Rescue (Japanese:レスキューRescue) is astaff in theFire Emblem series, first appearing inMystery of the Emblem and appearing in all but one game since (the exception beingShadow Dragon); inEchoes: Shadows of Valentia andThree Houses, which lack staves, Rescue appears as awhite magic spell. Its purpose is to warp distant allies next to the user; this essentially makes Rescue an inverse ofWarp, though it can be used for similar purposes to Warp.

Determining the location of a rescued unit

When Rescue is used on a unit, the game attempts to bring the rescued unit to the tile closest to the rescuer; how this is determined varies on the game. If there are multiple tiles equidistant from the caster, the game assigns a priority to the tiles (up > left > right > down in the GBA games; down > right > left > up inMystery of the Emblem,New Mystery of the Emblem andAwakening). Units are not allowed to be rescued on terrain that is occupied or untraversable.
If all tiles adjacent to the caster are not eligible for a unit to be rescued on, the game runs the priority algorithm again. For example, inThe Sacred Stones, the tile priority if all tiles adjacent to the caster are blocked, will be UU, UL, UR, LL, RR, LD, RD, DD. Note that after UR, the next sequence is technically UD, but this is ignored because going up and then down returns to the same tile as the caster; similarly, LU is ignored because it is functionally the same as UL; going left then up is the same as going up and then left. As Rescue will check tiles further and further away from the caster if it fails to find a suitable destination, it can be used to send units through obstacles or walls, provided enough destinations are blocked to force the target to be dropped off at such a location; this is the only way to access some otherwise off-limits areas such as the isolated pillars inNew MysteryChapter 23 on Lunatic (due to a lack ofWarp) or the sides ofAwakeningChapter 21.
Some games (likeNew Mystery of the Emblem) attempt to minimize the movement cost from the rescued unit to the rescuer; enemy units are not taken into account when doing so.
