Marty (Japanese:マーティMarty) is a member ofDagdar's bandit crew based inThracia's Mount Violdrake, and an ally of theFiana Freeblades.

Biography

Marty arrived inFiana with Dagdar andTanya duringLeif andEyvel's fight to free it from the Munster army, and quickly joined with the Freeblades to drive the occupation out. He accompanied Leif until his capture by Raydrik at Fort Kelbeth, at which point he retreated with Dagdar to Mount Violdrake.

WhenGomez staged a mutiny against Dagdar, Marty initially sided with Gomez's faction out of fear for his own safety, but was persuaded to rejoin Dagdar and Leif byOsian andHalvan.

Analysis

This character analysis section may not be accurate to every player's experience.

Marty is aBrigand who is available for most of the game apart from theMunster escape chapters. He has 15 base constitution, and also has the best defense growth in the game, and is tied withTroude for the bestHP growth along with solid base HP. Sadly, he has horrendous bases and growths inskill andspeed, with his bases in the same two stats being a flat zero. This means that he risks getting doubled by enemies and struggles to land accurate hits against targets. His strength growth is also poor, though his base is at least decent. His highconstitution growth is also a double-edged sword; on the one hand, this means he will never beweighed down by his weapons, many enemies can'tcapture him (all enemies, if he hits the cap of 20), and can capture/rescue almost anyone in the game. On the other hand, it will be difficult, or outright impossible for his teammates to rescue him. His aforementioned low skill and speed mean he won't do well capturing enemies himself either without significant investment.

Despite these unfortunate shortcomings in Marty's capabilities in the field, he's not completely hopeless. Marty's combat, while it will never be excellent, is salvageable:Crusader Scrolls can mitigate his low growths; the Ced and Od scroll are particularly worthwhile for him to use, as they give a significant boost to his otherwise lacking speed and skill growths respectively. Marty can use theBrave Axe well, patching up his doubling issues, though doing this deprives other units of the weapon. Marty's promotion bonus is also among the best in the game, notably gaining a massive +5 skill and +6 speed. Since these are Marty's two lowest stats, he is in desperate need of increasing them, so he should promote as soon as possible. His promotion also gives him access tobows, granting him easy access to 2-range combat and gives a niche against enemy fliers, especially since ranged axes inThracia consist of the inaccurate and weakHand Axe and the strong but difficult to acquireMaster Axe.

Generally, Marty's greatest contributions will be his ability to take and release captured units and aid in rescue-drop strategies. Later on, mounted units will completely outclass him during outdoor chapters in this role (thanks toCanto and higher movement), but he will at least retain this niche indoors.

Personality

Marty is timid and easily cowed into subservience, and does not appear to particularly enjoy battle. When he was bullied into Gomez's service, he was afraid of encountering his former allies on the battlefield and tried his best to hide his presence from them.[1] He was indecisive when pressured by both sides to join with them, unsure which to fear more, eventually giving in and rejoining Osian solely because of his loud shouting.[2]

Marty - Dagdar's Beloved Man
Returning to Mount Violdrake, Marty reunited with his old friends, and set about restoring the barren land. While somewhat dim-witted, his absentmindedness gave way to a sort of rugged honesty and innocence. His straightforward and uncomplicated nature won him many friends, and he was especially beloved among children.
