Monica von Ochs^[2] (Japaneseモニカ＝フォン＝オックスMonica von Ochs) is a non-playable character mentioned inFire Emblem: Three Houses and a playable character inFire Emblem Warriors: Three Hopes. She was a student from theBlack Eagles House atGarreg Mach Monastery.

Biography

Pre-games

Monica was a scion from House Ochs in theAdrestian Empire. In Imperial Year 1175, theDagda and Brigid War occurred, in which her house was attacked by the combined forces ofDagda andBrigid.

In 1179, Monica enrolled at the Officers Academy inGarreg Mach Monastery as a member of theBlack Eagles, but she disappeared right before graduation during a trip back home,^[3] leading to many people to speculate she had run away.

Three Houses

In mid-1180, she appears to be discovered unconscious in the Monastery byByleth and their class, and is rescued right along withFlayn in a secret chamber beneathJeritza's living quarters, where they had just fought the Death Knight up until he was forced to retreat by theFlame Emperor. Monica is then allowed to enroll once again in the Black Eagles so she may finally graduate. It is eventually revealed that the girl the player had known as Monica is in fact the assassinKronya. After this revelation,Seteth theorizes that Kronya may have murdered the real Monica and used her form as a disguise, although this hypothesis is never definitively proven in-universe.

Warriors: Three Hopes

In early 1180,Shez and their classmates discover Monica while mopping up the survivors ofKostas' band of thieves and rescue her, preventing her from being replaced byKronya. Monica identifies the Garreg Mach librarianTomas as her kidnapper and rejoins the Black Eagles, fighting alongside them for the Adrestian Empire during the war that ignites two years later as one of Edelgard's vassals.

Monica (or rather, Kronya impersonating her) is an NPC who can be interacted with at Garreg Mach Monastery during Chapters 7 and 8.

Role

Monica appears as an NPC ally in Chapter 2 of all three routes, and becomes a playable character in Chapter 3 of the Scarlet Blaze route. She also appears as an enemy in Chapter 7 of Golden Wildfire and Chapter 11 of Azure Gleam.

Personality

InWarriors: Three Hopes, Monica's own character is expanded upon. She has a deep attraction to Edelgard, blushing when complimented by her, fawning over her, relishing in her successes and trying to do everything in her power to be of service to her and thus curry her affection.^[4] Her devotion to Edelgard goes beyond her attraction to her, however, to a deeply held belief in her ideals.^[5] This can bleed into a dedication to her work to the point of overworking herself, enough for others to notice.^[6]

Monica has a rivalry with Hubert and the two are frequently arguing, especially over who can more efficiently serve Edelgard: in private, Monica does concede Hubert is the more effective retainer, especially due to her own duties as the heir to House Ochs, but nevertheless she strives to attain the same level of closeness.^[7][8] She also has a friendship withDorothea, whom she idolized in her youth. She initally places her on a pedestal, though throughout the course of their supports they become more casual with each other.^[9]

In addition to her devotion to Edelgard, Monica holds a strong hatred forthose who slither in the dark, taking pleasure in the opportunity to exact vengenace upon Kronya for nearly killing her.^[10]

InThree Houses, Monica as portrayed by Kronya is a very cheerful and jolly girl who likes spending company withEdelgard too much (whom she nicknames "Edel"), to the pointHubert has to step in at one point just so his liege can have a moment of tranquility. Her true personality is obfuscated by the fact that she is being impersonated by Kronya throughout her acquaintance with Byleth however, as multiple students in the monastery andHilda herself comment the real Monica wasn't as cheerful as her impostor, to the point they consider she might be putting a facade as means to cope with having been held hostage underground for a whole year.
