Raigh

|
| “ | I want to protect those I hold dear and destroy all who oppose me. That's the power I seek. | ” | — Raigh, toNiime. |
|---|
Raigh (Japanese:レイLleu) is the son ofNino of theBlack Fang, and the twin brother ofLugh. After his parents disappeared in his infancy as a result of pursuing bounty hunters, he and Lugh were entrusted an orphanage inAraphen, where they were raised. At the onset of theDisturbance of Bern, Raigh left the orphanage in order to master his skill in dark magic.
Fire Emblem: The Binding Blade
Role
Raigh is the son ofNino. Since Nino had disappeared for a variaty of reasons, she put him and his twin brotherLugh in an orphanage for many years so that they would be safe.
Having left theAraphen orphanage some time ago, Raigh had travelled to theWestern Isles, where he was masquerading as an Etrurian soldier atJuteaux in order to observeEin, an "unhuman" of whom he had heard rumors. During an assault on Juteaux led byRoy, Raigh was reunited with Lugh andChad, who convinced him to ally with Roy.

Analysis
| This character analysis section may not be accurate to every player's experience. |
Base level performance
Raigh joins in Chapter 12 as a level 12Shaman. As a level 12 unit, he is eligible for early promotion. He is the first available dark magic user in the game, giving him a niche.Nosferatu is the most notable tome he can use, due to its ability to heal the caster after use, and unlike the later games, it has reasonably low weight. However, dark magic is inaccurate (comparably to axes), and if Nosferatu misses it also deprives the caster of its healing.
Raigh's main advantage is the fact he uses magic, and magic is the only form of reliable 1-2 range inThe Binding Blade. This allows him to deal solid chip damage to enemies without taking a counter. However, due to dark magic's aforementioned low accuracy, he has issues hitting reliably.
Dark magic also does not have a killer equivalent, which is bad as killer weapons are the best weapons in the game, and around the time he joins killer weapons become buyable. Killer weapons not only have better hit rates than most weapons but also have a higher crit chance, increasing reliability – if a player unit crits, they likely kill an enemy. Without a crit, one-rounding one of Hard Mode's enemies is unlikely, and only a few units manage that. This is why killer weapons are so strong inThe Binding Blade. Raigh's problem is that he cannot benefit from killer weapons since he uses magic. Without a crit, he cannot one-round any enemy, and bothFlux andNosferatu have 0 crit.
Furthermore, Raigh's base speed is insufficient to double most enemies, and even promoting him does not fix that. At base level,Flux weighs Raigh down by one point and Nosferatu by two points, further increasing the speed issue he faces. This makes Raigh's combat incredibly lackluster and making it good requires a large amount of effort. Raigh's magic is fairly high, especially after promotion, but not nearly high enough to make him one-shot enemies.
Promotion situation and long-term performance
Early promoting Raigh toDruid improves his stats all around, increases his dark magic weapon rank by one, and gives him access to E-rank staves. E-rank staves are nothing impressive, but they still allow Raigh to support his allies through theHeal staff. Raigh also gains a point of constitution and a point of movement, effectively increasing his speed by three points, which helps him double some enemies.
However, Raigh faces steep competition for this promotion. TheGuiding Ring is among the most competitive promotion items inThe Binding Blade.Lugh,Saul,Clarine,Elen,Sophia andLilina all have to use it to promote, and they all gain plenty from promoting. While the player is unlikely to be using all these units, they will likely use at least some, creating a conflict of interest. Raigh's promotion benefits cannot compare to that of staff users like Saul, for example. Gaining +50 staff experience is especially important for them since staff experience is very hard to accumulate. Raigh will never use high-rank staves unless the player grinds his staff rank post-promotion, which is suboptimal.
If Raigh receives some training and promotes, he can become an alright combat unit. Still, he is unlikely to ever double enemies unless the player gets lucky with growths and uses theSpeedwing on him. Even if Raigh does double, he may be unable to one-round tougher enemies despite his high magic. His best combat will usually be a Nosferatu tome, and with enough Magic, he can somewhat reliably OHKO many low-resistance units on retaliation with it, and even if not, safely bait a large number of enemies – particularly theChapter 21 Wyvern Riders.
Summary
Overall, while Raigh is a decent combat unit, especially after promotion, he is not spectacular in any way. Much like many other combat units inThe Binding Blade, he cannot one-round enemies and has severe doubling issues. He gains the ability to use staves after promotion, but E-rank staves are not very impressive. Furthermore, if the player is using a mount-dominated army, Raigh will fall behind unless rescue-dropped. These aspects make Raigh nothing more than a mediocre unit that can contribute but will never be anything beyond average.
Fire Emblem Awakening
Role
Raigh is playable as aSpotPass character, released in theThe Binding Blade character set. He also appears inAwakening's DLC as an enemy inSmash Brethren 2 and3 and as an NPC in aSmash Brethren 1.

Personality
Unlike his cheerful twin brother, Lugh, Raigh is mordant, gloomy, and rude to others. He is disrespectful to people he meets, including elders (as seen in his support conversation with Niime)[2] and nobles.[3] He is also very cynical, in his philosophy and how he talks. When Lugh tells him that he should try to be more sociable, Raigh calls him naive.[4] Raigh steals Hugh'sNosferatu tome, constantly fooling him into letting him keep it through excuses which even he regards as "lame," and is amused by Hugh's gullibility.[5] In addition, if he dies in gameplay, his last words describe how the world is filled with nothing but fools.[6]
As an experienced shaman, Raigh takes the dark arts very seriously, and plans on bringing it back to people's recognition across Elibe. When the war began, he had left the orphanage where he, Chad, and Lugh had lived in without a word, having been fed up with the deteriorating conditions of the orphanage, although he did leave a note briefly explaining how he left to train himself in the dark arts.[7] He is incredibly eager to learn the dark arts and master them, as seen in his support conversations with Niime, where he claims he would do anything to get her to teach him dark magic, even if it means groveling.[8]
Although Raigh is clearly snide and disrespectful, some people, including Chad, Sophia, and his brother Lugh, believe that despite his gloomy demeanor, he really is kind on the inside. After he and Chad meet with Roy before their support conversations, Raigh tells Chad to be proud of his work as a thief, as he's using his own unique talents, despite Chad's own self-criticism.[9] This leads Chad to conclude that Raigh is a good person on the inside, although he denies it.[10] In his support conversations with Sophia, she gives him an rare dark tome that Raigh had wanted, but he is concerned that she might need it herself. However, Sophia later explains to him that she gave the tome as a gift, as she believes that Raigh is kind.[11] He even claims he is willing to apologize to Niime to get him to teach him dark magic, and later (quietly) thanks her for doing so.[12]

Lugh and Raigh are twins. Roy is 15 years old. - ↑"Niime: Well? How are your studies going?
Raigh: ......
Niime: Hm... Don't even have the time to talk, do you? You're a rude one, and you lack respect for your elders." —Niime and Raigh's A support,Fire Emblem: The Binding Blade - ↑"Chad: Roy... I mean Lord Roy wants to see us.
Raigh You think I care?!
Chad: P-pipe down! Don't be so loud! That Merlinus guy'll be after us again!
Raigh: You're afraid of that old geezer, aren't you?
Chad: Well, sure. He and Lord Roy are nobles.
Raigh: Ha ha. Little Chad bows down to nobles now, does he?" —Chad and Raigh's C support,Fire Emblem: The Binding Blade - ↑"Lugh: Oh, one more thing. You should at least respond when you're spoken to! I don't mind that much, but strangers might get ideas. They might think that you're antisocial or something.
Raigh: Well, they'd be right. ...But whatever. My dear brother is as naive as ever." —Lugh and Raigh's C support,Fire Emblem: The Binding Blade - ↑"Raigh: You're a mage. What's the point in you having a Nosferatu tome anyway?
Hugh: Ergh... That's not the point...
Raigh: This powerful tome would be a waste in your hands. It would be your fault if we lost the battle without it.
Hugh: Er... F-fine, I'll let you have it for now. But I want it back with interest, you hear?!
Raigh: ...Heh, what an idiot. So gullible. I can't even comprehend such bumbling foolery." — Raigh andHugh's B support,Fire Emblem: The Binding Blade - ↑"Raigh: Hngh! In this world...there are only fools..." — Raigh's death quote,Fire Emblem: The Binding Blade
- ↑"Lugh: I was a little worried that you'd left again. The first time was so sudden. You just left a note and disappeared. I thought you might have walked off again without a word...
Raigh: ...Lugh.
Lugh: Your note said you wanted to train your dark magic skills alone. Was I...in your way? You didn't want me around...?
Raigh: N-no, that's not it... I always planned to come back once I became a powerful shaman." —Lugh and Raigh's B support,Fire Emblem: The Binding Blade - ↑ "Raigh: ...I...I want you to teach me dark magic. Teach me everything!
Niime: Hm... Is that how you ask for a favor, boy?
Raigh: ...I can change my tone if it's not to your liking. If you want me to grovel, I will. Just please, teach me your dark magic!" — Raigh andNiime's B support,Fire Emblem: The Binding Blade - ↑"Raigh: You still steal, don't you?
Chad: I've got no choice. I can't use magic like you. My only use in this army is picking locks and gathering intel...
Raigh: No, I think it's invaluable.
Chad: What?
Raigh: The other day when we went to see that Roy fellow... He said he appreciated our work because we're close to his age. But you humbled yourself the whole time, belittling your work.
Chad: Yeah? And?
Raigh: You do something no one else can. Have some pride in it. You look stupid when you put yourself down." — Raigh andChad's B support,Fire Emblem: The Binding Blade - ↑"Chad: I'll go see the children. Then I'll try and get enough money to rebuild the orphanage.
Raigh: Then I'll go with you. I can help out until the kids have a home at least.
Chad: ... I thought you would.
Raigh: What?
Chad: I knew you had a heart deep down inside.
Raigh: Wh--?!
Chad: Lugh always said you were a kind boy. I used to think he only defended you because you're brothers, but I guess not. Your brother knows the real you.
Raigh: ...You're just as naive as Lugh! Say what you will! I'm leaving!
Chad: Hah, there's no need to be embarrassed... Hey! Wait! You're actually leaving?!" —Chad and Raigh's A support,Fire Emblem: The Binding Blade - ↑"Raigh: I'm giving this tome back to you.
Sophia: ... What? ... Why...?
Raigh: I don't want charity. I'm not a beggar.
Sophia: ...Even so...I want you...to have it...
Raigh: What? Why?
Sophia: ... Because...you are a good person...
Raigh: Huh?
Sophia: ...You always act tough... ...But...you have a kind heart...so...you deserve it..." —Sophia and Raigh's A support,Fire Emblem: The Binding Blade - ↑"Niime: Now come... Come into the depths of darkness... You can start by mastering that book I gave you.
Raigh: ...... ...ank you...
Niime: Hm? What was that?
Raigh: ... Nothing." — Raigh andNiime's A support,Fire Emblem: The Binding Blade
