Merric (Japanese:マリクMarich) is anAltean noble and a good friend of Altean royaltyMarth andElice. Having studied inKhadein before theWar of Shadows, he is amage with theunique ability to wield the wind spellExcalibur, bestowed upon him by his master,Wendell. He was one of Marth's trusted allies in his wars to liberateArchanea from the clutches of theDolhr Empire.
Merric is a playable character inFire Emblem: Shadow Dragon & the Blade of Light, both books ofMystery of the Emblem, and their respective remakes; he is notable for being the first magic user in the entireFire Emblem series. He also appears as abonus playable character character inAwakening and as a summonable unit inHeroes.
Biography
Prior to game events
Rather than becoming a knight of Altea like what much of his peers expected, Merric wanted to study magic in Khadein.[1] His close friends Marth and Elice were particularly supportive in him perusing such which greatly inspired him.[2] He planned on returning to Altea and protect Elice for the rest of his life after he deemed his studies complete.[3][4] When he was little, Elice also often nursed Merric back to health due to his delicacy.[5]

In Khadein, Merric enjoyed the presence of various teachers and fellow aspiring students.[6] He specifically went under Pontifex Wendell's tutelage.[7] Due to Merric's compassion, Wendell bestowed the Excalibur tome to him.[8][9]
War of Shadows
In his realization that the War of Shadows was occurring, Merric left Khadein to find Marth.[10] The two eventually reunited at a village inAurelis during A.C. 604,[a] where Merric joined Marth's army—soon theArchanean League—against the Dolhr Empire up to the end of the war. After its conclusion, he kept Elice in his heart as he returned to Khadein[14] and helped in the city's restoration after its collapse in the war.[15]
War of Heroes

Because Wendell departed Khadein for a time, he gave Merric andArlen governance of the city.[16] Eventually, the outbreak of theWar of Heroes occurred, wrought by EmperorHardin of theHoly Empire of Archanea. Marth's army fled a battle against Hardin's forces at theChiasmir Strait and reached Khadein. Due to Arlen, the mage army of Khadein aligned with the empire[17] and was hostile to their arrival. Inside the temple, Arlen falsefully framed Merric for conspiring with Altea's arrival[18] and provoked a duel with him.
Merric joined Marth's army after things settled in the temple; following him to the end of the war. In A.C. 608,[b] he traversed theDragon Altar with theAltean League to rescue Elice who was captured byGharnef in a plot to reviveMedeus. Upon reaching the altar's top, Merric's personal confrontion with her freed Elice from Gharnef's trace; as they embraced, and Merric promised to never leave her again.[21]
After the War of Heroes concluded, Merric and Elice together founded thePalace Magic School within thecapital of Archanea and later happily married.[22][23]
Fire Emblem: Shadow Dragon & the Blade of Light
Role
Merric is recruited in Chapter 4 in a village byMarth. He and Marth, having known each other since childhood, fondly greet each other, and Merric explains that he has been inKhadein to study magic, having come toAurelis to find Marth. When Marth requests that Merric join his party, he agrees, wishing to show off the might of his Excalibur tome. As well, Merric can be used to recruitWendell inChapter 5 by talking to him.
Notably, Merric is the first magic user to join Marth's ranks, being of the Mage class.

Analysis
This character analysis section may not be accurate to every player's experience.
Merric is the first Mage available, and has exclusive access to the tomeExcalibur, which is one of the most useful tomes in the game; it has 13might—higher than any tome other thanAura—a fairly lowweight of 3, highercrit than any other tome at 20, and the most uses of any tome in the game at 33. It is the best tome available until the Aura tome inChapter 11; however, Aura is exclusive toLinde, and because of Aura's high weight and Linde's low base speed, she will be unable to double with it for a long time. Because of this, the only tome to generally match Excalibur is theThoron tome first available inChapter 14—Thoron has the same might and weight as Excalibur but has less crit anddurability. With Excalibur, Merric will deal the highest magical damage for 13 chapters, and potentially beyond. Merric's base weapon level of 5 and growth of 80% also means that he can likely use any other tome when it becomes available. Because enemies always have no resistance and tomes do a set amount of damage, this magic damage is highly valued, and is one of the best ways to defeat bosses.
Merric's movement is low at only 6, so he will be unable to keep up with other units as easily. He is also very frail with only 20 HP and 4 defense; while his HP growth is high, his defense is not, and he will likely die to any enemy that doubles him. His speed of 6 and growth of 50%, while good, is not enough to consistently double faster enemies. He can promote to a Bishop, which grants him very significant advantages; notably his speed goes up to 14, his defense goes up to 8, and he gains the ability to usestaves. Staff use is especially good, since he can use very useful staves likeWarp andPhysic. He cannot promote untilChapter 19 at the earliest when the firstBishop's Ring becomes available, and he has to compete for it with other Mages andCurates. Even if he does not promote, however, he can contribute strong magic damage, and likely defeat many weaker, slower enemies throughout the game.
Fire Emblem: Mystery of the Emblem
Book 1
Role
Merric, for the most part, serves the same role in Book 1 as he did inShadow Dragon & the Blade of Light. However, there is a key difference in his recruitment; due to the fact thatBattle in the Lea was removed fromMystery of the Emblem, he is instead recruited inChampions of Aurelis, the fourth chapter ofMystery of the Emblem Book 1, previously the fifth chapter ofShadow Dragon & the Blade of Light.

Analysis

In Book 1, Merric joins in Chapter 4 with terrible base stats, but carries a personal weapon—theExcalibur tome. The tome has excellent stats—12might, 3weight, 100hit, 30crit, 25 uses, and effectiveness against flying units. With Excalibur, Merric will be able to contribute from the moment he joins without any investment. Excalibur is strong enough by itself to one-shot enemy flying units, and with a critical hit, it can one-shot most enemies. Considering the overwhelming majority of enemies inMystery of the Emblem have no resistance, Merric will deal high damage most of the time.
Merric gains access to staves upon promotion toBishop; with his high weapon level growth, he will likely be able to use most staves in the game, with the exception of personal staves. The firstBishop's Ring in Book 1 can be obtained inChapter 15; Merric will compete withLinde andClerics to promote, but his strong combat makes him a good candidate for promotion with it.
Book 2
Role
Merric is recruited in Chapter Ten of Book 2, and is available from the start of the first turn. Here, he has returned to Khadein to further bolster his magical repertoire, but after Khadein swears allegiance to Archanea, Merric is attacked by a mage corps led by his rival,Arlen.
After being rescued, Merric joins forces with Marth once again. Inthe final chapter, Merric is needed in order to breakElice, with whom he is in love, out of Medeus's control by speaking with her.

Analysis

In Book 2, Merric joins in Chapter 10 with pretty decent base stats. His base level is 10, and he can promote immediately using one of the availableBishop's Rings such as the one fromChapter 9, the chapter before Merric joins. He might have to wait for theChapter 14 Bishop Ring if the player decided to promote a different magic user and didn't buy enough ones in theChapter 5Secret Shop, however. Promotion allows Merric to use staves, and thus contribute without entering combat—with his high base weapon level, he will be able to use most staves with no additional investment.
Merric carries his personal tomeExcalibur, which is just as useful in Book 2 as in Book 1; it has among the best stats of any tome and iseffective against flying enemies—strongWyverns are common in many chapters following Merric's recruitment. Additionally, enemy resistance is generally low, so Merric will deal high damage to most enemies throughout the game, even without Excalibur.
Fire Emblem: Shadow Dragon
Role
InShadow Dragon, Merric fulfills the same role that he did inShadow Dragon & the Blade of Light, joining Marth's army at his request after having trained in Khadein. As well, he can once again be used to recruit his teacher, Wendell. However, his role was somewhat expanded, having received two new scenes.
InChapter 11, after Marth recruitsLinde, he may speak with her. The two then bond over their shared Mage status. InChapter 24, after Elice is recruited in the previous chapter, Merric may speak with her; he vows to protect her, but gets flustered when she finds his actions endearing, setting the tone for their future relationship.

Analysis
This character analysis section may not be accurate to every player's experience.
Merric joins in Chapter 4 and is the first unit who joins as aMage. Like in previous installments, he carries theExcalibur tome, which is very useful; it has 13might, only 1weight, 100hit, 20crit, andeffectiveness against flying units. Even though Merric will likely never be able to double on higher difficulties, he will still be able to one-shot flying units with the tome.
None of Merric's base stats are impressive. His 20 HP and 4 defense can allow him to take a hit even on higher difficulties, but he will usually die to anything beyond that. His magic and speed growths are fairly high, but on higher difficulties, he cannot reliably double or deal significant damage with any tome except Excalibur.
Merric can later be promoted toSage to gain some statistical bonuses and access to E-rank staves, but having E-rank staves is not very useful, and increasing his Staff level will take much time. If Merric is reclassed toBishop, he can gain D staves, but further increases will take significant time. Other units, likeCaeda, are strong competition forMaster Seals due to how significant their promotions are, while promoting Merric does not provide him with any significant benefits.
Additionally, Excalibur is no longer Merric's personal tome; any unit can use it with B level tomes, though Merric can use it at any level.Wendell joins soon after Merric and overshadows him with superior weapon ranks, a very high speed base, and promoted stats. Wendell can use Excalibur at base level, and will generally deal more damage. Wendell also starts with a higher staff level than Merric would have after promotion, and can reach C staves much faster, further eclipsing Merric. If Wendell is reclassed, Merric will likely be the only other unit capable of using Excalibur; however, the existence of another early-joining unit who can use his powerful tome severely undermines his usefulness.
Merric's best use is as a long-term investment. His biggest advantage is that his growths are all good and his average stats in the endgame will blow most pre-promoted magic users out of the water. Assuming he receives all five Spirit Dusts and reaches A-rank in tomes, Merric needs to grow Magic eight times over the course of the game to guarantee one-shotting enemy fliers in the Endgame with Excalibur, which he will reach on average at level 20/3 or 10/16 - a feasible goal if he is fed kills at a decent pace. His biggest competition for this role isEtzel, who comes in with 11 base Magic and only needs to grow it once over the course of the game to reach the same benchmark; training both is not feasible since there's only really enough Spirit Dusts for one. In addition, Etzel's lack of availability can be compensated for through the use of Wendell, whose combat falls off right before Etzel joins. However, Merric is still significantly faster, allowing him to do better against non-flier enemies, and of course there's the obvious advantage of not needing to butcher two thirds of the player's army in order to use him. Ultimately, Merric requires a lot of love to make work, but he can pull his weight throughout the game if the player chooses to use him.
Fire Emblem: New Mystery of the Emblem
Role
InNew Mystery of the Emblem, Merric takes on the same role that he did inMystery of the Emblem's second book, though expanded. Merric now takes part in the newly-added prologue chapters, being a usable character fromPrologue 5 onward. He comes equipped with a Fire tome instead of his usual Excalibur, and assists when bandits attack a nearby village.
After the Prologue is finished, Merric returns to Khadein. He is not seen again until Chapter Ten, wherein Arlen once again is attempting to kill him for seemingly betraying Khadein and siding with Altea. Merric tries to explain that he had no intention of succeeding Wendell as Arlen feared, but Arlen nonetheless attacks him. Merric is also once again needed to recruit Elice in the final chapter.
Merric also appears in the downloadable missionWind and Thunder. Merric, Arlen,Etzel, and Linde head to the deserts surrounding Khadein in order to investigate rumors of dark rituals being performed relating to Gharnef.
With the newly-added support conversations, Merric can have conversations with bothKris andLinde.
As with a number of other characters inNew Mystery of the Emblem, there is a unique weapon named for Merric available throughEveryone's Conditions:Merric's Tome.

Analysis
This character analysis section may not be accurate to every player's experience.
Merric is the firstMage to join the players army in the prologue ofNew Mystery, unless the player has decided to haveKris start out in the mage class. Due to most enemies in the prologue having poor resistance, Merric is able to contribute with notable chip damage which is also accurate and safe due to being able to hit from 2 range. Merric also has good base stats, with a speed stat of 10 allowing him to avoid getting doubled by most enemies and his 24 HP and 7 defense allowing him to survive a hit even on Lunatic difficulty mode. Merric will leave the army afterPrologue 8 and won't return as a playable character untilChapter 10. Due to this Merric isn't available for a notable amount of chapters and when he rejoins his base stats will be much less impressive. Merric also sports a low D rank in tomes, which means that he will have to rely on hisExcalibur tome to deal notable damage. Merric also has a low personal magic growth of 10%, which will prevent him from doing notable amount of damage with his tomes as the game progresses and enemies get stronger, without effective damage or a critical hit.
Merric's main flaw is that by the time he rejoins, he will likely be outclassed by other units. Like inShadow Dragon, Excalibur isn't Merric's personal tome anymore and units with B rank in tomes, likeEtzel orWendell, can also use it. Merric does luckily join at level 10, so he can early promote, but promoting requires aMaster Seal which are limited and even with an early promotion he will be stuck with an E rank in staves that relegate him to only being able to use theHeal staff, while Etzel already joins one chapter earlier, prepromoted, with higher weapon ranks and comparable growth rates and base stats to an early promoted Merric.
Overall, Merric is a very useful character in the prologue chapters ofNew Mystery of the Emblem, but he will likely be outclassed and have trouble standing out once he rejoins the army.
Fire Emblem Awakening
Role
Merric appears as an enemy unit in theDLC chaptersLost Bloodlines 2 and3. A version of Merric is playable viaSpotPass as part of theShadow Dragon character set.

Merric/Heroes
There are three different variations of Merric available inHeroes.
Personality
Merric was a frail child growing up, and due to coming from a family of prestigious knights, he was a bit of an outcast. Being a noble, he was able to become friends withMarth andElice at a young age. Due to his frailty, Elice would often need to heal him, leading to his infatuation with her. Eventually, wishing to return the favor to Marth and Elice for being so kind to him, Merric followed his dream of studying magic and left Altea for Khadein.
Merric is a kindhearted and studious character with a deep love for the study of magic. In his conversation withLinde inShadow Dragon, he claims to view their shared status as Mages in high regard, as they would have little trouble taking care of themselves. Additionally, according to his support conversations with Linde inNew Mystery of the Emblem, he also wrote a thesis about the nature of magic, further showcasing his love for the subject and his general scholarship. However, despite loving the study of magic, Merric's loyalty still belongs to the Altean royal family, as he has no intention of succeeding Wendell, leaving the position open for Arlen instead.
Being a kind individual, Merric greatly values his friends. In Marth and Linde's support conversation inFire Emblem Warriors, Linde tells Marth that Merric enthusiastically praises him whenever they talk, and Marth, slightly embarrassed, says that he also speaks highly of Linde when they're alone. Merric also viewsArlen as a friend even after he makes an attempt on Merric's life, to Arlen's chagrin. Merric's kindness is also noted by Elice, who laughs at the thought of Merric taking down hordes of enemies to protect her, saying that he is far too kind to do something like that, and that she prefers it that way.
Merric is also deeply in love with Elice, and has been since they were both young. She, alongside Marth, had encouraged him to follow his dreams and become a Mage, and he grew to love her for it. When the War of Shadows breaks out and Elice is captured, Merric seeks out Marth, joining his childhood friend in avenging Altea and saving Elice. During the War of Heroes when she is once again captured, Merric takes the abduction to heart, blaming himself for failing to protect her once again. During the final chapter, he tries to break through to her, despairing over the fact that he felt her abduction and mind control was his fault. His love for her helps her come to her senses and break through Medeus's control. Hearing Merric's declaration of love, she embraces him, leaving him overjoyed, though he quickly becomes flustered when he realizes others are watching.
In the epilogue ofNew Mystery, Merric teaches at the magic academy that Elice started after the War of Heroes, after the two had fallen in love. His students came to love him for his kindhearted and patient nature.

Notes
- ↑The Battle for Altea chapter is stated to take place two years after Dolhr seized Altea.[11] Since theMarth Embarks chapter is stated to take place in A.C. 604[12] and the siege of Altea happened in A.C. 602,[13] that would mean all chapters between them take place during A.C. 604.
- ↑The War of Heroes ended in A.C. 608,[19] and Hardin's death—which occurred before Marth went to the Dragon Altar—happened in the same year.[20]
