Promotion stat gains

InMystery of the Emblem, promotion gains for HP and weapon level consist of giving the character as many points as necessary—thex value shown in the table—to reach the promoted class's base value. If the character's value for one of those two stats is higher than their promoted class's base value, they will not receive any bonus in that stat.

Analysis

Roderick joins in chapter 1 of book 2 ofMystery of the Emblem. He has the worst base stats of the three startingCavaliers, falling behind in strength, speed, defense, and weapon level. This isn't enough to make him much worse than the other two, but it will make him trail behind the other two, especially as his growth rates are not especially impressive compared to his competition. He also has the lowest starting level, meaning he needs more experience than the other two to reach promotion, which is especially pressing for Cavaliers as a Knight Crest is available as soon aschapter 3. Cavalier is also not a class that will be good for every chapter, as chapters 9 through 14 are hostile to mounted units and only a handful of chapters beyond then are especially good for mounted units.

Analysis

Roderick is one of three early game Cavaliers, alongside Luke and Cecil. Roderick’s base stats are either on par with or worse than Luke’s, with the exception of +1 base Luck. Luke has higher growth rates in HP and Strength, while Roderick has a higher Skill, Speed, and Luck growth. Roderick has a D rank in Lances and an E rank in Swords, compared to Luke’s E rank in Lances and D rank in Swords. Due to the high number of competent Lance users in the early game (includingArran,Catria,Palla, and so on), Luke’s niche of a higher Sword tier is more valuable. Overall, while Luke certainly is better than Roderick, the advantages Luke has over Roderick are not numerous or insurmountable. There is nothing stopping the player from simply using both. While plainly worse than Luke, Roderick compares more favorably to Cecil, who joins later in the Prologue and has serious struggles with durability.

Despite his middling status among the three early Cavaliers, Roderick is still quite a useful and viable unit. His high availability and his chance to score a lot of experience in the Prologue set him up for long term success. Those looking to invest in Roderick likely want to have him end up as a Horseman, or otherwise as a Berserker or Dracoknight. A niche he shares with Luke is good mutual supports with other early game units who scale well into the late game; specifically Kris, Luke, and Ryan.

Personality

Having to grow up fast after his mother's death to care for his sisters^[1], Roderick has become skilled at several motherly tasks such as cooking and sewing.^[2] He eventually joined the Altean Knights in order to better provide food for his family, rather than honor or personal glory.^[3] There he became a member of the 7th Platoon and met Luke, who would annoy him at first, but over time would become close friends during the War of Heroes.^[4]He also meets Cecil during the war, developing a crush on her.^[5] The three would dutifully serve Marth up to the war's conclusion, where Luke left the knights, leaving Roderick and Cecil to eventually becoming two of the country's finest paladins.

Roderick: Steady Squire
The Altean knights are a prestigious order, with young men and women all but lining up to become squires and join their storied ranks. Here's Roderick, a new recruit to the 7th Platoon!	Roderick lost his mother at an early age and was brought up living on meager means. He's quite a mature young man, having looked after his sisters since they were children.	While he does have a serious disposition, he's also good friends with Luke, a fellow recruit whose personality is quite the opposite of Roderick's. Despite their differences, however, they're an unstoppable team on the battlefield!	Roderick is a thoughtful, level-headed squire who's comfortable with people from different walks of life. There's no doubt that he'll leave his mark on history as a knight—and I hope he can spare some time to help the Order of Heroes too!
