Biography

Phina's ability to wieldRapiers inMystery of the Emblem suggests she was born and raised amongst royalty,[2] but such circumstances are never explicated.

Phina and the troupe.

When Phina was around sixteen or seventeen,[1] she was part of a traveling troupe of performers fromWarren as a dancer.[3] Phina wished to leave the troupe due to its chief often pervertedly approaching her.[4]

Navarre protecting Phina.

While travelling through a forest inChiasmir, Phina was lost and separated from the troupe;[5] she elected not to return to it.[6] While lost, she was attacked by bandits, but was rescued byNavarre, who betrayed the bandits to defend her. Phina and Navarre joinedMarth's army—which was nearby when she was attacked—and participated in theWar of Heroes.

After the War of Heroes concluded, Phina disappeared;[7] it is implied she did so with Navarre.[a]

Analysis

This character analysis section may not be accurate to every player's experience.

Phina is the first playable dancer of the series, and exemplifies the typical strengths of the class. Phina's strongest ability by far is her ability to dance and refresh the turn of another character. This is an incredibly versatile ability, enabling the killing of multiple targets by your strongest combatants, increasing movement for any unit, and even strategies to skip entire maps using powerful movement-enhancing or turn refreshing staffs. Phina is worth deploying the whole game for this reason alone, although with a movement of only 6 she can sometimes fall behind the rest of your army on outdoor maps where mounted units can far outpace her. Phina also has very weak defenses with only 16 HP, 2 Defense, and 0 Resistance. She can survive a single turn of combat against some enemies as she is fast enough to avoid being doubled, but she should generally be protected from facing enemy phase attacks. Phina can use swords in combat, with the ability to use theRapier otherwise exclusive toMarth and boasting fairly excellent growth rates in many offensive metrics. This is a largely useless ability however, as her base stats are incredibly deficient, and her dancing ability is so strong that it is a comparative waste of her turn to use her for anything other than dancing.

Analysis

This character analysis section may not be accurate to every player's experience.

Phina joinsMarth's army in Chapter 7 ofNew Mystery of the Emblem. She is the onlyDancer in the game, which gives her a unique niche.Dancing for a unit who has already acted during the current turn allows that unit to act again, giving the player additional options; for example, with Phina's dance, Marth can move farther in one turn to reach the seize point faster, or a combat unit can attack a strong enemy twice. In general, deploying Phina to grant the strongest unit additional actions will accomplish more than deploying the tenth-strongest unit. Additionally, Phina can move onto water tiles, which increases her mobility on certain maps, such asChapter 10 or13; this increased mobility can help her get into position to dance for a unit she otherwise would not be able to.

Phina starts with E rank swords and very low base stats, preventing her from dealing much damage to enemies, even on lower difficulties. While she does have high speed and strength growths, allowing a unit such asPalla orSirius to attack again will generally accomplish more than attacking with Phina, even after a considerable number of level-ups. Additionally, Phina cannotreclass, though she can contribute more as a dancer than she could as any other class.

Trivia

  • Phina can wield Rapiers inMystery of the Emblem, which are otherwise exclusive toMarth; according to Intelligent Systems' website, this is due to a secret of her heritage.[2] Phina cannot use Rapiers inNew Mystery of the Emblem, though her personal weapon inHeroes is a Rapier.
  • In theMystery of the Emblem Hideo Takayashiki novels, the surname "Sedaka" (Japaneseセダカ) is given to Phina.
