Analysis

This character analysis section may not be accurate to every player's experience.

Osian joins in Chapter 1 as a level 1 Axe Fighter. Much like most other early-game units, he becomes unavailable starting from Chapter 4 and rejoins in Chapter 7.

Osian is best known for his personal weapon,Vouge, which he can obtain by visiting the southern village in Chapter 1. While its might is not impressive, it compensates by being one of the most accurate axes in the game, having 60 uses, 30 crit, and most importantly 1-2 range. Most units inThracia 776 have poor 1-2 range weapons, and many of those who do have poor durability; between his innateWrath, 3 FCM, and Vouge's 30 crit, Osian will always crit on his first attack on enemy phase and is almost guaranteed to do the same on his second attack on either player or enemy phase, and as such means he has no problems killing enemies at 1-2 range. Combined with his great bulk, Osian is one of the best units at killing groups of enemies on enemy phase, and despite starting at level 1 doesn't need much training to do so.

Osian's base stats are quite decent. His 9 base Speed lets him double most enemies consistently, and his 27 HP is enough to tank a few hits. His offensive growth rates are unimpressive, though between Vouge and the low stats of enemies he will generally get by fine. As mentioned, he has 3 FCM, though outside of Vouge he doesn't have many ways to use this as aKiller Axe is not available untilChapter 14x and even then requires work to obtain. He also has Wrath, which guarantees him a critical hit on enemy phase, though enemies inThracia 776 are generally not too difficult to kill to the extent where this makes a massive difference. His boss-killing is solid for a physical unit, but Wrath requiring the opponent to attack first makes it only useful on enemy phase, and he needs to use Vouge to have good hit rates, and even then hitting on defense is problematic against bosses on thrones.

Osian's promotion toMercenary is not very important, but it does increase his overall stats a decent amount which is useful as his growth rates are unimpressive. Promoting Osian does give him the ability to use swords, starting at D rank, but this is hardly ever useful - axes will still be Osian's best weapons, and theWeapon Triangle bonuses/penalties aren't particularly significant inThracia 776 compared to other games in the series; Osian will still maintain solid hit rates even when wielding an axe against sword-wielding opponents.

Osian has a low weapon rank in axes, with a mere E rank at base, and doesn't gain any more on promotion. While he has 40 base weapon experience in axes, letting him reach D rank quickly, he is still quite far from using effective axes like the Hammer or the Poleaxe. However, Osian's Vouge usually does the job in the early game, and Osian is likely to receive some training since he is one of the player's best options for early-game combat.

One of Osian's weaknesses is his abysmal Magic, with 0 at base, a measly 5% growth, and only 1 upon promotion. Osian will sit at single-digit Magic for the entire game, causing him to take a lot of damage from enemy magic users. While his physical 1-2 range means he is still one of the better units for taking down enemyDark Mages, they will do heavy damage to him which limits his ability to take on many of them at a time. Osian's low Magic also means he is easy prey for enemy status staff users, which is especially problematic as the AI prioritizes enemies with high HP.

Osian's biggest downfall however is his unimpressive movement and high constitution. This means that any unit that tries to rescue him will have their move cut in half, which makes him very difficult to ferry around. This is especially problematic for maps likechapter 15 where units will want to be ferried across otherwise impassable terrain with fliers, but for most outdoor maps Osian will lag behind mounted units. Fortunatly, even if he misses out on several chapters of deployment, his combat is strong enough that he can easily catch up and stay relevant.

As for investment, the best investment Osian can get is the Od Scroll, one of the Crusader Scrolls. Osian's Skill growth increases by 30% with the scroll in his inventory, improving his accuracy and reliability in the long term. Osian will also want more speed to help him double some late-game enemies, though for most of the game he is fast enough to not have doubling issues. Besides, as with all Crusader Scrolls, having it in his inventory makes Osian immune to critical hits. This removes a threat that could kill him when he is enemy-phasing a large number of enemies.

Officially romanized asOthin. Othin is occasionally used as a translation of Óðinn (usually Odin), although the resemblance between the two names is likely not intended; theFire Emblem Osian's Japanese name does not resemble the Japanese name of Óðinn at all, and much more likely derives from Oisín, given the pronunciation and the character being in theFiana Freeblades, a group named after the Fianna.
