Archanea has nothing left for me. For the justice that I believe in, allow me to fight by your side again, Prince Marth.
— Macellan

Macellan (Japanese:ミシェランMishelan) is a knight of theHoly Kingdom of Archanea. He was one of the retinue of knights who assisted in PrincessNyna's doomed escape attempt fromPalace at the onset of theWar of Shadows, and was captured and imprisoned for the rest of the war, until Nyna returned withMarth's forces to reclaim Palace. After the war, he departed the Archanean army to form a band of border watchmen; in theWar of Heroes, he travelled toAltea to offer his assistance to Marth in reclaiming the castle.

Analysis

This character analysis section may not be accurate to every player's experience.

Macellan is unlocked alongside another very similarKnight,Dolph, inChapter 12; Macellan is statistically worse than Dolph in every stat besides a 1 point advantage in hisluck base. Even ignoring the fact there is another very similar character that is better in every way, Macellan is simply horrendous. Hisspeed is so low—3 base and 20% growth—that he will get doubled by practically everything in the game. Hisstrength is very mediocre for a character recruited fairly late into the game. Hisweapon level is too low to use strong weapons likeSilver Swords orLevin Swords. Hisskill, luck, and evenHP are similarly mediocre. His strongest base stat, hisdefense, is the same asDraug's, a Knight recruited inChapter 1. He also has the same flaw universal to Knights andGenerals: an abysmal 5 movement and no ability toclass change.

Whilst Macellan has some utility in tanking hits from enemy archers in Chapter 12, even amongst the game's weak class of Knight, Macellan stands out as below average. If you really want to use a knight, Draug, Dolph, and Roger are better options that are obtained at the same time or earlier. Macellan should only be used if most of your units have already died or if you really like the character.

InMystery of the Emblem, promotion gains for HP and weapon level consist of giving the character as many points as necessary—thex value shown in the table—to reach the promoted class's base value. If the character's value for one of those two stats is higher than their promoted class's base value, they will not receive any bonus in that stat.

Analysis

This character analysis section may not be accurate to every player's experience.

Macellan joins in Chapter 12 with the dubious distinction of being perhaps the worst unit available in Book 1. One immediate problem with Macellan is that the Armored Knight class is a very bad class to be in, most obviously for having 5Movement, which is tied with Clerics and Archers for the lowest in the game. In outdoor maps where you can field Paladins and Dracoknights with 10 movement this is laughably paltry, and even on indoor maps it is a sizable disadvantage to overcome compared to his abundant 6 and 7 move counterparts. Unfortunately for Macellan, his combat utility provides very little to compensate. HisStrength of 8 is decent, but with a Weapon Level of 5 and access only to lances he cannot complement this strength with any strong weapons, missing out on the powerfulSilver Lance and the many powerful swords and bows many contemporaries can use. Being lance-locked also intensifies his critical weakness of abysmalSpeed, with a base of 3. The lightest lances weigh 6, meaning he will always have 0 AS until he gets 4 points in speed. With a 20% growth he will not crawl out of this pit anytime soon. This critical speed problem makes his offense anemic, as he cannot double even the slowest enemies without an immense level of investment, and any enemy with at least 3 AS doubling him. Even his defense, which at first glance seems like a strength thanks to his high base defense of 12, is highly questionable. Because he will be doubled so often, he is in practice frailer than many units with less defense who do not have this speed problem. His mediocre HP of 20 does not help matters, and with a Resistance of 0 he is highly susceptible to magical attacks. Attempting to promote him is also largely detrimental as it requires both investing at least 6 levels into this terrible unit, and it deprives you of a Knight Crest that can also be used to promote juggernauts like Abel, Cain, and Hardin. Even if given such favoritism to reach promotion, his contributions would still be niche at best as he remains with only 5 movement. Altogether Macellan offers practically zero utility, with little incentive to deploy him outside of personal affinity for his character.

Fire Emblem: Archanea Saga

Role

When the army of Dolhr came to lay siege to Palace at the onset of the War of Shadows, Macellan was part of the band of knights convened by Boah to lead Princess Nyna to safety. The group was instead cornered by Dolhr's forces and was forced to try and fight its way out. In the end, they were defeated and captured upon the arrival ofCamus, and were imprisoned in the palace, where they remained for three years until Marth arrived with Nyna.

Analysis

This character analysis section may not be accurate to every player's experience.

Macellan joins in Chapter 12 ofShadow Dragon as a level 3Knight. His base stats are poor except for defense, and he will get doubled by all enemies in higher difficulties. Macellan only has a D level in lances, so he has no access to effective lances like theRidersbane andDragonpike without investment.

Macellan is seven levels away from promotion, and he struggles to reach and defeat enemies as a Knight. His growth rates are decent and they can be improved throughreclassing, but he will have E in every weapon type other than lances, and will struggle to contribute anything. Other units have better weapon ranks, access to multiple weapon types, higher levels, and better stats than Macellan, likely multiple chapters before he is recruited.

Personality

Macellan's personality receives almost no exploration inFire Emblem: Shadow Dragon & the Blade of Light and its sequels and remakes. However, his death quotes imply he is strongly loyal to PrincessNyna.Fire Emblem: New Mystery of the Emblem gives slightly more insight into his character; he has a strong enough sense of justice to desertHardin when he becomes a tyrant, and he enjoys cooking.
