ThePhantom (Japanese:亡霊戦士Phantom Fighter) is a specialmonsterclass that appears inFire Emblem: The Sacred Stones. Phantoms are spawned by using theSummon skill, learned by units of theSummoner andNecromancer classes. In combat, they act as temporary humanoid warriors summoned by dark magic. Each Summoner or Necromancer can only summon one a time; however, if there are multiple Summoners and/or Necromancers in the battle, each can summon one. When a Phantom comes into battle, they have the same level as the unit who summoned them.

Phantoms useaxes, only have onehit point, and always have zerodefense andresistance. However, ifBarrier is used, their resistance does increase slightly. They appear holding a randomly selected axe. They are very limited in their ability to interact with other allied units: they cannottrade and they cannotrescue or be rescued, althoughstaves anddances can be used on them, and they can take and drop rescued allies. Generally, their low stats give them very little fighting power, and they die in one hit if the enemy does not miss. Therefore, they are usually used to bait or manipulate enemies, as the AI will always attack a unit if it can kill it, or slightly weaken opponents. They cannot change class in any way.

Three playable units are able to summon Phantoms:Ewan, if he ispromoted toShaman and then Summoner;Knoll, if he is promoted to Summoner; andLyon, who becomes usable during the post-gameCreature Campaign. There are no enemy Summoners and Lyon will not use Summon in his appearances as an enemy, so there are no enemy Phantoms.

Summoned unit stats

Ewan, Knoll, and Lyon each produce a specific Phantom unit with specific stats. The Phantom's stats are based on its creator'slevel, with its level matching that of the user and its stats increasing accordingly. Each character's Phantom has their own set of growth rates to determine their stats when summoned. Each character's Phantom also maintains battle/win/loss records, including those of all previously summoned instances of that specific Phantom (since, from a technical standpoint, they are the exact same unit as all previously summoned instances).

The axe held by a Phantom when it is spawned is randomly chosen from a pre-set list based on it/its user's level. Its axeweapon level is also based on its level.[1] Because Phantoms cannottrade, their axes cannot be removed from their inventories. This also means items dropped by enemies cannot be retrieved from their inventory if they defeat an enemy that drops something.
