Fire Emblem Echoes: Shadows of Valentia
Role
Mae, likeBoey, acts as one of Celica's personal guards on her journey to the Temple of Mila, with her role being expanded upon greatly in comparison to Fire Emblem Gaiden. Throughout their journey, Mae acts as a sort of confidant to Celica. During the events of Act Four, Celica makes her intention of sacrificing herself known, and Mae quickly objects to this. After, Mae and the rest of Celica's party are warped away by Jedah, being forced to fight their way through Terrors. Mae, alongside the rest of the previously-lost party, reunites with Celica immediately before the final fight of Act Five, having been guided to her by the voice of Mila.

Analysis
| This character analysis section may not be accurate to every player's experience. |
Mae is available inCelica's army from the start of Celica's route, and alongside Celica and Boey can be one of Act 2's offensive juggernauts, as if she is given shrine boosts she can become powerful enough to one-round almost every Brigand through the rest of the Act. She has poor durability, and in comparison to Boey, she also has worse skill, but she's faster, has even better attack than him and has immediate access toThunder, which has extra crit and 3-range, while he won't get it until two levels later. With one extra point of speed, she will be able to double or speed-tie every Brigand in Act 2 (except Barth), and with a couple of levels she can get one more point of speed to double those she ties. Mae can generally double every enemy except Mercenaries thanks to her speed after she gets rolling. Mae's damage is consistently excellent as well, to the extent that she is one of the few units who can deal significant damage to Jedah, and she learnsAura at level 9 andSeraphim at level 14, the latter making her great againstFiends, which few units can one-round.
After promotion, Mae gains access to swords,Recover, and at level 6,Silence. Swords can allow her to double enemy Mercenaries depending on her speed and bypass an opponent's resistance stat if their defense is lower, though she won't deal as much damage on non-magical enemies, especially on enemy phase. Recover has usage as a healing spell, but Celica andGenny are both in the same army as Mae and can both heal. Promotion also significantly improves her durability, especially if she can do so in late Act 2/early Act 3.
Mae's main issues are her low durability and her late promotion level. Her low defense can be mitigated to some degree by equipping defensive equipment such as theLeather Shield, and as mentioned, after she promotes, her durability will be on par with the rest of the army until Act 4 where it begins to fall behind again. Mae requires a lot of experience to promote, as she needs to reach level 14 to promote, which is very late. Even Boey, whose promotion requires a high level, can promote at level 12 instead. She can still promote by the end of Act 2 if given the three experience shrines inSeabound Shrine, though even then she may require additional grinding. She also has movement issues due to terrain, though getting her into action during Act 3 is still possible. Her damage output can also be detrimental if the player wants to train other units, as she will struggle tonot kill enemies to feed the kill to someone else.
Overall, if invested into, Mae can become a powerhouse during Act 2, able to reliably reach the thresholds to one-round enemies through Act 2 and Act 3, and even if she is not the main mage of Celica's side she still deals decent early chip damage. Her main competition for this is Boey, who has better durability and requires less experience, but both units are equally viable as Act 2's main carries.

Mae/Heroes
There are two different variations of Mae available inHeroes.
Personality
Mae is an upbeat and energetic girl who is implied to be Celica's closest friend from the priory. Despite their difference in background, with Celica being royalty and Mae being a commoner, Mae is completely relaxed and casual around Celica, calling her by name as opposed to Boey's more formal "milady." Both Mae and Celica share a close relationship, with each acting as a confidant for the other. During her final base conversation, Mae mentions to Celica that she's always there for her if Celica needs to get something off her chest. Likewise, in their support conversations, Mae confides in Celica her self-image issues. She worried that her personality might make her seem childish instead of womanly. In particular, she worries that Boey doesn't see her as a woman (though she doesn't confirm who she's talking about to Celica herself). Celica's opinion clearly matters to Mae, as she becomes at ease when Celica reassures her.
In her C Support with Boey, she mentions that she'd never thought she'd see combat, despite knowing that it was always a possibility if it meant protecting Celica. This once more showcases her more positive and optimistic nature, while also not compromising her duties to Celica. Mae is also shown to be slightly scatterbrained at times, as shown when discussing how the Masked Knight's personality seems to shift depending on whether or not he's wearing the mask, only for Boey to point out that that's the point of the disguise in the first place.
Mae's relationship with Boey is founded on rivalry, though it eventually blossoms into mutual romance. Mae is quick to remind Boey of his faults when he boasts, such as his fear of Terrors or his initial lack of magical aptitude, and often teases him throughout the story. In their A Support, the two of them come to realize their mutual feelings for one another, and in the epilogue it's revealed that the two got married and had many children at some point in time after the events of the game.

If Boey died
After the loss of her verbal sparring partner, Boey, Mae fell into a deep depression—but the encouragement of her friends eventually helped light return to her life. She spent her days helping others at the priory, where she was beloved for her kindness and wicked humor.
