Resistance

Resistance (Japanese:魔法防御magic defense), abbreviatedRes (Japanese:魔防 or MDF), is a statistic belonging tounits which determines their ability to resist the effects ofmagic. Its primary use is in reducing thedamage taken from attacks fueled by themagic stat, such as with atome ormagic weapon; in some games, it also determines how well-protected a unit is from the effects ofoffensive staves. Resistance does not mitigate damage from an opponent's physical attacks, which are fueled bystrength and opposed bydefense. It can be temporarily enhanced by using certainitems or occupying specialterrain types, and can also be boosted through somesupport bonuses.
Classes that use magic-based weapons—those that usestaves especially, such asPriest andTroubadour—typically have high resistance, while those that use physical weapons generally have low resistance;Pegasus Knights notably defy this trend, utilizing physical weapons and possessing high resistance. Classes with high resistance typically also have high magic andspeed, but poordefense andmaximum HP.
Resistance is somewhat unusual, particularly in the earlier games of theFire Emblem series, because it was rarely gained or used by many units, so it is common for resistance to be their lowest stat by far. Indeed, in the originalShadow Dragon & the Blade of Light, all units—both playable and enemy, with the sole exception ofGotoh—start with a resistance stat of zero and have zero resistancegrowth, meaning they will never have any resistance without using aTalisman,Pure Water, orBarrier staff. While the average resistance stats and growths have increased in subsequent games, it is still common for physically-inclined units to have very low resistance.
The resistance stat does not exist at all inFire Emblem: Thracia 776. Instead, the magic performs all of the same functions as resistance, being used for both magical offense and defense.
InFire Emblem: Three Houses, resistance is instead the main contributor forresilience, abbreviatedRsl, which reduces damage from magical attacks instead. Resilience functions as the total of the unit's resistance, as well as any bonuses from terrain,battalions, etc.
