Marianne von Edmund (pronounced /mɛri'æn vɑn 'ɛdmʌnd/[key]; Japanese:マリアンヌ=フォン=エドマンドMarianne von Edmund) is a playable character appearing inFire Emblem: Three Houses. She is a member of theGolden Deer house at the Officers Academy.
Biography
Marianne was born in a family descended fromMaurice, who bore a cursed Crest. Her father told her to stay away from people as she had a curse that would turn her into a beast at night, and that her Crest brought misfortune to everyone she interacted with. As such, Marianne chose to stay away from people and preferred to talk to animals, particularly birds and horses. Sometime later in her life, she was adopted by Margrave Edmund, a Lord of the Alliance, who raised her as his daughter. She then enrolled at the Officers Academy atGarreg Mach and her adoptive father forbade her from leaving the monastery for too long so as to protect her while he looked for a rich noble to marry her. Marianne joins the Golden Deer house, studying and fighting alongside them over the next year.
After the timeskip, if Marianne is a member ofByleth's class, she returns to Garreg Mach Monastery on the day of the millennium festival and accompanies them throughout the war. Otherwise, she makes no further storyline appearances on any of the four routes.

Analysis
| This character analysis section may not be accurate to every player's experience. |
Marianne is aMagic-focused unit possessing great growths in Magic andResistance, a good growth inSpeed and poor growths inHP,Strength andDefense. Marianne has an affinity inFaith magic and learns goodwhite andblack magic spells, enabling her to fulfill both offensive and supportive roles with her magic. At C Reason, Marianne unlocksThoron, allowing her to attack at three-range without boosts from equipment; at A, she learns the high-critFimbulvetr and is the only unit with strong magic to do so aside fromConstance. At C Faith, Marianne learnsPhysic; at B, she learnsSilence, which—though niche—can make enemy phase safer for units with low Resistance. Additionally, at A Faith, Marianne learnsAura, a powerful offensive white-magic spell with a high crit rate. Another of Marianne's strengths is her high base Faith level of D+, the highest in the early game; D+ grants her immediate access toHeal andNosferatu, as well as very early access to Physic at C, allowing her to quickly excel in a support role.
Marianne's notablecombat arts areSoulblade (which she learns at C+swords) andFrozen Lance (which she learns from her budding talent inlances); she can typically deal more damage with these arts than with her spells. However, both arts are limited to 1-range, requiring Marianne to reach the front lines with the low movement of early-game magic classes and potentially exposing her to attacks she could not otherwise take. Despite being ill-suited for the front lines, Marianne is able to consistently contribute with her excellent spells.
Marianne bears aMinor Crest of the Beast, which occasionally boosts her might by 5 when using a weapon; this effect provides little benefit to Marianne, as she infrequently attacks with weapons, and its activation rate of 20% is unreliable for when she does. The Crest of the Beast also grants herBeast Fang, the exclusive melee-range combat art of the magicalRelic swordBlutgang. Despite its high damage, it is locked to 1-range, meaning it has the same weakness as her other magical combat arts.
Marianne's personal skill,Animal Friend, is basicallyRenewal with an activation condition of needing to be next to a cavalry or flying ally. If Marianne is in a class with low movement, she will lag behind mounted allies unless they are held back, limiting how often it can activate; moreover, Marianne's low HP limits the amount the skill recovers. However, the skill does not come at the expense of any other skills and is, at worst, irrelevant to Marianne's performance.
The utility of Marianne's spell list and her good Magic growth make her best suited for magic-enabled classes. Her best promotion path isMonk toMage, where she can master the class forFiendish Blow. Afterwards,Warlock provides the best damage output, whileBishop provides the best utility. As for her master class, Marianne will benefit the most from promoting intoDark Knight forCanto andBlack Tomefaire, or toGremory to double all of her spell uses; Bishop as is functions adequately as a final class, asWhite Magic Uses x2 andWhite Magic Heal +10 still make her a valuable support unit. While Marianne can easily accessHoly Knight with her boons in Riding, Faith and (through her budding talent) lances,White Tomefaire only strengthens her two offensive white magic spells; Holy Knight does not boost the damage of as many spells as Dark Knight does with Black Tomefaire, nor does it double the uses of any spells like Gremory or strengthen her utility spells like Bishop. With DLC, Marianne can easily reach theValkyrie andDark Flier classes, which are also excellent final classes; both pack higher movement compared to infantry magic classes, as well as useful abilities to strengthen Marianne's combat ability. As Marianne is one of the only magically-inclined units with a Flying boon, Dark Flier particularly stands out as a final class given her lack of competition.
Recruiting for Other Routes
When recruited in Part I, Marianne will come having received tutoring inswords and Faith. Due to this automatic tutoring, Marianne is already well on her way to Bishop and can instantly fulfill a supportive role. Her recruitment requirements of 10 Magic and C Riding are relatively low, and her Riding requirement overlaps withPetra's. However, Marianne's spell list is not wholly unique to her, and she provides little that cannot be replicated by other units—many units have Physic;Dorothea has Thoron, and many units can attack from 3-range withbows;Mercedes has both Physic andFortify; and so on. Moreover, since she does not receive automatic tutoring in reason, starting with a base level of E, accessing her offensive spells takes a considerable amount of investment on the player's part. This problem is somewhat alleviated if Marianne is recruited between Chapters 3 and 5, as she will then start with D-rank reason andBlizzard, however. Moreover, Marianne grants access to the paralogueForgotten Hero in Part II, from which Blutgang is obtained, potentially justifying her recruitment. If you choose to do this,Trickster is a class worth considering; while Trickster is normally sub-optimal due to halving her magic casts, her paralogue takes place in a forest where having 5 movement unimpeded by the trees will greatly help in getting her out of danger.

Marianne does not interact with others very often, to the point where some have never even heard her voice. She pushes them away since she believes that her crest brings bad luck. Some people really do not like this superstition, such as Leonie when she got very mad when Marianne told her to go away after receiving an invite to go to town. She loves birds and animals. She is deeply religious, and prays to the Goddess every day.

Endings
Marianne, Survivor of the Curse (single ending)
Marianne returned home to a hero's welcome. The people praised her talent and acknowledged her as a savior of Fódlan. Her adoptive father groomed her as his successor, teaching her the power of words over weapons. By the time she claimed her inheritance, she had transformed into one of Fódlan's most skilled orators.
Byleth, Wandering Flame/Ruler of Dawn & Marianne, Survivor of the Curse (Silver Snow, Verdant Wind)
Byleth announced an engagement to Marianne shortly after being named leader of the United Kingdom of Fódlan. Before they were officially wed, Marianne first returned home to prepare for the ceremony and to study oration and management under her adoptive father. She returned under the Great Tree Moon, and became queen of a restored Fódlan in a grand wedding. The kingdom experienced remarkable growth thereafter, and while Byleth became known as a leader of incredible wisdom, few people of the time understood the depth of the queen's influence.
Byleth, Guardian of Order & Marianne, Survivor of the Curse (Azure Moon)
Byleth announced an engagement to Marianne shortly after being named archbishop of the Church of Seiros. Before they were officially wed, Marianne first returned home to prepare for the ceremony and to study oration and management under her adoptive father. She returned under the Great Tree Moon, and became the archbishop's wife in a grand wedding. The Kingdom experienced remarkable growth thereafter, thanks to the church, and while the archbishop became known for his incredible wisdom, few people of the time understood the depth of his wife's influence.
Byleth, Wings of the Hegemon & Marianne, Survivor of the Curse (Crimson Flower)
Almost immediately after Byleth and Marianne had celebrated their engagement, the struggle against those who slither in the dark began in earnest. Together they fought tirelessly to bring the war to an end so that Fódlan could have lasting peace. Afterwards, they left the Imperial army and were officially wed in Edmund territory. In time, the pair grew into first-rate politicians under the tutelage of Margrave Edmund himself. With the emperor's blessing, they annexed part of Riegan territory, including Derdriu, and used their influence to improve relations and expand trade with foreign nations. Their work greatly contributed to the restoration of the Empire.
Dimitri, Savior King & Marianne, Survivor of the Curse
Dimitri assumed the throne of the Holy Kingdom of Faerghus and spent his life ruling justly over Fódlan. Several years after his coronation, he took Marianne, whom he loved dearly, as his queen. Many of Dimitri's greatest achievements can be traced to wisdom provided by Marianne, who had received tutelage from her adoptive father, Margrave Edmund. Many years later, when Dimitri fell to illness, he clutched his queen's hand until the very end. The queen's journal, uncovered after her passing, contained recounts of their time together. The last words, penned with trembling hand, are: "I would not trade our time together or the happiness we knew for anything."
Claude, King of Unification & Marianne, Survivor of the Curse
Entrusting the future of Fódlan to his friends, Claude left for Almyra to reclaim his place as heir to the throne. Several years later, when he became king, he took initial steps to open trade routes with Fódlan, and entered into negotiations with Margrave Edmund. During this time, he was reunited with Marianne, who had grown under her adoptive father's guidance into a wise and talented woman. She offered him her aid, and as they worked together to secure friendly relations between their respective nations, they fell deeply in love.
Ferdinand, Noblest of Nobles & Marianne, Survivor of the Curse (Silver Snow, Azure Moon, Verdant Wind)
Ferdinand announced his marriage to Marianne just after becoming the new Duke Aegir. With the support of Margrave Edmund, they set to work restoring Aegir territory. The support of Marianne's adoptive father was essential, but not sufficient, for the relief effort. As more difficulties arose, Marianne herself took on an increasing amount of responsibility. She proved quite capable and dedicated, and the Dukedom progressed through a steady recovery under the couple's collective efforts. It is said that Ferdinand commissioned a bronze statue of his wife to honor her achievements, but Marianne ordered it to be hidden away in storage for eternity.
Ferdinand, Noblest of Nobles & Marianne, Survivor of the Curse (Crimson Flower)
Ferdinand announced his engagement to Marianne just after becoming the new Duke Aegir. While he got started restoring his territory, Marianne returned home to study politics under her shrewd adoptive father. When she returned to Ferdinand's side, they were wed, and with her new skills she proved herself to be an asset to the rebuilding effort. Aegir territory flourished under their reign, becoming one of the most prosperous regions in all Fódlan. It is said that Ferdinand commissioned a bronze statue of his wife to honor her, but that Marianne ordered it to be hidden away in storage for eternity.
Linhardt, Sleepy Crest Scholar & Marianne, Survivor of the Curse
Marianne returned home to a warm welcome from her adoptive father, who recognized her wisdom and skill and began to groom her as his successor. Meanwhile, Linhardt abandoned his noble claim, and happened to choose Margrave Edmund's territory as the site at which to continue his Crest research. Edmund took a liking to Linhardt and approved wholeheartedly when the scholar and his daughter expressed their wish to marry. As Edmund's successors, the couple combined Linhardt's brilliance with Marianne's practical wisdom to bring abundance to the people.
Ashe, Arrow of Justice & Marianne, Survivor of the Curse
After the war, Ashe was formally knighted, and appointed the new head of House Gaspard, which had no successors. The young and inexperienced lord faced a great deal of difficulty in governing, until his court was blessed with a new adviser in Marianne. Using skills imparted to her by her adoptive father, Marianne helped Ashe to solidify his position. As the prosperity of Gaspard territory grew, so did a love between them, and soon Margrave Edmund saw fit to bless the couple's happy marriage. Years later, Ashe asked Marianne what made her choose to help him in the first place. She simply smiled and said that she decided to make supporting him her dream.
Lorenz, Noble of the Red Rose & Marianne, Survivor of the Curse
As the new head of House Gloucester, Lorenz first worked to restore his own territory, and then expanded his vision to include reforms for all Fódlan. At the height of his storied political career, he announced his marriage to Marianne. Prior to the wedding, she received extensive tutelage from her adoptive father, Margrave Edmund, so that by the time they were wed she was fully prepared to govern. The pair was particularly successful in providing new innovations in dairy farming, and came to be known as the mother and father of horses and cattle in the region. It is said that Lorenz was rather vexed by the title.
Raphael, Beast of Leicester & Marianne, Survivor of the Curse
Raphael returned to his hometown, where he served his liege lord as a knight for a time. Later, he gave it up to pursue his true passion of food by opening up an inn. He got the idea to install a bird feeder outside the place, calling it The Winged Inn & Tavern, and before long, the site began to attract the prettiest birds in the region. Soon after that, Marianne made her first visit, and she and Raphael enjoyed a happy reunion. Seeing her gift in talking to the birds, he invited her to stay. Marianne eventually became known as the woman whose talent for handling animals helped an inn to flourish.
Ignatz, Worldly Artist & Marianne, Survivor of the Curse
Marianne returned home to a warm welcome from her adoptive father, who recognized her wisdom and skill and began to groom her as his successor. During that time, she had a chance reunion with Ignatz, who had persuaded his family to allow him to travel the world as an artist. Marianne wholeheartedly supported his work, and before long, came to be enchanted not merely by the landscapes and portraits of all he had seen in his travels, but also by his character. The romance between artist and patron was considered unusual, but long after their wedding, the story of how they fell in love was immortalized in popular plays.
Marianne, Survivor of the Curse & Hilda, Free Spirit
After returning to their respective homes, Hilda and Marianne stayed in touch and deepened their friendship through letters. Hilda informed Marianne that her passion for crafting fashionable accessories had given her the idea to start an artisan academy, and in response, Marianne pledged the financial support of the house of Margrave Edmund. Soon, artisan schools began to appear all over Fódlan, producing talented craftsmen and high-quality trade goods, which contributed greatly to the prosperity of Fódlan. The accessories sent to Marianne personally by Hilda became some of the most highly valued treasures in history.
Marianne, Survivor of the Curse & Hanneman, Father of Crestology
After the war, Marianne and Hanneman stayed in touch and deepened their friendship through letters. When Hanneman's Crest research fell on hard times, Marianne was able to secure Margrave Edmund's financial support to allow his work to continue. The research bore fruit in the form of magical tools which could be used even without the aid of Crests, and the funding allowed these tools to be produced in great number. After Marianne inherited her adoptive father's house, she guided Hanneman to create a branch of research devoted to peaceful applications of Crestology. These advancements, which Hanneman provided, became the legacy of Marianne's later years.
