Analysis
| This character analysis section may not be accurate to every player's experience. |
Lissa is one of the first characters in your army, and a quite valuable one since she is the only healer for the first few chapters. Her growth rates are serviceable, aside from her low defense growth, but her bases are rather mediocre, and she will usually die quite easily from an enemy attack on higher difficulties. Even if Lissa could take an attack from an enemy or save her life with theMiracle skill, it is usually a bad idea to place her in enemy range since she cannot counterattack, so keep her away from enemies as good as possible and let your other units do the fighting. As long as she stays away from combat, most of her base stats do not matter, aside from her magic stat which is actually pretty decent with a base of 5 and a growth of 50%.
Since Lissa is your only healer untilMaribelle joins inChapter 5, and enemies inAwakening do quite a lot of damage even during the first few chapters, she has a lot of healing to do and thus a lot of experience to gain from the very start of the game. Basic staves also become buyable afterChapter 4, allowing her to use cheap staves likeHeal whenever possible, making Lissa very easy to train overall. Another useful staff Lissa can use isRescue, which is the only staff that can transport allies around the map and grants a lot of experience when being used. Rescue staves can also be bought later on, so use them whenever they help you solving a chapter. At some point Lissa's staff rank will also be high enough to let her usePhysic or evenFortify to heal damaged allies from range, making it a lot easier to place her outside enemy range while also keeping your other units alive.
Once Lissa has accumulated enough experience to promote, she can change her class intoWar Cleric orSage. War Cleric grants her more durability and strength as well as access to axes,Rally Luck andRenewal. Unfortunately, none of these assets are very interesting for Lissa: an E axe rank will not allow her to do decent damage since her strength base and growth were pretty poor as a Cleric, Rally Luck is one of the worse support skills and Renewal will not help her much at surviving enemies since Lissa will still have trouble surviving multiple enemies even with the extra durability of the War Cleric. Sage on the other hand gives her a better boost to magic and grants her access to tomes,Rally Magic andTomefaire. While an E tome rank will not make Lissa a great combat unit, at least it uses her magic stat, which will usually be higher than her strength stat as War Cleric. It additionally gives her a 2-range option at the start, allowing her to avoid more counterattacks—in comparison, War Cleric will only gain ranged axes at D rank, requiring some investment. Rally Magic is a very decent support skill, and Tomefaire gives Lissa a well-welcomed boost to her magic. Since staff range and healing depends on your staff users magic stat, having more magic on them is always good.
While you may receive other staff users later on, Lissa can usually compete with them:Anna or promoted magicians might have better stats, but they also have a lower staff rank than her, Maribelle has more movement, but also most likely worse stats at join, andLibra is stuck in a worse class for quite a while. Combined with her early join time, this gives her usually a spot as your main staff user for most of the game.
Aside the Cleric class tree, Lissa also can reclass intoTroubadour orPegasus Knight and their respective promotions.Demoiselle is a neat skill to support male allies, but usually it is not worth the detour of reclassing into Troubadour, since being in a promoted class is a bigger improvement for Lissa. TheValkyrie class is similar to the Sage class, but trades higher movement for the cost of having slightly worse magic and no access to Tomefaire.Rally Resistance is useful later on once you meet more magic enemies, whileDual Support+ improves the support bonuses for and from Lissa, making Valkyrie a good reclassing option after mastering the Sage class. TheFalcon Knight promotion is also interesting for Lissa, since it also increases her mobility and grants her access toRally Speed, another good support skill. On the other hand, having lances as weapons andLancefaire as skill does not help Lissa much, making the class a lot less appealing to master compared to Valkyrie. AsDark Flier, Lissa loses her ability to wield staves, but gets the possibility to learnGaleforce, which can be passed down onOwain to greatly improve his combat performance. However, due to the way experience scaling after reclassing works inAwakening, it will typically take a very long time for her to actually learn the skill.
It is usually a good idea to have Lissa stay in her base class, then promote her to Sage and get her to level 15 for Tomefaire before considering reclassing her. If her combat is not good as Sage with Tomefaire, then it will not be much better as Dark Flier, unless two extra points of speed would somehow fix her problems. Rather stay in a class that can use staves and thus decide to completely avoid combat without getting useless if the enemy is too strong.
Lissa's son,Owain, is very well off for being able to inherit Galeforce from Lissa being able to reclass to Dark Flier. He will want physical fathers to further his combat since the magical fathersRicken,Henry, andLibra should be given wives that will increases their children's magical prowess. The only thing Owain needs isLuna, and there are plenty of fathers that can give it to him via the father's inherited skill, or being able to reclass toGreat Knight and get it himself.
All in all, Lissa is a good staff user throughout the entire game, mostly thanks to her early join time and decent class options.

Personality
Lissa is shown to be an energetic character, always trying to help her family and friends wherever she can. She is very friendly and gets along well with others, even pranking them on occasion, like in her support with Robin. Though she gets disappointed when people do not get along with her, as is the case with meetingLon'qu. She also does her best to prove her worth in the Shepherds, not wanting to feel like "dead weight", and hates getting called "delicate" by her brother Chrom, but also tries to be a proper princess, as evident in her support conversations with Chrom and Frederick. She is also very self-conscious about her snorting, and is not very fond of bugs or the cold.
Despite being part of the royal family of Ylisse, she does not bear the Brand of the Exalt. This causes her to worry about being the true sister of Chrom and Emmeryn, and leads her to do anything to prove herself. She is relieved to know her son, Owain, has the mark, proving her legitimacy. In her support with Chrom, she doesn't think she does anything to help the army. This proves to be untrue when he tells her that she motivates the entire army.

Virion, Archest Archer & Lissa, Sprightly Cleric
Virion returned home to Rosanne, where he was labeled a traitor and a coward, or else ignored entirely. But none of it fazed his wife, Lissa, who won the populace over with good old-fashioned charm.
Stahl, Viridian Knight & Lissa, Sprightly Cleric
Stahl continued his service as an Ylissean knight and led crucial missions across the realm. His scattered nature blended well with his wife Lissa's cheerful banter, making for a happy life indeed.

Many an unfortunate child found joy in the small orphanage Libra and his wife built after the war. The children loved Libra like a mother and treated Lissa as one of their own.
Henry, Twisted Mind & Lissa, Sprightly Cleric
Henry settled down with Lissa and turned out to be a surprisingly good father. Their newborn son, however, developed a notably bizarre personality—in no small part because of his colorful parents.
Donnel, Village Hero & Lissa, Sprightly Cleric
Donnel returned to his tiny village and built a happy life with his mother and Lissa. Still, the latter insisted on breaking up the monotony, and the couple often traveled to far-flung markets.
