Among my many days were some so trying that I was tempted to give up and die. But something always came along afterward that made me glad I lived to see it.
— Lindon

Lindon (Japanese:リンデンLinden) is a scholar and a former royal soldier ofElusia. A talented alumni of theElusian Academy, he served as a retainer to the older brother of KingHyacinth prior to his lord leaving the country for good. While he married a fellow royal soldier and raised three children with her, he has lived alone ever since she passed away.

Lindon is a playable character inFire Emblem Engage.

Biography

Lindon was born in anElusian village near the Tower of Wisdom, a library.[3][b] Hoping to help bring an end to the war waging between Elusia andBrodia at the time,[5] he attendedElusia's national academy as a student of magic, proving himself a promising scholar and a top-scoring student in his class.[6] He became a royal soldier soon after graduation and served during the war against Brodia about 30 years prior to the Fell Dragon's resurrection,[7] eventually working his way up to becoming the retainer of PrinceHyacinth's older brother.[6]

During the conflict of succession for the Elusian throne, Lindon argued passionately for his lord's side, but ultimately saw Hyacinth ascend the throne as his lord abandoned his castle and country in frustration.[8] Though the incident caused him to resent Hyacinth, Lindon chose to remain inElusia Castle and serve the royal family,[9] eventually warming up to King Hyacinth[10] and staying until at leastHortensia's youth.[11] During this long period of time, he met another royal soldier who would later become his wife, with whom he'd raise three children.[6] Soon after their children left the house, Lindon's wife passed away.[6] Though he initially kept company by continuing to train mages,[12] he eventually retired,[11] and started writing down his life's story for posterity.[6]

During the later stages of the second Fell Dragon war, Lindon was conscripted into the Elusian army to serve as a soldier once again.[11] WhenAlear traveled fromFirene to Elusia after the attack onFlorra Port, their boat was attacked by Elusian ships, with Lindon amongst the enemy forces. Though he was initially disillusioned with the state of the war, uncertain whether he should be fighting for his country on the behalf of theFour Hounds at all, he regained his vigor upon discovering that PrincessIvy was still alive and fighting alongside the Divine Dragon. Affirming his loyalty to the royal family of Elusia, he joined the Divine Dragon's army, and fought alongside them for the rest of the war. During his stay on theSomniel, he also devoted his strength to reconstructing Elusia alongside Princess Ivy.[13] He returned home after the war, passing on peacefully soon after.

Analysis

This character analysis section may not be accurate to every player's experience.

Lindon is a prepromotedSage who joins inChapter 18. Due to joining late and as a prepromote, Lindon sports high base stats in most areas, aside from luck, but low growth rates in all stats, aside from speed, resistance and HP. Lindon also joins with high weapon ranks, his S rank intomes allowing him to wield any tome in the game for no investment, including the S-rank tomeNova, while also having a notably high A rank instaves, giving him the ability to wield the wast majority of the staves available inEngage. Lindon's personal base stats are quite high in most areas, with a particularly notable high personal build of 5, which allows him to wield some of the heavier tomes, such as theElfire tome, without being weighed down by them in his base class, which is a rarity for magic oriented units inEngage. Despite his high base stats, Lindon has an unfortunate start in his joining chapter due to starting out as an enemy unit and with his only offensive tome beingThoron which notably weighs him down to the point he can get doubled by the enemies in his joining chapter, such as enemy thieves, berserkers andAbyme. As such, its recommended to trade Lindon lighter tomes upon recruitment to improve his survivability.

Lindon's personal skill,Veteran Intuition, gives him a boost of 20% to his critical rate when Lindon's equipped weapon's level is lower than the foe's. Due to most enemies wielding high rank weaponry by the time Lindon joins he can activate this skill very easily by equipping a the Elfire tome, theThunder tome for 3 range or a different lower ranked weapon. Lindon's other joining skill,Spell Harmony is much harder to activate due to relying on adjacent allied units and them also using tomes, but it can be very useful if the player manages to set it up. Due to Lindon joining with 2000 skill points he can quickly inherit a multitude of useful skills such asWrath for additional critical rate,Draconic Hex for a notable debuff to enemies in combination with the Thunder tome, to avoid the risk of a counter-attack, particularly useful against enemy bosses orSpeedtaker to reach doubling thresholds.

On the topic of reclassing, Lindon is surprisingly flexible, despite his best utility being as a magic oriented unit. Overall, Lindon's best reclassing options areMage Knight andGriffin Knight. Mage Knight offers Lindon higher movement than Sage, access to physical weapons, higher build, a higher speed cap and access to the Chaos Style skill which helps Lindon reach doubling thresholds for certain enemies. While, Lindon's personal strength is lower than his magic he can still make use magic weapons such as theLevin Sword, but in return makes Lindon lose his access to staves. Griffin Knight makes Lindon lose his access to tomes, but in return offers flying utility and high movement, pairing up quite well with Lindon's high base staff rank.

On the topic ofEmblem Rings, Lindon can perform well with any magic-oriented ring. TheRing of the Caring Princess allows him to attack multiple times on the same turn with Echo and Warp Ragnarok grants him a strong mobility option. TheRing of the Dawn Maiden amplifies his staff abilities, as well as giving him access to theThani tome for effective damage against cavalry and armored units. TheRing of the Instructor is also useful on Pandreo thanks to theThyrsus staff granting him additional range with his tomes. Finally, Lindon can also make use of theRing of the Lady of the Plains in order to patch up her speed issues with Speedtaker, though said skill and ring are in high demand. Lindon's only flaw is his low growth rates which means that he won't be reaping as much benefit from a level up as other playable units with high base stats and growth rates, such asPandreo.

Overall, Lindon is a solid filler lategame unit who also has enough utility through his high weapon ranks and powerful personal skill, that makes him stand out even if the player's army is complete by the time he joins.

Personality

Lindon is an old man who is past his prime, and is keenly aware of this fact.[14] While part of him wants to embrace this fact and live out his life in peace and quiet,[15] he carries an energetic spirit which makes him unable to remain inactive for long, as well as an insatiable curiosity towards gaining further knowledge.[16][17] He is devoted to servingElusia and acts in what he believes to be the best interests of his country,[10] to the point of committing treason to side with PrincessIvy over the Elusian army when the country is underSombron's control[18] and working alongside the crown princess to restore Elusia during its time of crisis.[13] Due to his many years of scholarly experience, he is happy to offer advice to younger generations,[19][20][21] as well as encouraging more positive forms of expression[22] and self-care.[23]

A true sage and scholar, Lindon continues performing experiments in the hopes of discovering new applications of magic for the betterment of society,[24][25] willing to use his allies as test subjects despite the potential dangers which could befall them.[26][27] Failure does not deter him, as he sees the failure of his experiment as new and valuable knowledge in itself.[28] He does not see magic as inherently meant for purposes of combat;[29] though he initially studied magic in order to put an end to the war between Elusia andBrodia,[5] seemingly involving him joining the army with the intent of helping Elusia reach a swift victory,[7] he has since started integrating magic into various mundane aspects of his daily life.[30] One notable instance of this is his habit of baking pastries with thunder magic,[31] which he does in order to remind others of the peaceful applications of the craft.[32][33]

Lindon is a widower, carrying the portrait of his departed wife with him so they can remain together even after her passing.[34] Despite her permanent absence, his love for her only grows deeper each day, and he continues speaking fondly of her.[35] Having shared every moment of his life with her since the day they married, through hardships and happiness, he cannot help but get sentimental when remembering her.[36] He is unable to and—self-admittedly—unsure whether or not he should move on from her,[37] often losing himself in the memories they shared. He loves his children as well,[38] wishing to see them more after they all moved out.[39]

Despite his energetic nature, Lindon is prone to bouts of negativity.[40] Aware of his impending death,[41] he sometimes wonders whether or not he should continue his works of passion[42] and pushes people away,[43] not wanting them to grow attached and leave them with sorrow.[44] He regrets his part in both wars he's fought in,[45] willing to give up his life if it would satisfy those impacted by them.[46] However, while he has struggled to find the will to live in the past, he is grateful to remain alive[47] and currently possesses a clear zest for life.[48] He is happy to share his passions with others[49] and possesses a good sense of humor,[50] more than happy to use his old age[51] and the departure of his wife[27] to guilt trip people into working with him. Though he has made peace with death, it is not out of a desire to die but rather because, despite not being a holy man,[52] he believes that he will be reunited with his wife on "the other side".[53]

Hortensia: So that's why Ivy was asking for you... I'm sorry, Lindon. I was being selfish. I was thinking only of my own education, while you and Ivy are both hard at work for Elusia.
    " — Lindon andHortensia,B Support,Fire Emblem Engage
  14. "The world is in a sad state indeed if it needs a tired old man like me to save it." — Lindon toCelica,A Bond,Fire Emblem Engage
  15. "Part of me wants to rest and relax in my twilight years. But you've convinced me to squeeze just a little more blood from this aging stone." — Lindon toVander,C Support,Fire Emblem Engage
  16. "Roy: Is that another book? You really like reading, don't you?
Lindon: I do. Even at my age, there's a lot to learn from books.
    " —Roy and Lindon,B Bond,Fire Emblem Engage
  17. "Lindon: Would you tell me more about your world today, Lucina?
Lucina: Your curiosity seems endless, Lindon. I hope some of it rubs off on me.
    " — Lindon andLucina,B Bond,Fire Emblem Engage
  18. "Alear: I am allied with Princess Ivy, if that helps.
Lindon: Princess Ivy is alive?! As far as I am concerned, where she stands, there lies Elusia. My devotion has always been to the royal family itself. Please, take me with you.
    " —Alear and Lindon,Chapter 18,Fire Emblem Engage
  19. ""I have been rewarded in experience." "The world needs mentors." As I set up my experiments, I recalled many times what you'd said to me. In my younger days, I learned so much of what I knew from the guidance of my elders. The idea of a world without such mentors in it began to frighten me a bit. Then, too, growing older and losing my skills as a knight taught me a few things. Perhaps it's only at our age that we become capable of filling those roles." — Lindon toVander,A Support,Fire Emblem Engage
  20. "I may lack time, but I'm never short on words of advice. If you ever need to talk, I will listen. You're a fine, accomplished young woman. I'm eager to see what else you become." — Lindon toHortensia,A Support,Fire Emblem Engage
  21. "Veronica: Lindon, you seem like the sort to know. What are the qualities of a good monarch?
Lindon: That depends very much on the time and place. Your world is very different from this one, no?
    Veronica: Yes, I suppose so.
Lindon: There is a lot to consider in answering your question. Fortunately, you have plenty of time.
    " —Veronica and Lindon,A Bond,Fire Emblem Engage
  22. "Mauvier: Having memories you enjoy looking back on is proof of a life well lived. My own life knows more regrets than happiness.
Lindon: Ah, but you are now free to carve out a new life—one more fulfilling than my own, perhaps.
    " —Mauvier and Lindon,A Support,Fire Emblem Engage
  23. "Lindon: I'm very serious. You've exhausted yourself, lad, both physically and mentally. Nothing you could read in a book right now will teach you as much as these flowers can. Humor me and take a seat at my side.
Jean: OK... If you say so.
Lindon: Now lie back slowly and look up at the sky. Then take a long, deep breath.
    Jean: OK... Like that? [...] ... ...
Lindon: Asleep at last. And about time too.
    " — Lindon andJean,B Support,Fire Emblem Engage
  24. "Alear: This experiment will somehow result in making people's lives easier and happier, right?
Lindon: Absolutely, Divine One. What I learn by examining you is certain to lead to a new discovery or three. I anticipate very interesting results relating to quality sleep.[...] This could be a godsend for those who struggle with insomnia.
    " —Alear and Lindon,C Support,Fire Emblem Engage
  25. "Lindon: I've found a very intriguing tome. With what's in here, I may be able to develop a whole new type of magic.
Vander: That does sound interesting. What sort of magic?
Lindon: You won't believe this, but it's a spell to restore one's youth. [...] It's still theoretical for now. I can't promise I'll get results even if I work out the particulars. But if I succeed, we could fight just as ably as our young comrades. I'm no slouch even as I am, but if I had my youth back, I'd be a terror on the battlefield. And never mind the war—magic like this would change society as we know it.
    " — Lindon andVander,B Support,Fire Emblem Engage
  26. "The first step is to cast Thunder on you a few times to see how your body reacts. You'll grow numb to the pain soon enough, but your hair may not survive the experience." — Lindon toAlear,C Support,Fire Emblem Engage
  27. 27.027.1"Lindon: Thank you, Mauvier! Now, take this corn and hurl it skyward.
    Mauvier: What?! Not this again!
Lindon: Oh, but...my dear, late wife loved corn, you see. She would want us to celebrate her this way. Now then, whenever you're ready! I'm standing by to blast! I know what you're thinking, but don't worry. I probably—no, almost definitely—won't miss!
    " — Lindon andMauvier,B Support,Fire Emblem Engage
  28. "Byleth: We get more reluctant to try things as we grow older. That's what impresses me about you.
Lindon: Well, one never knows until one tries.
Byleth: You're not scared that you might fail?
Lindon: Haha! What is failure, really? Discovering which methods don't work is a success in itself.
    " —Byleth and Lindon,A Bond,Fire Emblem Engage
  29. "Magic isn't just for defeating your enemies. You can create things, cook, and so much more." — Lindon toLyn,C Bond,Fire Emblem Engage
  30. "Claude: I've never seen anyone so much as think to try baking with thunder magic. That's brilliant.
Lindon: Magic has many such applications. Commanding water to wash your laundry, for instance.
Claude: Yeah, or getting the wind to dust your room for you. I'm starting to see the possibilities.
Lindon: Oh, be careful with that one. It's far too easy to make a worse mess than you started with.
    " —Claude and Lindon,A Bond,Fire Emblem Engage
  31. "Boucheron: These are some tasty-looking pastries.
Lindon: I baked them myself. There's apple filling inside.
    Boucheron: You bake, Sir Lindon?
Lindon: Oh, yes. Nothing bakes a pastry like a good jolt of thunder magic.
    " —Boucheron and Lindon,B Support,Fire Emblem Engage
  32. "Leif: I am very intrigued by your method of baking with magic.
Lindon: Magic can be a boon or a bane depending on how you use it. I bake to remind people of that.
    " —Leif and Lindon,A Bond,Fire Emblem Engage
  33. "Micaiah: That's a delicious-looking cake. Did you bake it yourself?
Lindon: Haha! Astute of you to recognize talent when you see it! I baked this using thunder magic. People only think of magic as a weapon, but it can be used in everyday life too.
    " —Micaiah and Lindon,A Bond,Fire Emblem Engage
  34. "Micaiah: You carry that portrait of your wife around with you wherever you go, huh?
Lindon: We were always together, from our wedding to her death. This way, we're still together now.
    " —Micaiah and Lindon,B Bond,Fire Emblem Engage
  35. "Mauvier: Oh. Your wife, Sir Lindon.
Lindon: She wasn't just beautiful. She was kind, loving...and the best friend I could have asked for. It's been some time since she passed, yet my love for her continues to grow. Ah, how I wish I could see her smile once more, taste her cooking again...
    " —Mauvier and Lindon,B Support,Fire Emblem Engage
  36. "Boucheron: After the wedding, L's life was simple but happy. The couple went through hard times, but they did it together, and saw their children grow up. But just when the kids were all grown and they could enjoy their sunset years...L's wife passed. L never got to feed his wife the last pastry he baked for her...with a bolt of thunder. ... ...
Lindon: There, there, Boucheron... I find myself crying as well today.
    " —Boucheron and Lindon,A Support,Fire Emblem Engage
  37. "Lindon: Hehe, you've caught me in a vulnerable moment. How embarrassing. A man my age should know when to let go of the past. Quite unbecoming of me...
Mauvier: There is nothing at all embarrassing about having a deep love for your spouse.
Lindon: Ah, you're right, of course. We raised three children, you know. They're all grown now, living their lives. They have their own homes, their own families... It's become difficult to gather all of us together. The further we grow apart, the brighter my memories seem to shine. More and more, I find myself looking backward rather than forward. I'm not sure how to change that...or if I should.
    " — Lindon andMauvier,A Support,Fire Emblem Engage
  38. "What's more, a parent always loves their child. King Hyacinth could never be disappointed in you, Princess Hortensia. I've raised three children to your nil, so if I say it's true...you have no room to argue." — Lindon toHortensia,A Support,Fire Emblem Engage
  39. "I haven't seen my children much since retiring. It's a lonely life, but what can you do?" — Lindon toSigurd,A Bond,Fire Emblem Engage
  40. "Lindon: Why is mankind doomed to make mistake after mistake?
Ike: I hear you. But people aren't perfect. Mistakes are how we learn.
Lindon: I see your point. If only what we learned was always for good...
    " — Lindon andIke,A Bond,Fire Emblem Engage
  41. "Jean: Sir? Would you do me the honor of taking me on as a student?
Lindon: Who, me? [...] I have a lot to teach, and I'm getting on in years. I might end before my curriculum does.
    " —Jean and Lindon,A Support,Fire Emblem Engage
  42. "Lindon: I'm not as young as I like to pretend. Maybe it's time I stopped doing these strange experiments.
Corrin: Don't talk that way! You're never too old to do what you love. Besides, you're still young to me.
Lindon: In what sense?! Oh, hmm, I suppose that's true for an Emblem. In that case, let's get baking!
    " — Lindon andCorrin,A Bond,Fire Emblem Engage
  43. "Lindon: [...] I don't know how much use I'll be. Find a more practical and efficient use of your time, or you'll regret it down the road.
Alear: Well, I'd hate to waste any time, it's true. I of all people know how fleeting it can be.
    Lindon: Well said. Now then...
Alear: All the more reason why we should sit and have this talk without delay, Lindon. There's a lot I want to ask, and any more back-and-forth would be impractical and inefficient.
Lindon: Well— But on the other hand— Hmph. Too smart for your own good, I say! But have it your way. Whatever wisdom I've got is at your disposal.
    " — Lindon andAlear,B Support,Fire Emblem Engage
  44. "Alear: This ring is a sign of the partnership we already have. We're stronger together. I want to seal that bond in the hopes of saving the world.
Lindon: It has to be me, eh? There's no one younger? I only have so many years left. You do this, and you'll end up feeling like I did the day I lost my wife. Nothing but sorrow for you lies down that road.
    " —Alear and Lindon,Ring Support,Fire Emblem Engage
  45. "My own countrymen did this. I can offer no excuses, only apologies." — Lindon, exploration dialogue atFlorra Port,Fire Emblem Engage
  46. "Lindon: If you want to hate me, Saphir, you have the right. Even if you wanted me dead, I'd allow it if it would ease your pain.
Saphir: What?! Why would you say that?!
Lindon: Because I mean it. I may not have done any harm to your parents personally, but I was a soldier in that war. I can easily see a world in which it was I who ended your parents' lives.
    Saphir: I...
Lindon: I am a man long past his prime. I'd happily go to my end if it would bring you relief. And although words can change nothing now...I do apologize. I am truly, profoundly sorry.
    " — Lindon andSaphir,B Support,Fire Emblem Engage
  47. "Lindon: ...
    Alear: Something on your mind?
Lindon: Just a request of the Divine Dragon from someone who has been around a while. Stay alive. No matter what foulness you see in this life.
    Alear: Lindon?
Lindon: Among my many days were some so trying that I was tempted to give up and die. But something always came along afterward that made me glad I lived to see it. My friendship with you, Divine One, rates high among those happy occasions.
Alear: I'm touched that you'd say so.
Lindon: Push hard through those bleakest of nights toward the dawn where things seem brighter. If there's one bit of wisdom I'd want today's youth to heed from me, it's that.
    " — Lindon andAlear,A Support,Fire Emblem Engage
  48. "Lindon: Especially that new fellow who debuts in this chapter! What a pleasant addition he was. He laughed, he cried... He felt truly alive! He might be my new favorite character of yours. I must admit, I felt a certain kinship toward him.
Jade: I'm glad to hear that. I hope you don't think it too presumptuous of me, but I did model that character after you.
Lindon: Aha! I had a hunch! What a wonderful feeling, to laugh along with your fictional counterpart. I now take his potent zest for life as the highest of compliments.
    " — Lindon andJade,A Support,Fire Emblem Engage
  49. "Lindon: You have a keen eye for observation and a skill for capturing them on the page... It was a magnificent novel, truly. I thank you again for sharing your passion with me.
Jade: Of course. Thank you so much for reading it.
Lindon: I have a bit of that fire myself, truth be told. I've chronicled my early years in a book of my own.
    Jade: You have?
Lindon: Indeed. I haven't mentioned it to many people.
Jade: I would love to read it, if you wouldn't mind sharing.
Lindon: Hohoho, wonderful! I hoped you might. What a thrill it is, having a fellow writer among our ranks. I can hardly contain myself! If and when you have the time, we should compare our lists of favorite comedies.
    " — Lindon andJade,B Support,Fire Emblem Engage
  50. "Lindon: So this is the Pact Ring. I can tell already that there's great power bound up in it. You don't mind if I experiment with it a bit, hm? First, I'll test its reaction to Thunder...
Alear: Wait, stop! That ring is very important.
Lindon: Hahaha, just winding you up, Divine One.
    " — Lindon andAlear,Ring Support,Fire Emblem Engage
  51. "Soren: Another one of your experiments? This is not a good use of my time.
Lindon: But it's a good use of mine, and I have much less of it than you. Come now, don't be stingy.
    " —Soren and Lindon,A Bond,Fire Emblem Engage
  52. "I am no holy man, and yet standing here makes me want to offer a prayer to the Divine Dragon." — Lindon, exploration dialogue atLythos Castle,Fire Emblem Engage
  53. "Death does not frighten me. I know my wife awaits me on the other side." — Lindon,Chapter 18,Fire Emblem Engage
