Niles (Japanese:ゼロZero) is a cruel man working for the prince ofNohr,Leo, inFire Emblem Fates.

Biography

Niles is a servant of Leo. He was originally a poor man from the slums of Nohr. He has done things in the past that he will not even speak to about even to his closest confidants. He is one of the thief-type characters for the Nohr route, being able to unlock doors and chests, with the others beingKaze andShura. Niles also serves as the Nohrian capturer. If the player'sMy Castle has a prison he is able to capture enemies and whisk them away to the player's jail.

Analysis

Niles is anOutlaw that joins on turn 2 ofchapter 8 inConquest, and on turn 3 ofchapter 17 inRevelation. His standout stats arespeed andresistance, which allow him to one-round theDark Mages in his join chapter at base, even on Lunatic. Unfortunately, he suffers from a weapon triangle disadvantage and has averageskill, which may lead him to missing a few important hits; as such it's recommended to trade him aSkill Tonic to improve his accuracy. Other than that he is a useful combat unit for that point in the game. Niles also suffers from lowstrength anddefense, which harms both his damage output and his survivability. He comes with the skillsKidnap andLocktouch in both routes, along withMovement +1 at base inRevelation. Kidnap allows you to use the capture command to capture certain enemy units if you have a prison inMy Castle. Locktouch allows him to open any chest and door without the use of keys. Lastly, Movement +1 grants him additional mobility, making it one of the best skills inFates.

Niles has the option to promote to eitherAdventurer orBow Knight. Bow Knight gives Niles a mount and access to swords. Swords are mostly useless for Niles, but getting a mount in combination with his Movement +1 skill gives him 9 move, making him an excellent pair up partner for any unmounted units. While in the Bow Knight class, Niles learns the skillsShurikenbreaker andRally Skill. Rally Skill is useful against hard to hit bosses and enemies, while Shurikenbreaker lowers the hit of enemy dagger or shuriken users. Thanks to the manyNinjas in the lategame ofConquest in combination with Niles' high speed and weapon triangle advantage, this makes Niles one of the few units able to reliably dodge them, making him extremely useful inchapter 25. Adventurer gives Niles access to staves, while he does at first only join with an E rank in staff he can be trained up to wield higher rank staves relatively quickly. While in the Adventurer class, Niles learns the skillsLucky Seven andPass. Lucky Seven is a helpful ability during chapters where the player is seriously pressed for time, notablychapter 21, chapter 25, andthe endgame. Pass in combination with arescue staff makes the endgame ofConquest much more bearable.

InConquest, him being the first unit with Locktouch, and likely the first bow user, as well as the only unit with ability to capture enemies makes Niles an excellent utility unit through the entire game. His earlygame combat is fairly good as well, being a great counter to the many fliers inchapter 10 and often doubling enemies with the use of tonics, as well as having good 2 range unlike most units and classes inFates. Niles's combat does drop off in the endgame as his mediocrestrength make his combat weaker than the likes of Camilla and Xander, though he can still do decent chip damage thanks to the relatively high might of bows. He can also still find use as a pair up bot, and he'll likely retain his utility as a capturing unit. The standout units to capture areHaitaka fromchapter 9,Kumagera fromchapter 14, aMaster of Arms inchapter 23 colloquially known as "Rallyman",Gazak fromparalogue 16 and many more.

Niles is in a rather unfortunate position inRevelation, joining relatively late, likely behind most of your other units with a lot of competition in terms of bow users, Locktouch users and even another unit with the ability to capture enemies (Orochi). Niles can still find use in some chapters for his great overall utility, but will likely not be a main team staple unless trained up to be on par with other units. His most reliable use in this path will likely be hispair up bonuses, granting others useful boosts to speed and movement.

On the subject of reclassing, Niles has access to magic based classes such asDark Mage,Sorcerer andDark Knight. While Niles won't want to stay in these classes for long thanks to his low magic, he can still pick up useful skill in said classes.Heartseeker is a great utility skill against bosses,Seal Magic works nicely with a unit who has high resistance such as Niles,Vengeance is situational, but improves his combat slightly, andLifetaker can be a great way to improve Niles' survivability, even if Niles isn't an enemy phase oriented unit.

Overall, Niles is a decent combat unit with excellent utility. Though he doesn't stand out as much inRevelation, he's an invaluable asset inConquest, especially on Lunatic, thanks to his availability, his combat against enemy mages, and overall great utility thanks to his varied skills and classes.

The normal variation of Niles is one of the characters available to be summoned by players from the game's initial launch. Niles: Cruel to Be Kind
Here’s Niles, one of the retainers who serves Leo, the second-eldest prince of Nohr! Despite his respectable position, Niles comes from a less than ideal background—a life of crime and vice, in fact!	Niles was born and raised in poverty, and for a while, he lived as a solitary thief. From his early childhood, he’d stoop to any low just to survive, and every day was a new ordeal.	One day, Niles snuck into the royal castle during a failed burglary that saw him abandoned by his accomplices. Rather than killing Niles for his crime, Leo took an interest in him, making Niles his retainer then and there.	Niles has a rather dry and callous sense of humor, and sometimes it’s hard to understand his intentions through all the dark remarks that he tends to make. I keep meaning to ask him to just spell it out, but Commander Anna’s always been quick to stop me…

Niles is a former thief who now serves the royal family of Nohr. Today, he’s making an appearance at the harvest festival, dressed to the nines in a fabulous costume!	And here he is: Niles, a creature of the night! The horned hairband and bat-wing cape he’s wearing sure do leave a big impression, don’t you think?	Even that bow he’s carrying has a bat-wing theme, and the arrows have a curious candelabra design!	Niles says the passion of the festival burns hot enough to scorch the soul…or something like that. I guess he’s bringing his unique way with words to the harvest festival!
