen, news reached Roy that Araphen had already been attacked by a Bern army led byBrunnya andNarcian, decimating the League's army. By the time he arrived, the bulk of Bern's army had already pulled out, leaving an occupational guard in Araphen; Roy defeated the occupation force, only to find a severely woundedHector. Even a warrior of Hector's talent had been overwhelmed by the raw power ofdragons, Bern's secret weapon, and with his last words Hector warned Roy of the dragons in Bern's service and entrusted him with the leadership of the Lycian army in his stead, then died from his wounds.

Roy's next destination was Ostia, to recover a weapon capable of fighting dragons and protect Lilina. On his way, he was forced to fight against traitorous Lycian forces who sought an alliance with Bern in light of the imminent collapse of the League. After defeating LordErik ofLaus and theThrian advisorWagner, Roy arrived in Ostia only to find it in the midst of a coup d'etat. A rebellion led by the Ostian knightsDebias andLegance had seized control of Ostia, allied with Bern and taken Lilina hostage, opposed only by anIlian mercenary band under Hector's employ. With the assistance of the Ilian mercenaries –Zelot,Trec andNoah – Roy challenged the rebellion and, for the first time in the city's history, successfully invaded Castle Ostia to defeat Legance. If Lilina is successfully rescued, she showed Roy the hiding place ofDurandal, a sword once used by Roy's father. His victory was short-lived, however, with the arrival of a Bern unit headed by Narcian, saved at the last minute only by the arrival of Cecilia andPerceval from Etruria, who placed Lycia under Etrurian protection and drove Narcian out.

The Western Isles expedition

The Etrurian assistance came with a cost, with the Lycian army – now headed by Roy – indebted to them for their protection. On Etruria's orders, Roy's army was sent away from Lycia to theWestern Isles, an Etrurian colony, to fight the encroaching bandit infestation. Cecilia informed him that the decision to deploy Roy came not from the Etrurian king or military, but from the Isles' governorArcardo and royal advisorRoartz, without anyone else's involvement; Guinivere was left in Cecilia's care during Roy's campaign. While initially determined to complete his set task as quickly as possible, as he progressed Roy instead learned of the abuse and enslavement of the people of the Isles at the hands of corrupt Etrurian governors, including Arcardo, all to fuel the Etrurian mining industry in the region. Roy elected to lead the army on a different mission in the Isles: to defeat the Etrurian occupation and free its people, earning the support and aid of mercenaries and the resistance movement led byEchidna along the way, and receiving another advisor:Elffin of the resistance. At the Isles' capital, Juteaux, Roy's army fought a Bernese unit as Arcardo fled the Isles, defeating a dragon left behind to defend the capital by the Bernese commanderFlaer.

Upon capturing Juteaux, Roy received news that a coup d'état had broken out in Etruria, under the leadership of Roartz and Arcardo. Of the Etrurian army, only Cecilia has escaped being forced to serve the Revolutionaries and even she was now cornered with Guinivere in a castle inMissur. When Roy arrived to rescue her, she was confronting King Zephiel himself, who quickly overpowered and defeated her, seizing her castle for himself and finding Guinivere. After Zephiel's departure, Guinivere was to be taken back to Bern byMelady, her bodyguard, but instead the two rejoined Roy's army at Guinivere's insistence. Roy led his army to recapture the castle and save Cecilia, defeating its defender Flaer; at the castle after the battle, he found Cecilia andSophia, who had been tending to Cecilia's injuries. On Sophia's advice, Roy led his army into theNabata desert to findArcadia, which was under attack by Bern. Afterward, Roy led a march onAquileia, the Etrurian capital, and defeated Bern's GeneralNarcian and freed Etruria from the Revolutionaries' grasp with the assistance of theElimine Church's influence.

Etrurian general

Roy receiving theBinding Blade.

The collapse of their coup d'état forced Roartz and Arcardo to flee Etruria to find shelter with Bern's army. With King Mordred and the three Etrurian generals now in support of him, the Lycian and Etrurian armies merged into the single "Etrurian Army" with Roy as its commander. The united army's first mission was to liberateIlia andSacae, other nations already conquered by Bern. During the campaign, Roy confronted Roartz and Arcardo – now reluctantly commanding small Bern armies – and challenged traitorous forces within both nations, the Djute tribe of Sacae and a faction of Ilian mercenaries; along the way, Guinivere related to him stories of Zephiel's history, his conflict with their fatherDesmond and how those events ultimately twisted him into deep-seated distrust of mankind.

With the rest of Elibe free, all that remained was Bern itself. Roy led the Etrurian army in an attack on theShrine of Seals, defeatingMurdock andGalle of theWyvern Generals. There, he used theFire Emblem entrusted to him by Guinivere to unlock theBinding Blade, and was "chosen" by the blade as its new wielder to finish the war. With the Binding Blade in hand, the Etrurian army stormed the Bern palace, defended by Zephiel himself. Upon unlocking the throne room with the Fire Emblem, Roy confronted Zephiel, making one last bid to reason with Zephiel and convince him to end the war. His efforts at negotiation proved useless with Zephiel determined to stay his course, and in a final battle Zephiel was defeated by Roy and the Etrurian army.

When all the legendary weapons of Elibe came together in the Bern throne room after Zephiel's defeat, Zephiel's former sword,Eckesachs, reacted to their presence in Roy's army and emitted a light beam pointing to theDragon Sanctuary, the last bastion of Bern's army and the hiding place of the Demon Dragon,Idunn. Roy led a final charge on the Dragon Sanctuary, first defeating the final Wyvern General,Brunnya, then invading its interior and learning the true history ofthe Scouring fromJahn, the sole surviving trueManakete. Between Jahn's tale and the concerns ofFae, Roy realized he could not kill Idunn; instead, Hartmut's sword in hand, he resolved to restore Idunn's lost heart.

With the war over at last, Roy attended the coronation of Guinivere as the new Queen of Bern, then returned to Pherae to rebuild the war-ravaged region, and eventually succeds his father as the new Marquess Pherae. However, if Lilina is killed in battle, Pherae remains the greatest power of Lycia and therefore, Roy becomes the new marquess and leader of the entire Lycian League.[citation needed]

If he reaches an A support withShanna,Sue,Larum,Cecilia, orSophia while any of them survived, he married her and the couple rules together over Pherae as the Marquess and Marchioness. If he reaches an A support withLilina and the true ending is reached, an alternate version of the crowning ceremony scene will play and have the two discuss in a room as to what the two will do now that the war has ended, as well as making comments regardingGuinivere herself. And some time after that, the two marry, with Roy becoming the consort King of Lycia.

Analysis

This character analysis section may not be accurate to every player's experience.

Roy is the main character ofFire Emblem: The Binding Blade. He will be force deployed in every chapter, and his death means an instant Game Over.

Roy is not the best unit right off the bat:Lance,Alen, andMarcus are more durable and have higher mobility. Roy does have a D rank in swords, which is more than Alen and Lance have, but he cannot use it to his advantage: theArmorslayer is a D rank sword obtainable in Chapter 2, but it's too heavy for him to wield without significantly slowing him down due to his poor constitution. Also, in Chapter 2,Dieck joins the army. Dieck is more proficient with swords and has higher stats and better constitution, generally outclassing him. Roy's growths are decent for the game's standards, including a surprising 30% resistance growth and above average growths in HP, skill and luck, but apart from that, they are not outstanding either.

TheRapier is Roy's exclusive sword, effective against cavalry and armored units (exceptNomads,Troubadours and their respective promotions), which grants Roy a niche. Chapters 3 and 4 are filled with armored and mounted units, and later chapters also tend to have several suitable targets for the weapon's attacks. Using the Rapier sparingly is unnecessary; another Rapier is inside a chest in Chapter 7. The downside is that Roy can only use swords throughout the game. While the Rapier is useful in the first half of the game, it is less useful later on when enemies begin wielding lances more often, and cavaliers and armored units usually use lances, not to mention that it has low might, only differing from an Iron Sword due to its +10 critical bonus, which is useful but not always reliable, meaning that after a few chapters, it is often better to leave them to others.

While Roy can somewhat hold his own during Normal Mode, where he shines more in early game, Hard Mode is particularly problematic for him due to his low base stats and the high quality of enemies. Due to this, he's not safe from enemies in the early game of Hard Mode, as he can barely take a hit from axe-wielders. Although he has a weapon triangle advantage against them for bonus avoid, fighting them still presents a risk because of axes' high might. Roy's damage output is also lacking; he will not be fast enough to double enemies for a while, as his base speed of 7 is just low enough to prevent him from doubling reliably, and the Rapier and Iron Sword both have a low might of 5. Roy's base strength is only 5, resulting in 10 damage per hit—it takes him a long time to kill even one enemy, assuming he does not die in the process. While you could get around this by using stronger weapons, more powerful early game swords also weigh more, hindering his speed and ability to dodge. Roy has a flimsy constitution of 6, so heavier weapons really weigh him down, to the point of getting him doubled by some enemies. Since he barely survives one hit from most foes, he will not survive two. Therefore, if Roy wants to deal more damage, he also risks death if the enemy has a chance to counterattack. With a defense growth of only 25%, combat will not be any less risky for Roy later on.

Even with a lot of investment and experience, Roy will run into a wall after the Western Isles. Chapter 13 is a huge change of pace, especially in Hard Mode, as Roy will have a tough time keeping up with it. He will reach level 20 sooner or later if used frequently in combat, but he cannot be promoted until Chapter 21. This limits Roy's growth potential and usefulness, as he could really use some midgame promotion bonuses. He cannot promote until late in the game, so he is stuck as a 5-move unpromoted unit with underwhelming stats. The player can use stat boosters on Roy, but they're competitive resources that don't transform him into a powerful unit by themselves. He does make good use of an Angelic Robe, however, as it prevents him from dying against siege tomes, and makes him less of a liability in general. Even on Normal Mode, midgame is a hard part for Roy overall, as even when he reaches level 20, he can still have some trouble in pulling his weight by himself.

After the challenging start ofThe Binding Blade Hard Mode, Roy's offense is still lacking. He might have a chance against slow or axe-wielding units likePirates orBrigands, fighting better against them. However, he will struggle against faster and/or stronger enemies likeSwordmasters, Nomad Troopers, andWyvern Riders due to them either having 2-range options, weapon triangle advantage over him, more speed or a combination of them, especially since his lacking constitution makes him unfit to handle heavier weapons, affecting his speed, accuracy and avoidance. He also cannot wieldDurandal while unpromoted because his sword rank caps at A. A Roy who has reached level 20 is generally better off avoiding combat, unless he has to get out of a jam. Roy can also be left untrained, since he does not contribute much to the army throughout the game, but this will be a huge problem in endgame.

Since Roy has no good 2-range options (with his only 1–2 range option beingLight Brands, which are scarcely available and only deal 10 damage at 2-range), he will suffer in the Sacae route. Those chapters have plenty of Nomads and Nomadic Troopers that can attack him from a distance and will often have the speed to double him. Roy will never be able to counterattack – and since his durability is lacking, getting worn down by ranged enemies is dangerous for him, leaving him in situations when he can be easily killed if he's not protected. While not as bad as the Sacae route, the Ilia route is also hard for him, but for different reasons: the obstacles that Roy has to deal in the Ilia route include lance-wieldingPegasus Knights with weapon triangle advantage over him, and while they have such low constitution that they are noticeably weighened down by their lances, fighting them will still be risky because of the weapon triangle advantage, and on Hard Mode, he may be at risk of getting doubled by them if his speed isn't high enough. It also has plenty of difficult terrain in mountains or rivers that Roy has trouble navigating on his own.

Roy's job for most of the game is to seize thrones. Even then, his low movement of 5 spaces will make it difficult for him to reach the objective by himself. He often needs help getting to the finish line from mounted or flying units. This is important because all sidequests in the game (except those for Durandal and Aureola) need a map to be completed within a time frame. Roy is not good at reaching the seize point by himself, so using other units to bring him there faster is advisable.

When Roy gets his promotion at the end of Chapter 21 or Chapter 21x, he will be strong enough to hold his own in combat unless he has not been trained before then. Roy's promotion gives him significant stat bonuses across the board, and he gets a sword rank bonus that lets him wield most swords. With theBinding Blade, he can attack at 1–2 range as well as fightManaketes and kill them reliably. With a +2 bonus in constitution after promotion, he will also have just enough constitution to wield the Binding Blade without losing speed. The downside is that the promotion comes late. By the time Roy gets it, the player will have trained more capable combat units to use Divine Weapons. He also does not gain access to any new weapon types, limiting his reliable ranged options outside of the aforementioned Binding Blade and still does not give him control over the weapon triangle. Roy's promotion makes him a decent unit at worst, but does not make him exceptional.

Roy cannot do much by himself. His combat is mostly lacking on Hard Mode, and he cannot promote until the lategame. It is easy to lose him if the player is not careful, and while he can typically survive a single hit, surviving two can be a tall order. At the very least, his promotion makes him a decent unit. However, it only increases his movement by 1, so he still falls behind compared to other units. Many players avoid using Roy because of his limitations and only ever use him for seizing thrones, leaving all other objectives to different, more capable units, though this also makes the endgame harder.

In terms of elemental affinities, Roy has the fire affinity, one of the best of the game; it boosts his and his partner's attack, accuracy, avoid and critical, all bonuses that, aside from accuracy, he and other characters might need. Alen is an excellent support, as both of them have the fire affinity, granting both of them a large bonus in attack, dodge and critical.Lilina is also a very good support and the easisest to get for Roy due to both having the same movement and gaining most support points per turn, as her light affinity has the same bonuses apart from avoid, in exchange for a bonus in defense, something that he might need during combat. BothMarcus andWolt have the Ice affinity, which grants bonuses in hit, avoid and dodge, increasing his accuracy and heavily decreasing enemy's hit rate due toFire Emblem: The Binding Blade being infamous for the lowest hit rates. BothSue andShanna have the wind affinity, which grants almost same bonuses as the Ice affinity, with the difference that the crit is increased instead of avoid.Cecilia andLance both have the anima affinity, which gives bonuses in attack, defense, avoid and dodge, allowing him to deal more critical hits and increasing his survivability.Larum has the Thunder affinity, which increases avoid, crit and dodge, allowing Roy to dodge attacks easier. Finally,Sophia's affinity is dark, which grants bonus accuracy, avoid, critical and dodge.

Fire Emblem: The Blazing Blade

Role

Roy appears briefly in the extended epilogue ofThe Blazing Blade, which takes place five years before the events ofThe Binding Blade; here, his first meeting with Lilina is depicted. This epilogue is not present in the European version of the game. He is also mentioned by name in Eliwood's A-rank endings withNinian,Lyn andFiora and referenced together with Lilina in his supports with Hector[5].

Fire Emblem Awakening

Fire Emblem Heroes

Main article:Roy/Heroes

There are five different variations of Roy available inHeroes. In addition,Ike: Zealous Inheritors features him as a Harmonized Hero alongsideIke.

Personality

Roy is a competent leader and warrior. Despite his young age, he manages to lead an ever growing army and gain people's trust wherever he goes. He is even often very cunning, managing to "fool" an apparent "vassal" into exposing himself.[6]. Idealistic and loyal, he is committed to protect those in need and fight for the right causes, even if this means fighting against old bonds. He is also understanding of people's desires and reasons, and feels that a victory obtained by sacrificing people is not a true victory.[7] Although his knights try to keep him away from the front lines, Roy refuses to, stating that the only way he can understand people and fight for them is to experience their hardships.[8]

Through Lilina and Wolt's conversations about Roy, though, a different side of Roy can be shown. According to Lilina, Roy is somewhat clumsy.[9] He tends to doubt his competence,[8] heavily relying in Marcus and Merlinus' experience and support, and from what it is seen in Shanna's supports, he has trouble keeping himself in good spirits.[10]

Roy values friendship and family greatly. He does not particularly care about the social status of others, and in particular he viewsWolt as a brother and not as a vassal.[11] He maintains a close relationship with Cecilia, his former teacher, and Lilina, his childhood friend, but is also friendly towards new people, such as Sue and Sophia. He is also not very good at handling women[12], and he is especially flustered by Larum's forwardness.[13]. Though Lilina has romantic feelings for Roy[14], this is still unnoticed by him[15] unless he decides to spend the rest of his time with her.[16].

Engage

Main article:Roy/Bond conversations

As anEmblem, Roy does not have any support conversations. However, upon reaching bond level 5, 10, and 20 with any character, he has short bond conversations with them instead, which unlock the next bond level. Increasing bond level provides a variety of bonuses, such as raising the stat bonus Roy provides to synchronized units, inheriting weapon proficiencies, unlocking new sync skills and engage weapons, or extending the duration of each engagement.

Endings

Roy, Young Lion
Short: Worked to rebuild Pherae.

Long: Roy returned home to rebuild the lands in Lycia that were ravaged by the war. He was always popular with the people and was well-remembered long after his tenure as Marquess Pherae.

Super Smash Bros. series

Main article:Roy/Super Smash Bros. series

Roy is a recurring playable character in Nintendo'sSuper Smash Bros. fighting game series. He first joined the series inSuper Smash Bros. Melee for Nintendo GameCube and, along withMarth, was one of theFire Emblem series' first representatives in the games. He did not return for the sequel,Super Smash Bros. Brawl likely due to time constraints, but was reintroduced as adownloadable character inSuper Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS andWii U and as an unlockable inSuper Smash Bros. Ultimate.

Roy is amoveset clone of Marth, meaning that he was created by reusing Marth's animations and assets with several modifications. He is designed as a sort of inverted take on Marth: while Marth's attacksare strongest when landed at the tip of his sword, the strongest point of Roy'sBinding Blade is the base of the blade at its hilt (inSuper Smash Bros. Melee, it is instead the very center of the blade). He has lower jump height and faster falling speed, and in all games except forMelee, he also has faster running and air speed. This makes him an overall speedier fighter that is more capable while grounded, but also significantly less versatile in the air with a weaker recovery. While Marth's play revolves around kiting around his foes, properly spacing him at a certain distance from them in order to land his very powerful "tippers", Roy's different sweet spot and stats makes him better suited to an aggressive close-quarters, rushdown style of play. His moveset was partially reworked inSuper Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS andWii U to separate him from Marth with new and unique attacks, as well as grant him faster speed to help assist in his rushdown strategy, but the majority of his attacks are still taken from Marth.

Fire Emblem Characters: The Binding Blade and The Blazing Blade

Roy's artwork fromThe Binding Blade is featured in a file in theFire Emblem Characters book, alongside details regarding himself and his role in the game's story. He is the first character listed in this book. His younger self fromThe Blazing Blade is not given a file.

Fire Emblem Character File 001: Roy
Gender: MaleEstimated Age: 15Title: Young LionOrigin:Lycia
Status: Leader of the Pheraen ArmyWeapon:Sword (Exclusive:Rapier,Binding Blade)

The young leader who carries the next generation of Lycia on his shoulders.

The son ofEliwood, who is the head ofPherae, a kingdom in the eastern area of the Lycian League. WhenBern invaded, he took the place of his sickly father as leader of the Pherae Army. Although young, he lead the army with excellent judgement and leadership to quell the rebellion against Pherae. Afterwards, he completely devoted himself to the restoration of Lycia.

Roy lacks combat experience, as he is still young. He leads the Pherae army against the rebellion and succeeds despite that, using nothing more than his sword and arm. Not only did he surprass a leader's quick thinking and judgement, but also skill with a sword arm.

Roy's way of thinking is neither like a noble or soldier. He gives hope and empathy to not just nobles or soldiers, but to everyone alike. With that skill as a driving force, Roy was able to gather talent from all over and build up a great army.

Trivia

Roy's old design featured in a Japanese magazine.
  • Roy andClaude are the onlyFire Emblem series main characters whose fathers survive the entire course of their starring game. In contrast, all other main characters either witness their father's death or their father is already dead before the game begins.
  • Roy andLeif are the youngest main characters in the series; in theirmaingames, both of them are fifteen years old. In the Japanese version ofThe Blazing Blade,Lyn is also fifteen in Lyn's tale, but the western versions changed this to eighteen.
  • Roy is the onlyFire Emblem character to appear in non-Fire Emblem media before his ownFire Emblem game debuted, asSuper Smash Bros. Melee was released four months prior toThe Binding Blade.
  • Atan earlier stage in the development ofThe Binding Blade, Roy had a significantly different and more youthful design. Although his current design replaced this one by the timeSuper Smash Bros. Melee was released, remnants of the old design can still be seen in his battle and map sprites in the finished version ofThe Binding Blade, both of which sport his old design's large and distinct hair style. His design change was decided in August of 2001.[18]
  • InSuper Smash Bros. Melee, unlike every other character, Roy's files and debug menu listings do not reference him specifically: he is instead referred to generically as "EMBLEM" in many places, most prominently the debug menu[19] and his texture files refer to him with the two-letter codename "Fe", an obvious abbreviation of "Fire Emblem".[20] This suggests that Roy was chosen as the Marth clone relatively late in development.
  • One of Brave Roy's quotes inFire Emblem Heroes, "Roy's our boy!" could be a reference to his crowd cheer in theSuper Smash Bros. series.

Hector: If that is my future I'm not sure I like it. [...] The girl that would be my daughter... She gets taken away by this boy that appears later. ...A boy with red hair! Yes, it was red, I'm sure of it.
Eliwood: Don't get ahead of yourself! There are plenty of people with red hair...
