| “ | Never forget, Sigurd. I'm here for you, now and forever. | ” | — Quan, toSigurd |
|---|
Quan (Japanese:キュアンCuan) was the prince ofLeonster, the son of KingCalf, the father ofAltena andLeif, a full-blooded descendant of the CrusaderNjörun, and the inheritor ofGáe Bolg. In his youth, he was educated at theBelhalla military academy, where he metSigurd ofChalphy andEldigan ofNordion; the three quickly became close friends and pledged each other's support in times of need, and Quan eventually married Sigurd's sisterEthlyn. When he received word of theVerdane assault onGrannvale in Grann 757, he departed Leonster with Ethlyn and the young knightFinn to assist Sigurd, and travelled with him throughAgustria toSilesse.
While Sigurd was in exile in Silesse, Quan departed Sigurd's group to return to Leonster and raise reinforcements to assist him, and on his way through the Aed Desert to do so, he and Ethlyn were besieged by theThracian dragon knights and were killed, in what became known as theAed Massacre. Though he was never formally crowned during his life and in fact was killed before his father, years after his death he was nonetheless referred to as "King Quan" as an honorary title.
Biography

Shortly after Sigurd and the remaining Chalphy knights departed to combat the Verdane invasion force and reclaimYngvi, Quan, Ethlyn andFinn arrived to assist him. Though both Sigurd and Ethlyn apologised for what they saw as dragging him into the situation, Quan insisted that he would not have it any other way.[1] During Sigurd's sortie into Verdane to find the missingEdain, Quan askedAyra about theGrannvale-Isaach war, concerned about the nature of it given his father's high regard for Isaach's KingMananan. He learned of the role ofRibaut's leader in sparking the role, the assassination of Mananan, and Ayra's role in being entrusted withShannan.
Quan remained with Sigurd's army throughout the conflict withAgustria. One year into the Grannvale occupation of the country, when KingChagall started stirring trouble, Ethlyn revealed to him that his father had entrusted her withGáe Bolg, just in case; she handed it over to him, to better facilitate ending the conflict. The two and Finn initially accompanied Sigurd toSilesse when he fled there fromLombard's army, but departed shortly thereafter to return to Leonster to raise assistance for Sigurd. During their time back in Leonster, their youngest child Leif was born.
As Sigurd's army made its way from Silesse back to Grannvale, Quan and Ethlyn were also travelling there, now accompanied by Leonster's Lanceritter squadron, with the intent of assisting Sigurd in opposingLombard andReptor; the then-three-year-old Altena was with them, while Leif remained behind in Leonster under the care of Finn. However, as they crossed theAed Desert, Thracia's KingTravant and a squad of Thracian dragon knights appeared in pursuit of them, informed of their location byVeld of theLoptr Church.[2] Taken by surprise, Quan attempted to fight back as his knights were slaughtered, but even with Gáe Bolg he was overpowered and killed, as was Ethlyn. From their corpses, Travant took Altena and Gáe Bolg, raised Altena as his own daughter, and entrusted her with Gáe Bolg in his service.
Fire Emblem: Genealogy of the Holy War
Role
Quan is a playable character during the first generation. In thePrologue, he, along withEthlyn andFinn, appear as player units at the start of turn 3. If either he or Ethlyn is defeated in battle, both will permanently leave. Quan, Ethlyn and Finn will leave at the start ofChapter 4.
InChapter 5, regardless of if they survived, Quan, Ethlyn, and a squad of Leonster knights appear as partner units in the map's south-east corner onceLubeck castle has been seized. Quan only has theGáe Bolg in his inventory; once Ethlyn is killed, Quan will loose the Gáe Bolg. He is expected to die in battle against theThracian army; however, as the combat is unscripted, it is possible but unlikely for him to survive, in which case he disappears oncePhinora is seized.

Analysis
| This character analysis section may not be accurate to every player's experience. |
Quan is aDuke Knight who joins in the Prologue but leaves after chapter 3. Quan has excellent bases and high growths, making him a strong unit – onlySigurd has superior combat in the early game. Quan also has excellent mobility since he starts as a promoted mounted class. He is the only unit with movement equal to Sigurd's before other units start promoting.
Quan's primary combat flaw is that he does not haveFollow-Up and must rely onAdept for attacking twice. He is also hampered by the high weight of lances, the only weapon type he can use. His Adept activation rate is within 20-35%, making it unreliable. This problem can be fixed by giving QuanFinn'sBrave Lance orArden'sFollow-Up Ring. Furthermore, even without Follow-Up, Quan can weaken enemies and have weaker units finish them off.
Quan also gets a Holy Weapon,Gáe Bolg, in his conversation with Ethlyn near the end of chapter 3. While wielding the Gáe Bolg, Quan is nearly invincible and can fight an entire army by himself. The problem is that enemies will refuse to attack him while he wields it – since the AI "knows" the attempt is futile. Still, Quan will significantly help wrap up the chapter.
Quan has two significant weaknesses. He is locked to lances instead of swords, and he leaves after chapter 3. Quan's availability is still high, but the player should be cautious and give away his items before ending chapter 3. Unlike most pairings in the game, Quan and Ethlyn's children have reversed inheritance, withLeif inheriting items from his mother Ethlyn, not Quan, with Quan's items instead being inherited by his daughter, Altena, who joinsSeliph's army late in the game, so keeping valuable items on Quan is not beneficial.
Quan also struggles with accuracy in the early game because all early-game enemies use axes or bows. Quan cannot counter the bow users, and the axe users have a weapon triangle advantage against him. The weapon triangle is very potent inGenealogy since it grants +20/-20 bonuses/penalties. Luckily, Quan is bulky and capable of taking a respectable number of hits. The player can also use his combination bonus fromEthlyn; while Quan and Ethlyn stand next to each other, both gain +20% critical chance. This can allow Quan to one-shot some enemies, thanks to his high strength.
Overall, Quan is an excellent unit. He is the only unit that can keep up with Sigurd in terms of both movement and stats, making him stand out among his peers. His only real flaws are his lack of Follow-Up, being lance-locked, and somewhat low availability. None of them are significant enough to make Quan anything other than a good unit, though.

- ↑"Ethlyn: Quan, I'm sorry I dragged you into this mess as well... I know Chalphy isn't my family anymore, now that we're married, but I couldn't just sit back and do nothing. Thank you so much for coming. Not just from me, but from Sigurd.
Quan: There's no need for thanks, Ethlyn. Sigurd is every bit as important to me as he is you, remember? He is my brother-in-law now, after all. ...And I couldn't possibly leave you to fight all alone." —Ethlyn and Quan in thePrologue,Fire Emblem: Genealogy of the Holy War - ↑"Manfroy: If [Leif] lives, all our efforts to incite war in Thracia and assassinate Prince Quan will be for nothing.
Veld: I'm amazed the ruse has held for this long, frankly. The fools still think Travant was behind it all.
Manfroy: Eheheheh! I almost pity the Thracians, in the depths of their ignorance... Did it never occur to them that Travant had no way of knowing when Quan's forces would march, or what route they would take? Capitalizing on Travant's ambitions to make North and South Thracia tear each other apart... Everything happened exactly as you predicted it would." —Manfroy andVeld in theEndgame,Fire Emblem: Thracia 776 - ↑"キュアン Cuan
