— Manfroy, revealing the completion of his plan toSeliph

Manfroy (Japanese:マンフロイManfroy) was the Archbishop of theLoptr Church, the cult descended from the remnants of theLoptrian Empire. Manfroy was the chief architect of the cult's plot to resurrect their dark god,Loptous, and under his direction the Loptrians plunged the kingdom ofGrannvale into war with the other nations and its transformation into the Grannvale Empire under EmperorArvis. When the Loptous-possessed PrinceJulius wrested control of Grannvale from his father, Manfroy acted as an advisor and confidante to the prince.

Biography

Schemes across Jugdral

At some point in his life, Manfroy had a daughter. This daughter married a man of whom Manfroy disapproved, and so Manfroy killed him. The child from this marrage—his granddaughter—wasSara, who thoroughly despises Manfroy for killing her father; nonetheless, she lived most of her life with the Loptrians until encounteringLeif.

Prior to Grann 757, Manfroy initiated his plan to resurrect Loptous. Having learned ofArvis's status as a descendant ofMaera, he blackmailed him into complying with his plans, although he never informed Arvis of much of its detail.[1] He also manipulated PrinceChagall ofAgustria into killing his fatherImca, ascending the throne himself and declaring war on Grannvale, with the promise of power over the entire world.[2] During the latter part of the Grannvale war with Agustria, Manfroy located and abductedDeirdre, wiped her memory and left her to be found by Arvis, eventually leading to the two's marriage according to his plans. Manfroy was also present at theBattle of Belhalla, and in it personally killed PrinceLewyn ofSilesse.

Rise of Julius

The aftermath of the Battle of Belhalla left everything according to Manfroy's plan: almost the entirety of Jugdral was now under the control of Grannvale, itself under Arvis's rule, and Arvis and Deirdre gave birth toJulius, a bearer of major Loptous holy blood and the culmination of Manfroy's ambition. After givingthe Book of Loptous to Julius and instigating Loptous's possession of him, Manfroy became something of an advisor to the prince and assisted with the facilitation of the business of running the Grannvale Empire, appointing Loptrian priests as officials of the state, and aided its slow perversion into the darker activities of the ancient Loptrian Empire he sought to restore.

In Grann 776, Manfroy made two visits to theMunster District to confer withVeld, a subordinate overseeing Loptrian operations in the region. The first time he visited for a conference in the bowels of Munster Castle's dungeon, along with Julius and his fiancéeIshtar, unknowingly duringLeif's escape from imprisonment there. In the second time, he visited the hidden Loptrian temple in the region to scold Veld for his failures againstLeif's liberation army near his war's conclusion, entrusting him with fiveDeadlords he created himself in a final bid to defeat Leif.

Near the end ofSeliph's liberation war, Manfroy travelled to Peruluke Castle inMiletos and abductedJulia, Julius's twin sister and the sole power capable of defeating Julius. Despite Julius's wishes to have her killed outright, Manfroy instead brainwashed her into fighting under his command during the final battle against Seliph in Grannvale, where Manfroy guardedVelthomer Castle. Manfroy can possibly be killed in this battle, freeing Julia from his control. If Manfroy is not killed, he will die upon Julius's death due to Loptous's power leaving the world.

Fire Emblem: Genealogy of the Holy War

Role

Manfroy is a boss inthe Endgame ofGenealogy of the Holy War, acting as the guardian ofVelthomer Castle. While his defeat is technically optional, doing so allowsJulia to be re-recruited and thus drastically simplifies defeatingJulius atBelhalla.

Battle quotes

You fools! How dare you... All my life I've toiled for this moment... I'll show you no mercy!
— Manfroy, inthe Endgame ofGenealogy of the Holy War.
Manfroy: Kehehe... You've come at last! I've been awaiting you for a long time.
Seliph: Manfroy! It was you who cursed Julia, was it not?
Manfroy: So I did. And so long as I live, my puppet she shall remain! Hee hee hee! She's every bit as helpless before my magic as her mother was...
Seliph: I should have known. If not for you, Mother... Gah! All of this misery... All these agonizing years... It was all your doing from the outset!
Manfroy: Heh... You've realized at long last. Everything I've done has led to this moment: the revival of my lord Loptous. And at long last, it is so! Loptous's advent in the form of Prince Julius is complete, and darkness shall soon engulf the world. You cannot prevent it. Nobody can...
Seliph: Manfroy, you... Father's grief... Mother's despair... If not for you and your foul ambitions, none of this would have ever happened... Damn you, Manfroy! I cannot allow you to win... I will not... You'll NEVER know mercy for your crimes!

— Manfroy, fightingSeliph in the Endgame ofGenealogy of the Holy War.

Manfroy: Why, of course. As a bearer of the dark one's blood, what choice does he have? Not even one of Arvis' stature can afford the wider world learning of his dark heritage, lest he be burned at the stake. Could a man as prideful as Arvis bear to meet such an end?

Manfroy: Remember, Grannvale still adheres to that tawdry old peace treaty with you, and their entire army is distracted in Isaach. Strike now, and you could not possibly fail.
