Princess of Bern/Script
Melady arrives on the border between Lycia and Bern in order to speak with the local castle's commander,Ruud. PrincessGuinivere of Bern had gone missing, and Melady is looking for information. Ruud tells Melady that he knows nothing about what happened, prompting her to leave, but then he discusses with his soldiers how Guinivere is currently in the dungeon and he will sell her to Bern's enemies for a hefty sum.
Roy's forces then arrive in order to meet a group of mercenaries thatEliwood had hired to help him. After arriving, Roy encountersElen, who tells him that her mistress was captured by the local castle commander while trying to get an audience with Lycian lords.Merlinus advises against an unnecessary battle, but he is cut short by one of the local soldiers finding Roy's group, and a battle begins anyway.
Soon, the mercenaries hired by Eliwood - comprised ofDieck,Shanna,Lot andWard - arrive on the battlefield and help Roy's army. The fight ends with Roy's forces killing Ruud and seizing his castle, then finding Princess Guinivere in the dungeon. When she introduces herself, Roy refuses to believe it and thinks this is a trap, but eventually calms down and asks her why the sister of the King of Bern would come to Lycia peacefully. Guinivere explains that she disagrees with her brother and seeks a peaceful solution to the war, prompting Roy to accept her company, as he plans to meet with Lycian lords himself and he wants LordHector's opinion on the matter.

Strategy
| This section details unofficial strategies that may help with completion of the chapter. This may not work for everybody. |
New chapter, new characters. This will be the fashion for a while, so the player should be careful if they want to recruit all possible characters, since the game does not give any clues to who can recruit who until the battle has already begun. In this case, the player is granted two new units at the beginning of the chapter,Merlinus andElen, and other four in the second turn. All of them are blue units already.
Merlinus' class isTransporter, which means he can manage the army's weapons and items. The only way for him to gainexperience is to be hit, but there is no true reason to level him up;Merlinus will not promote and acquire battle abilities, and contrary toFire Emblem: The Blazing Blade, if he is not on the battlefield, the excess of weapons or items will not have to be dropped. On the other hand,Elen will be the only healer for two and a half chapters, untilClarine joins; should the player be interested inlight magic,Elen is one of three possible options, and it is the first to come.
At the beginning of the chapter, the nearest enemies are mostlylance users, but if the units gained some levels in the previous battle, they should not be a problem. The player has just to remember to keepElen andMerlinus out of the enemy's range. The northern (and only) village has a sword called "armorslayer", which will be useful against theboss.Marcus orShanna (a new character) can be sent to get this valuable weapon.
This chapter also features the first shops, anarmory and avendor. The vendor will not sell anytomes orstaves, so the player may want to skip it. The armory sells some basicswords andlances.
The true action begins in the second turn, with the arrival of the mercenary band hired byEliwood. With a grand total of four units, the player is introduced to their firstaxe users,Ward andLot.Ward is the stronger of the two, whileLot has better speed. The player can use them both (as they support each other and it is rather easy to get) or choose one, according to their preferences. The other two units have also new classes;Dieck is amercenary—asword user with good bases and good growths—andShanna is apegasus knight (flying unit with good mobility but quite frail). As a flying unit,Shanna does not receiveterrain bonus or penalties, which means that she will not receive the avoid bonus of forts and the like, but that she will also not be impeded by mountains or rivers. If the player is not interested in training her, at the very leastShanna can transport other units or visitvillages. The only precaution is not to put her onbows' range, as these weapons deal triple damage to flying units.
If the player looks at the map, the mercenaries' starting position is near two forts. They are to be immediately occupied byDieck and eitherLot orWard, thus facing the incoming army with a bonus to avoid and, if they are hit, the forts will heal someHP at the beginning of the player's turn. The third fighter can wieldLot'shand axe and attack from behind his companions, whileShanna can go to thevillage or bringRoy closer to the band – as long as thearcher near the forts is not dealt with, it is not safe to put her in the forts. There is a small conversation betweenDieck andRoy; it does not give anything, though.
Theboss can be a problem; he has gooddefense and a ranged weapon. The player should use either the rapier or thearmorslayer (Dieck may be the only one able to wield this weapon, as it has a D rank) to attack him, sinceaxes suffer from low accuracy and the gate givesRuud extra avoid. If the unit is hit,Elen can heal them, but the player shouldrescue her orRuud will attack and, most likely, kill her. Once the boss is defeated,Roy can seize the castle gate and the chapter will end.
Trivia
- The eastern portion of this chapter's map would later be reused forFour-Fanged Offense (Lloyd) inFire Emblem: The Blazing Blade
