Louis (pronounced /⁠ˈlu.i⁠/^[key]^[3]; Japanese:ルイLouis) is a royal knight ofFirene and retainer to PrincessCéline, alongsideChloé. Growing up as a commoner in a grape-growing village, he chose to become a knight to provide for his three younger brothers. After being ambushed atFlorra Mill Town, he and Chloé fought to cover their lady's escape.

Biography

Main story

Louis was born as aFirenese commoner in a town known for its grapes, and the eldest of four brothers. When he was still young, his mother died prematurely, devastating Louis and leaving his family without a parental figure in their household, as his father worked to provide for the family. Because of this, Louis was tasked with taking care of his younger brothers, raising them by himself.^[4] By necessity, he developed a sizable amount of domestic skills—notably including tea brewing, often providing his family with black tea steeped in grape juice.^[5]^[6] He grew up without a notable female presence in his life, whether family or friend.^[7]

As he grew older, he began to look for ways to provide for his brothers; first selling grape drinks and candies,^[8] before ultimately setting his sights on knighthood.^[1] During the knighthood exam, he treated everyone to tea, which highlighted his domestic skills.^[9] He passed the exam and, due to his exemplary talents being recognized byCéline, became her retainer alongsideChloé, which was a notable achievement as he was not of Firenese nobility.^[10]

When theElusian army attackedFirene Castle, he and Chloé accompanied Céline toFlorra Port, ordered by Queen Ève to warn Prince Alfred of the attack, but were ambushed in town by an army ofCorrupted led by GeneralRodine. Both retainers chose to stay behind to cover their lady’s escape, who—after encounteringAlear and their army—returned and helped them defeat the Elusian army. Louis joined the Divine Dragon’s army afterward, fighting in the war againstSombron. After the war concluded, he retired as a knight and instead continued serving the royal family as their butler.

Fell Xenologue

Like his main counterpart, the Louis from another world served as Princess Céline's retainer, retaining his tea-serving habit.^[11] During the second war against Sombron, Louis fought alongside the Divine Dragon's army but, despite believing in their success, died during the final day of the war.^[12]

Fire Emblem Engage

Role

Louis is a playable character. He joins automatically on turn 1 ofChapter 4, during which he andChloé are isolated from the main army on the center of the map. His personal skill,Admiration, allows him to take 2 less damage when in a 2-tile radius of two female allies who are adjacent to each other.

Analysis

This character analysis section may not be accurate to every player's experience.

Louis is the firstLance Armor unit that joins the player's army and he joins inChapter 4. As an armor unit Louis joins with high base stats in HP, strength, defense and dexterity, but low bases in magic, speed, luck and resistance. Along with that Louis boasts a low personal build of 1, with his starting class boosting his build stat to the point he isn't weighed down by hisIron Lance, however due to his low speed Louis can manage being weighed down by heavier weapons as he will likely be getting doubled by enemies regardless of his weaponry. Louis's growths are mainly focused on HP, defense and strength, with low personal growths in other areas. Louis joins with a proficiency in lances, along with a B rank in said weapon type giving him access to a large number of powerful lances, such as theSilver Lance for 0 investment.

Due to starting in the armor class Louis gets the privilege of not getting afflicted by theBreak status effect when a foe initiates combat and damages him while he's suffering fromweapon triangle disadvantage. Louis can still be afflicted by the Break status effect fromSmash weapons and theFracture staff. This ability combined with Louis's unrivaled physical bulk in his joining chapter makes Louis one of the most valuable playable units in the earlygame. As aside fromVander playable units take high damage, Louis is able to take multiple physical foes on enemy phase and either kill them or cripple them to the point other units can finish them off. Along with this, unlike in most games in the series, the armor knight classline doesn't suffer from lower movement as most starting classes only start with 4 move, meaning that Louis won't be left behind by his fellow teammates. Finally, Louis's personal skill,Admiration, reduces the damage he takes if two female allies are adjacent within 2 spaces, further bolstering his durability.

Louis also has just enough speed to avoid getting doubled by certain earlygame enemies.Nelucce in particular is a powerful boss who won't be able to double attack Louis even on the Maddening difficulty mode. However, while his utility on Maddening is incredibly useful, Maddening mode simultaneously changes the AI of enemies so that they won't attack enemies they cannot damage, meaning that Louis will oftentimes get ignored by enemies. Along with that Louis is incredibly vulnerable too magic, often being one rounded by mages due to his poor resistance. As such, Louis requires careful positioning to use properly.

On the topic ofEmblem Rings, Louis's best option isSigurd, due to Sigurd fixing his mobility issues and giving Louis the ability to inherit the valuable skillsHit + andCanter.Ike is another option as it pairs well with Louis's natural bulk,Laguz Friend boosts his durability even further,Great Aether is an excellent crowd-clearing Engage attack and the skillReposition gives Louis extra utility.

Despite Louis's excellent earlygame, he noticeably falters during the midgame and lategame. This is due to the fact that his best Emblem Ring option, Sigurd, disappears afterChapter 10 and doesn't rejoin untilChapter 17, meaning that Louis will be without a strong ring for 6 chapters. Along with that, the player gets access to strong physical units likePanette as the game progresses in combination with inheriting certain skills, such as Vantage that give them a stronger enemy phase. While Louis's physical durability will still be amazing even in the final chapters, Louis's enemy phase will be vulnerable as enemies will start stackingchain attacks, which are always guaranteed to deal 3 damage wearing Louis down if he's not equipped with thePair Up skill fromCorrin, a skill that's fairly costly and requires a bond level of 13 with Corrin. Finally, in chapter 11, the player gets access toLucina and her Engage skillBonded Shield which nullifies the damage dealt by the first attack made against adjacent allies. This skill adds significantly survivability to even the squishier units if set up properly, giving less room for Louis's physical durability to shine.

In terms of promotion Louis has the options of promoting to theGeneral class for slightly higher bulk, strength and S rank in lances, or theGreat Knight class for additional mobility and higher overall stats. The General class doesn't improve Louis stats much with only a negligible +1 defense and +3 strength stat over Great Knight, in addition to having terrible movement, keeping him at 4 move, which makes Great Knight the superior choice in almost all circumstances.

In terms of reclassing, Louis can function well in the Paladin classline due to the higher movement compared to Great Knight, while also letting Louis keep using lances.Wyvern Knight is another powerful option as it gives Louis flying utility while still maintaining his physical durability.

Overall, Louis is an incredibly potent unit in the harsh earlygame ofEngage, however, as the game progresses and the enemies get stronger, while the player gets additional units and resources, Louis has trouble keeping up with the rest of the player's army. If Louis does get additional resources, he can still be a useful lategame unit, but he requires more resources compared to his competition.

There is one variation of Louis available inHeroes.

Personality

Louis is a courteous and polite person, happy to offer his services should others need them.^[13] He has a cheerful demeanor^[14] which he maintains whether praised^[15] or critiqued,^[16] and is easily amused by simple joys in life.^[17] He enjoys sharing in happy company,^[18] pleased to see the smiles of others^[19]^[20] and quick to throw out a compliment,^[21] though he is humble when receiving them himself. He also feels a strong impulse to care for his allies, which he believes originally came from him raising his three younger brothers.^[4] However, by taking on the role of servant, Louis finds it difficult to see himself as just as important as others,^[22]^[23] believing that he must merely facilitate the happiness of others instead of partaking in it with them.^[24] He puts the needs of others before his own, even if fulfilling those needs may end up hurting him.^[25] Due to his upbringing, he is not particularly religious^[26] and is amazed by the strong women in Elyos,^[27] having lacked a strong female presence in his life after the departure of his mother.^[7]

He is an avid enjoyer of people-watching, studying the behavior of those he observes^[28] and enraptured by bearing witness to many unique dynamics unfolding before his eyes,^[29]^[30] to the point where he will set up meetings between people just to observe how their conversations unfold.^[31]^[32] He likens the act of conversation between others to art,^[33] with his people-watching being like spectating a theatrical performance.^[34] Though he does not wish to disturb the performance by being noticed, preferring to remain unnoticed by those he observes,^[35] he does often voice his thoughts about what he perceives as it occurs.^[36]^[37] However, though he does not see the problem with observing people without their permission, he will stop when requested, not putting his own hobbies above the comfort of others.^[38] He partakes in this hobby in order to understand other people, which he believes is crucial to connect to other people—especially during times of war^[39]—and causing him to become quite attentive to the interests and preferences of others.^[40]

Louis is a tea connoisseur,^[9] able to accurately distinguish the quality of tea leaves,^[41] having often brewed it himself during his youth. Due to his fondness of the activity, as well as the soothing aspects of tea,^[42] he gravitates towards sharing it with others as a means of spending time with them.^[18] While he happily listens to others talk and often finds himself in that position, he is quite talkative himself and is happy when others lend him an ear as well.^[43] He is quite blunt when expressing himself, sharing his unfiltered thoughts with others without thinking about how they might be received, though he tries to keep the interests of others in mind.^[16]^[44] Due to his positive demeanor and turbulent upbringing, he is not easily shaken;^[45] in fact, the only times where he shows signs of distress are his utter disbelief at the cruelty at Florra Port,^[46] as well as his notable nervousness when expressing his romantic interests in someone.^[47]^[48] He also carries a significant distaste against sea grapes,^[49] being the one thing he cannot tolerate despite attempting to appreciate anything his friends enjoy to the best of his abilities.^[50]

Louis retired as a knight and became a butler to the royal family. The black tea he brewed and his attentive care aided them in running the government.
His interest in people watching was a lifelong love, but however many tried to join him, he always preferred to stroll gardens alone.

Divine Dragon Alear & Watchful Valet Louis
Alear became the new Divine Dragon Monarch. His/Her bonds with the rulers of each nation resulted in lasting peace.
Louis worked hard, rarely taking in the sights of others socializing. He often took hot black tea to the Divine Dragon Monarch in the evening, so they might chat.
