TheMerchant (Japanese:商人Merchant, or大商人Daisyounin) is aclass which was introduced inFire Emblem Awakening. In its first appearance, it is a non-playablespecial class used exclusively by travellingmerchants when they appear in battle inskirmishes, with the objective being to protect them from being harmed byRisen for a reward. They wieldlances and usually have access to reasonably powerful weapons such asSilver Lances, but are statistically lacking and thus still highly vulnerable. Theirmovement is also nullified to prevent them from moving without having aRescue staff cast on them by a playable unit.

Merchants also appear as a component of thedownloadable content packagesFive-Anna Firefight andApotheosis, utilized as the class of anyAnna character in those chapters.

InFates, the Merchant is anadvanced class aligned withHoshido. It is aclass change option for bothVillagers andApothecaries, and is a practitioner of bothnaginata andyumi. It has relatively average stats, with goodstrength, defense, andresistance. The class's uniqueskills,Profiteer andSpendthrift, allow Merchants to generateGold Bars and either hold onto them to sell, or use them to increase their damage output.
