Plot

Main article:Rescue (chapter)/Script

The Greil Mercenaries' healerRhys delivers a letter toTitania just outside the mercenary fort. The letter turns out to be from allies of the bandits from Caldea, who have capturedMist andOscar andBoyd's younger brotherRolf while they were out picking wildflowers. Furious,Ike runs out immediately, disregarding Titania's orders to wait for her, and is followed by Boyd, Rhys and Oscar.

When they arrive, they are confronted by the head bandit,Ikanau, who refuses to surrender the children until Titania arrives. The junior mercenaries engage the bandits, and are reinforced by Titania midway through. After the party defeats Ikanau and his minions, Titania scolds the other members for directly disobeying her orders. A surviving bandit attempts to murder Rolf, but is shot dead by a senior mercenary namedShinon. Titania explains to the rest of group that she went to get help from Shinon and fellow mercenaryGatrie in order to better prepare for the fight against Ikanau and his bandits. The group apologizes to Titania and Rolf thanks Shinon for saving him as they all head back home.

Strategy

This section details unofficial strategies that may help with completion of the chapter. This may not work for everybody.

This chapter introduces the player to the onlyPriest and first healer,Rhys. He cannot defend himself in any way, and his only purpose is to heal his companions. Due to his frailty, he must be protected at all times, lest he fall to one of the many enemies in this area.

The battle begins with onlyIke,Boyd,Oscar and Rhys in the lower left corner, who are tasked withRouting all of the enemies in the region. Once the second turn has ended,Titania appears from the south, and will aid the others in their task. Like in the previous chapter, she is practically invulnerable here, and could easily dispatch all of the enemies to the upper-right. Once again, however, it would be wise to let the weaker fighters get a chance to grow from those encounters, and let Rhys grow by healing their inevitable wounds. Like last time, she can and should get a decent chunk of experience by killing the boss.

Around the area, there areThickets and Healhedges, which can serve as valuable cover for both the mercenaries and the bandits. Hiding in one makes that unit harder to hit, and, in the case of the Healhedge, heals them a minor amount every turn.

The boss,BanditIkanau, is much the same as the previous boss, being only two levels higher thanZawana. On Easy and Normal modes he does not move from his spot, and drops aSpeedwing when he is dispatched, which can bestow a permanent speed boost on whoever uses it. Boyd is probably the best recipient of this boost, since he tends to tear apart anything he hits twice.

On Difficult Mode, there are four additional enemies to deal with, more of which use axes, making Oscar less effective. A strike force of bandits appears to the left, where only one was in lower difficulties. If Boyd got his Strength and Speed last chapter, he will one-round most enemies. In order to clear this map in five turns, the most efficient strategy is to send Ike north, have him consume the Seraph Robe, and let him take out that group of three enemies. If he's quick enough, he can rejoin the main group in the northeast just in time for the final turn. Meanwhile, the brothers and Rhys should aggressively push northeast. The enemies prefer to target Boyd due to his mediocre Defense, which will help you kill them on enemy phase. The goal is to reach Ikanau's group at the end of turn 4. Boyd should level up again; if he gets Strength again, he can one-round the level 3 Bandits.

Maniac Mode adds even more enemies, and all of them are nearly as strong as the chapter's boss. The player's primary focus should be on keeping all playable units alive until Titania arrives at the end of turn 2 to assist. This can be done most easily by either huddling in the starting corner, or carefully blockading the two-tile wide gap above the starting area, with Rhys protected in a corner. Enemy AI can also be exploited to an extent, as enemies with low health will prioritize healing over killing the player's units. When Titania arrives, it becomes relatively simple for the player to finish off the remaining southern enemies and advance to finish the chapter.

Bonus experience can be earned in this chapter, based on how many turns it takes to Rout all enemies. This experience cannot be spent untilChapter 8, however.
