Maribelle

|
| “ | I am simply protective of Lissa. My treasure is very sensitive, and... Wait. Am I really justifying myself to a commoner? | ” | — Maribelle, toRobin |
|---|
Maribelle (Japanese:マリマベルMariabell) is aYlissean noblewoman, the daughter of the Duke of Themis,[2] a member of theShepherds and the best friend of PrincessLissa.
Fire Emblem Awakening
Role
Maribelle isFire Emblem Awakening's only player unit that starts by default in theTroubadour class line. She joins inChapter 5, quite early in the game's story. Additionally, she is the mother character ofBrady.
Maribelle initially briefly appears inChapter 2. She is at theShepherds's home base eagerly awaiting on the group's, andLissa's, return. Lissa introduces her toRobin, the Shepherd's new tactician. During the introduction she is flustered byVaike's horsing around and then annoyed byRobin's casual acknowledgment of Vaike's antics. Maribelle stays behind as the group leaves to begin negotiations withFerox.
In the closing events ofChapter 4, afterChrom's return from Ferox.Phila arrives inYlisse with a report toEmmeryn and Chrom that Maribelle has been abducted byPlegian forces. Phila also reports that the Plegian incursion has resulted in the attack of a village in Themis near the southwestern border.Gangrel, the king of Plegia, insists that it is Maribelle that initiated the conflict. Emmeryn acknowledges Chrom's desire to kill Gangrel and be done with the warmongering, but she thinks that starting a war simply means Gangrel wins; the group sets off to parley with the king and discuss the matter.
Thus begins Chapter 5; Emmeryn and Chrom arrive in the wilderness of Themis on the border and Emmeryn announces her intent to negotiate with Gangrel. Gangrel claims that Maribelle attacked Plegian troops unprovoked; Maribelle denies this, instead stating she was defending a village in Themis, on the southwestern border of Ylisse, that Plegian soldiers had razed. Gangrel then requests theFire Emblem in exchange for Maribelle's freedom. Emmeryn asks what Gangrel would want Ylisse's national treasure and he states that he would use it to grant his wish for the destruction of Ylisse; the negotiations then deteriorate into violence. Gangrel also tells Maribelle that she will go down in history for being the one responsible for sparking the war between Plegia and Ylisse.
After the Shepherds drive the Plegians off, Maribelle reunites withLissa. Maribelle then accompanies the Shepherds for the rest of the game, through the war with Plegia and later the war withWalhart.

Analysis
| This character analysis section may not be accurate to every player's experience. |
Maribelle is a level threeTroubadour starting in Chapter 5 ofAwakening. Her stats are to be expected, which are all pretty low across the board. However, she does have high growths in all areas, especially her massive 80% luck growth, but her strength and defense growths are low. Her base D in staves lets her use only basic healing staves, likeHeal andMend. Her mod situation really punishes her in physical stats, with a -3 in both strength and defense, but has decent mods in all other stats. Maribelle's base class of Troubadour does have advantages over the other main healer class, beingLissa'sCleric, where Maribelle can heal allies more quickly with her seven movement compared to Cleric's base five. Maribelle starts with the skillResistance +2 for some extra magical bulk. At level ten she getsDemoiselle, which gives male allies more avoid and crit avoid if they are within three spaces of her.
Maribelle has plenty of great choices for classes. In her base class line, she can promote to the great, high movementValkyrie, continuing to capitalize on her great magical prowess with extra magic and resistance, giving her extra speed for more doubling power, and tome access for easy, immediate damage off her magic stat. This class gives the utility skill ofRally Resistance, and theDual Support+ skill that boost the pair up mechanic depending on her support with other units. Her other promotion from Troubadour isWar Cleric, which considerably less useful. War Cleric gives axes, which Maribelle cannot use well with her poor strength, growth, and base E axes withoutArms Scrolls. However, this class does help alleviate her bulk issues, but not really long-term. While the class does have the amazingRenewal skill, grinding Maribelle to level 15 in this class without heavy investment is not really worth it.Rally Luck is a bit easier to obtain with only needing level 5, but it's generally considered the worst of the rally skills, so it's probably best skipped.
Maribelle has the great reclass option ofMage, allowing her a different way to enter combat using magical damage, which is useful if the player has noMaster Seals to promote her, and instead hasSecond Seals. This class and the promotion ofSage gives some extra damage, accuracy, and physical bulk over Troubadour and Valkyrie, but has less speed, magical bulk, and movement. For Mage's skills,Magic +2 is insignificant in the late game, andFocus is only for when Maribelle is fighting alone, which is a bit risky with Maribelle's general frailty. Sage givesRally Magic for a great support skill to increase other unit's magical damage, andTomefaire gives +5 damage with tomes, making this an excellent skill for several of Maribelle's class choices.Dark Knight is another class that fixes Maribelle's bulk issues, and it's a better class than War Cleric since it can use tomes for damage rather than axes, and has Valkyrie's main trait of high movement.Slow Burn is not a super interesting skill since Maribelle already has a serviceable skill stat and growth, and tomes are relatively accurate.Lifetaker can allow Maribelle to self-heal 50% of her max HP by killing any foe on player phase, no matter how strong.
On the surface,Pegasus Knight is an unappealing choice for a class due to using her low strength stat, but it does give her improvements in many stats except magic, though this is neutered by the fact of being in a physical class, and being forced into E lances for a bit.Speed +2 andRelief are fine skills, but are not worth the reclass. The mostly better stat trend continues forFalcon Knight, where Maribelle gains access to staves, making this class a more mobile healing class since flying classes are unimpeded by terrain unfavorable to ground-locked units. Since Maribelle is generally bad in physical classes, she shouldn't getLancefaire.Rally Speed is pretty easy since it only requires level 5, and she can obtain completely through staff grinding. The real treat of this class tree comes from theDark Flier class in the form ofGaleforce. The Galeforce skill allows units to take another turn if they kill an enemy in their turn, making Maribelle an even more powerful unit.Rally Movement can also break the game by giving units more movement to get to places quicker. Going back to class specifics, Dark Flier is better than Valkyrie in every area statwise factoring in promotion and reclass bonuses, though Valkyrie does have higher speed and resistance caps than Dark Flier. While Dark Flier is good for its high, unimpeded movement, just like with Falcon Knight, Maribelle won't make good use of lances, meaning Valkyrie is generally the better class with its staff access.
For her sonBrady, regardless of the father, she can pass down Galeforce so that he can take another turn if he defeats an enemy. For the choice of fathers, she can marry a magically-oriented husband likeRicken,Henry, orLibra to make Brady a magical powerhouse as aSage orSorcerer. She can also choose to marry a physical husband to make Brady a hybrid between physical and magical attacks, solidifying his place as aWar Monk,Dark Knight, orTrickster.

Personality

Maribelle considers her status as noble to be of great importance. She often cites her nobility and questions why she should have to justify herself to those lower than her. She does seem to be at least somewhat self-aware of how snobbish she acts but even after realizing it she tends to slip back into her typical demeanor. She also values her own and the appearance of other nobles; often making offhand comments that certain extreme expressions will result in wrinkles and other minor imperfections.
Despite her often rudeness to those of a lower station; she still upholds high moral values equally, even reprimandingVaike for wagering withChrom over a simple apple. She also admits to enjoying and appreciating the company of commoners when she loses a bet with Vaike.
Maribelle holds great affection forLissa. She eagerly declares that she will lay down her life for Lissa, to Lissa's perturbation. Maribelle's attachment to Lissa stems from the fact that Lissa was her only friend in their younger years; Maribelle's attitude did not foster friendships with nobles, much less commoners.
As one might think, she is greatly frustrated by her son's,Brady's, rough appearance and manner of speech. She often attempted to teach him to speak and hold himself like a noble. Despite their disagreements, Brady attempts to learn proper speech in secret to impress his mother; eventually succeeding in speaking like a noble. Maribelle then admits that the high manner of speech does not truly fit him and he is happy that his mother accepts that it isn't for him.
