Analysis

This character analysis section may not be accurate to every player's experience.

Of the six Mercenary- andHero-class party members inShadow Dragon & the Blade of Light, Radd has the strongest growth rates, but gets off to arguably the weakest start. His low base stat values in HP and Strength hurt him, but high growths in both stats make it likely that these weaknesses will abate if Radd is given the chance to level up.Ogma,Navarre, andAstram remain superior infantry swordfighter options overall, but Radd is fully capable of catching up if the player sees fit to invest in him.

If the character's value for one of those two stats is higher than their promoted class's base value, they will not receive any bonus in that stat.

Analysis

This character analysis section may not be accurate to every player's experience.

Radd joins alongside another Mercenary,Caesar. Although he holds low bases, his growth rates are fairly high compared to some other members of the cast, notably his 70% growth in Speed, meaning it is highly likely Radd will get a point of speed upon most level ups. In Radd's joining chapter, there is an Arena, meaning that if the player chooses, Radd can be used in the Arena for gold and experience, his high speed meaning that he will double most enemies in the arena. This is especially beneficial for Radd, as his weapon level is only one below being able to equip theKilling Edge, and he has a fairly high Weapon Level growth of 50%, meaning Radd will likely be able to use the weapon after only a few level ups. This combined with the shop in this chapter selling the Killing Edge means that Radd can easily use these to cover for his fairly low luck, starting at 1 and only having a 40% growth. That being said,Ogma,Navarre, andCaesar will frequently make a better Mercenary, although if the player chooses to, Radd can be a fairly decent unit, who will double most enemies throughout Book 1 with his high speed.

Analysis

This character analysis section may not be accurate to every player's experience.

InShadow Dragon, Radd fares significantly worse than in the original, being one of the weakest characters in the game. He has subpar base stats, a poor weapon type, and faces heavy competition from Abel, Cain, Hardin, and Frey for any potential spot he could fill by reclassing. Even if he opts to stay a Myrmidon, Navarre joins five chapters earlier with higher base stats across the board, and a higher sword rank that enables him to use the Killing Edge to bypass his low Strength. His growths are only average at best, and the effort required to raise him to any level of self-sufficiency far outweighs the payoff for doing so. As the investment required for Radd to catch up with other characters is unlikely to be worthwhile by any objective metric, he is best left on the bench by those seeking to play optimally.

Analysis

This character analysis section may not be accurate to every player's experience.

Radd is the second Myrmidon to join the player’s army, joining shortly afterSamuel. The third Myrmidon,Navarre, joins very soon after Radd, and outclasses both previous Myrmidons by a wide margin. Radd’s biggest issue lies in his pitiful base strength. In conjunction with his lackluster 50% Strength growth, Radd is unlikely to ever reach a point where he will be dealing considerable damage to the enemy. The only thing impressive about Radd stat-wise is his base Speed, paired with a 65% Speed growth. This makes Radd faster than Samuel (about the only meaningful advantage he has over him), but it amounts to little given the low amount of damage Radd will be dealing, even if he is doubling. Radd’s C rank in Swords is respectable and it means he can wield aWyrmslayer. However, it is very unlikely Radd will be the player’s only choice for a Wyrmslayer user. Pretty much anyone else who can use the Wyrmslayer will put it to better use than Radd. One final nail in Radd’s coffin is his relatively low join level of five, which means he has a ways to go before he can promote. Overall, Radd is a very poor unit, surrounded by many others who vastly outclass him. He is even outdone by other bad Sword-wielding units like Samuel and Caesar.

Personality

Radd has very little dialogue inShadow Dragon and the Blade of Light andMystery of the Emblem; his ending states that he harbors romantic feelings for someone, and that he is willing to put aside his life as a mercenary.
