“ | If I go back, I'll have no choice but to take the throne. It's my late father's will, but my uncles would never accept it. Just one false step and we'd have a civil war, just like here. And it's always the common folk who suffer for it! | ” | — Lewyn |

Lewyn (Japanese:レヴィンLevn) is the errant prince, later king, ofSilesse, the son of QueenLahna and his late predecessor, and afull-blooded descendant of the Wind CrusaderCed. In his youth, displeased at the inheritance squabbles of his unclesMyos andDaccar at the expense of their subjects, he departed Silesse to travel the world as an anonymous bard. In time, he came toAgustria, where he became involved inSigurd's efforts to oppose KingChagall's abuses of the people, and accompanied Sigurd in exile to Silesse, where Lahna gave him theBook of Forseti, and then back intoGrannvale. Seventeen years after theBattle of Belhalla, he emerged as an important figure in the liberation wars against the Grannvale Empire, serving as the personal advisor ofSeliph.
Biography
Note: This biography adheres to the canon defined byThracia 776, which dictates that Lewyn marriedErinys and is the father ofCed andFee, and all references to his marriage with Erinys are in accordance with this. In the gameplay ofGenealogy, although the game's events still encourage him to bepaired with Erinys, his choice of wife – and thus his children – remain entirely at the player's discretion, and none of the events with Erinys's family would happen in those cases.
Prince and bard
Following his father's death, Lewyn became an unwilling participant in the squabble over who would inherit the Silessian throne, in which his unclesMyos andDaccar claimed they had more of a right to it than Lewyn himself. Even though the vast majority of Silesse's citizens supported Lewyn as their successor, Lewyn grew weary of his uncles' tantrum and, knowing that his succession to the throne would provoke violence upon the nation from his uncles, he fled the country in Grann 756.[1] Once out of Silesse, Lewyn disguised himself as an anonymous bard and travelled the world in this guise, never revealing his true identity.
In Grann 758, Lewyn was travelling throughAgustria, and had spent some time withSilvia, at the beginning of the Agustrian war against Sigurd. WhenMacbeth unleashed bandits on the Agustrian villages, Lewyn departed to fight them, with Silvia following. He confronted Sigurd about the misery his fight with Chagall caused the people of Agustria, but was impressed by Sigurd's attitude and sided with him to finish the job. During the fight he encounteredErinys, dispatched by his mother to find him and tricked by Chagall into thinking he was a hostage held by Sigurd; he reluctantly agreed to return to Silesse with her after sorting out some problems, and she joined Sigurd's army to stay with him in the meantime.
When Lahna gave Sigurd free refuge in Silesse after being branded a traitor, Lewyn went with him. He and Lahna had some difficulty getting along in light of how he abandoned her, thoughAnnand insisted that Lahna was actually happier than she had been in a while to see him. He fought in the subsequent civil war sparked by his uncles, enraged at their abusive approach to the people and country and by the death of Annand, and when Sigurd's army reclaimed Silesse Castle, Lahna presented him with his birthright, theBook of Forseti, to use in assisting Sigurd on his quest for justice. At some point during or after this time, he married Erinys.
After the Battle of Belhalla

Lewyn was present at theBattle of Belhalla, and was personally killed by ArchbishopManfroy during or after it. He was revived soon after byForseti, who also took possession of Lewyn at the cost of some of Lewyn's memories. After being revived, Lewyn completely disappeared for a time, but at some point returned to Silesse to live with Erinys and his children. He spent an undetermined amount of time with them before abandoning them again, leaving Erinys to rule Silesse and raise their children alone in the face of Grannvale.[2] Years later, Lewyn foundJulia inBelhalla shortly after her narrow escape from her Loptous-possessedbrother, amnesiac and badly injured. Though unaware of her true identity as a Grannvale royal, he took her to a remote region of Silesse to take care of her, though the two eventually abandoned Silesse as Grannvale's grip on the country grew too strong to protect her.[3]
In the intervening years as Grannvale transformed into a despotic force, Lewyn appears to have set to work orchestrating efforts to formally oppose the Empire, among them hiringAugust to act as an advisor toLeif.[4] In Grann 776, in the aftermath of the fall ofTarrah, Lewyn appeared before August to check in on his progress, admitting he never expected any outcome other than Tarrah's fall.[5] He then departed toOrgahil to check up on something unidentified occurring there, after which he would travel to Isaach.[5]
Lewyn arrived in Isaach in Grann 777, during the early stages ofSeliph's fight against theDozel occupation of the country, and he met with Seliph after his conquest of Ganeishire Castle. Praising Seliph's decision to launch his revolution at this time, Lewyn leftJulia in Seliph's care as Silesse was proving too troublesome to house her in,[3] then departed forLeonster. Lewyn returned shortly after Seliph defeatedDanann and conquered Ribaut, bringing news of the state of the world and introducing Seliph to the full scope of the activities of Grannvale. He advised Seliph to travel south to Leonster to meet withLeif and his liberation force, then departed with him, acting as an advisor and tactician.
AtDahna, Lewyn gave Seliph a brief lesson in the history of the Twelve Crusaders, and a cryptic message about the "return" of the Crusaders.[6] Following that, he guided Seliph's army throughThracia andMiletos until their arrival in Grannvale itself at the climax of the war. As Seliph's army stormed Grannvale, Lewyn shared with him a more detailed history of the Crusaders, identifying the gods and Loptous as dragons,[7] explaining the crucial roleNaga's power plays in combating Loptous,[8] and confirming thatJulius was possessed by Loptous and appared to be reconstructing theLoptrian Empire. Having since learned of Julia's true identity, he also advised Seliph that Julia would be instrumental in defeating Julius and that finding her and the Book of Naga was a priority.[8]
At the end of the war, despite the pleas of his children, Lewyn declined to return to Silesse with them, insisting that he would be a liability to the restoration of the country. Before departing himself, Seliph realized the true nature of Lewyn as the host of Forseti, and thanked Forseti for his assistance.[9]
Fire Emblem: Genealogy of the Holy War
Role
Lewyn is a playable character in the first generation. InChapter 2, Lewyn, along withSilvia, appears outside of avillage as a player unit onceHeirhein has been seized. He is playable up until the end ofChapter 5.
Lewyn is relegated to non-playable status in the second generation, instead regularly appearing in cutscenes as Seliph's advisor and tactician. If he was married toSilvia,Erinys orTailtiu in the first generation, this allows Seliph to have special conversations with his children (Lene,Ced andFee, orTine) which boost their stats.

Analysis
This character analysis section may not be accurate to every player's experience. |
As a unit
Lewyn joins in Chapter 2 as a level 6Bard. He has good base stats, especially in magic, skill and speed. While he does not haveFollow-Up, preventing him from doubling enemies, he hasAdept andCritical, still granting him a way of dealing double damage. His Adept activation rate is very high thanks to excellent attack speed, so he can still strike twice often. Critical also allows him to perform critical hits, killing many enemies in one hit when it triggers. Thanks to his decent skill growth and his amazing speed growth (the latter of which is significantly bolstered by his major Forseti blood), Lewyn should continue to have no problem activating his skills throughout the first half of the game. Furthermore, Lewyn has 1-2 range and hits onresistance; enemies inGenealogy tend to have low resistance and lack 1–2 range weapons, so Lewyn can often deal high damage without being counterattacked. Lewyn can reliably participate in arena fights without too much trouble; assuming he gets to attack first and if he procs Adept, he can typically 2HKO most opponents with his startingElwind tome before they even have a chance to act. His lack of Follow-Up can be remedied with theFollow-Up Ring, and he will always have high speed to double almost anyone he fights with it equipped, though many other units that don't have the skill as well would want the ring for the same reason.
Lewyn's most significant problems are his low movement and lack of access to a mount. While he has 6 movement, compared to the 5 that some infantry classes sport, he still lags far behind mounted units who possess upwards of 8 movement and theCanto skill that allows them to continue moving after attacking. This poses a major weakness for Lewyn onGenealogy's massive maps, as he will often struggle to even make it to a fight on time. You can give him theLeg Ring to somewhat overcome this shortcoming (boosting his movement up to a whopping 9), but the ring is a heavily competitive item coveted by many units.
In Chapter 4, when Lewyn visitsSilesse, he will obtain theBook of Forseti. As a Holy Weapon, it is nothing short of dominant. It has 30 might, low weight, and grants its wielder +10 skill and +20 speed. While using Forseti, Lewyn's combat is arguably the best in the first generation, as long as he can reach the enemies. While wielding Forseti, Lewyn can also clear the arena without any trouble, breezing through all seven fights with it. This means he will always have the money to repair Forseti, and he can always give his remaining money to his lover.
Lewyn's promotion toSage grants him incredible stat bonuses and access to B-rank staves, allowing him to support allies without fighting. Perhaps of equal importance (especially when playing for an A-rank in Experience), staves grant Lewyn the ability to spam things likeWarp andReturn for easy EXP.
As a father
Lewyn's most common pairing is withErinys. The game strongly suggests it since Lewyn's conversation with Erinys in Chapter 4 makes them fall in love instantly. This pairing givesFee an excellent speed growth,Adept, andCritical. Since Fee always hasFollow-Up (inheriting it from Erinys), she becomes an even better combat unit. While she would have higher strength with a physical father likeNaoise, Lewyn is still a solid choice thanks to the skills he passes down.
More importantly, this pairing makesCed incredibly powerful. Ced's base stats are excellent regardless of his father, but with Lewyn as his father, he joins with the Forseti tome. His speed and HP growths rise over 100%, and his combat capabilities become incredible. Much like Lewyn, a Ced wielding Forseti can fight entire armies without getting hit and counter both melee and ranged enemies. He also becomes one of the easiest ways to kill enemy Holy Weapon users, who are more common in the second generation ofGenealogy. While he still suffers from being unmounted, no pairing can fix that.
Another common pairing for Lewyn is withTailtiu. This gives bothTine andArthur Adept and Critical, increasing their combat potential. Typically, they would only haveWrath, but Lewyn gives them more options. While passing down the more reliableFollow-Up would be better, Adept is the next best option. Lewyn also passes down Forseti Holy Blood to both children, significantly increasing their HP and speed growths. This improves their durability and Adept activation rates.
Most importantly, Arthur inherits the Forseti tome and can use it without investment. This is especially useful because Arthur joins in Chapter 6 – the second generation's first chapter, making him the earliest possible Forseti user to appear in the second generation. No other pairing gives the player a Holy Weapon this early. Also, while Arthur is unmounted before promotion, he gains a mount upon promotion. He will never have Follow-Up without the Follow-Up Ring, but even without it, Forseti allows him to kill most enemies with ease. He is much easier to train while wielding the Forseti, too, thanks to the tome's high might and stat bonuses. After promotion, Arthur will be among the best combat units in the second generation. No other Holy Weapon user in the second generation has both 1-2 range and a mount, so Arthur with Forseti fills a unique niche. Unfortunately, Arthur's stats besides movement are not as good as Ced's, so he will not be as good at combat, though this is mainly relevant against enemy Holy Weapon wielders.
The third most common pairing for Lewyn is withSilvia. SinceCoirpre andLene are both frail units, the increase to HP growth granted by Holy Blood makes them a bit more durable over time, and the increased speed growth will bolster their avoidance as they gain levels. They also both gain Critical, improving their combat a little. That said, neither Lene nor Coirpre excel at fighting. Lene is a dancer, so her stats are mostly redundant regardless of her father, and Coirpre can only use staves before promotion.
With Lewyn as his father, Coirpre inherits the Forseti tome and can use it after he promotes. He is a worse user of it than Ced, joining later and requiring investment to even start using the tome. He is also worse than Arthur because he lacks a mount. However, this pairing is the third and final way to access Forseti in the second generation. Coirpre enjoys all the benefits Forseti Lewyn had, including increased survivability and excellent damage output. The drawback is that he remains unmounted, can only fight after promotion, and has among one of the more trickier recruitment requirements out of the three Forseti users, making this pairing the worst choice among the three.
Lewyn's other pairings are not very good because they prevent him from passing down the Forseti tome. Only male children inherit Lewyn's major Forseti Holy Blood. Arthur, Ced, and Coirpre are the only male child units in the second generation who can use tomes, so they are the only Forseti candidates. Lewyn still passes down Adept and Critical in other pairings, as well as growth bonuses from Forseti Holy Blood. However, the Forseti tome is by far the most important.
Brief summary
Overall, Lewyn is an excellent combat unit in the first generation but suffers from lacking a mount. His Forseti Holy Blood and Forseti tome are his most significant traits. They make him one of the most important fathers. Pairing up Lewyn with Erinys, Tailtiu or Silvia gives the player access to a Forseti user in the second generation. Forseti is among the most potent weapons in the game and makes its wielder a combat prodigy, making Lewyn and whoever inherits his tome very fun to use.

Personality
Before the Battle of Belhalla, Lewyn's primary concern was for the common man. He has no patience for the power struggles of the nobility and for the harm caused to the people in the crossfire, and it was for precisely this reason that he left Silesse to travel the world, protecting the people of the world from avaricious nobles when he encountered them.[10] As a result of his experiences with Myos and Daccar he distrusted nobles and royalty by default, particularly if their actions proved detrimental to the common folk even if just through ignorance of the reality of the situation, but would quickly warm to them if they proved to be decent people, as withSigurd.[11] He kept his identity as the Silessean prince a secret, working under the guise of a mere bard, untilErinys blew his cover by informing Sigurd of his true identity. Where the security of commoners was not a concern, he was a capricious individual intent on relaxing and escaping trouble where possible, and a mild womanizer. When he was younger, he developed a romantic interest in the Angelic KnightAnnand; as he matured, however, he found himself instead interested in Erinys, Annand's sister. In addition to his outward appearance, it appears that he was also highly intelligent; as observed byLibra, Lewyn'sEinherjar incarnation was capable of sensing that something was amiss about his ongoing existence.[12]
After the Battle of Belhalla, however, Lewyn's personality abruptly shifted as a result of Forseti possessing him. While still strongly concerned with the protection of the people of Jugdral, his focus was now concerned with the bigger picture of the fight againstLoptous and the Grannvale Empire. He was highly reluctant to engage with his own past, to the point of avoiding and shunning his own children and renouncing any claim to being the king of Silesse. Though an excellent mentor and advisor to Seliph, he was not above fiercely rebuking him when he did not agree with his opinions, particularly if Seliph was reluctant to fight for whatever reason.[13] Forseti's revival and possession of Lewyn required that parts of his original personality be surrendered, and so at the war's conclusion and Forseti's departure, he was incapable of returning to his original life as Silesse's king.[14]

TearRing Saga: Yutona Heroes War Chronicles
Lewyn was originally intended to narrate the events ofTearRing Saga: Yutona Heroes War Chronicles, back when it was known by its original title ofEmblem Saga. Evidently, this was removed after legal pressure fromNintendo resulted in allFire Emblem references being removed from the game, though an unused opening for the game mentioning him can be found in the game files.[15]
The aforementioned opening for the game mentioning Lewyn can be found below:
“ | The troubadour Lewyn singeth: Fortheria, land of the sleeping gods, a land unable to escape from war. For so long as people are human, the sins of history are doomed to repeat… Long ago, war was fought for generations between two sides: the aboriginal Canaanites of the island continent Fortheria, and the immigrant Jugudi of the mainland continent. Because of this long-standing opposition, or perhaps in spite of it, the Canaanites founded the Empire of the Dark God, while the Jugudi built the Kingdom of Reeve. The Kingdom of Reeve was whittled away by the Empire, who had obtained the favor of the Dark God. After years of successive blunders and disaffection of the corrupt royalty, the Reevan capital of Lieberant finally capitulated. In response to this, an alliance of small countries dotting the Senay coastline–Mahl, Wellt, and Blaad–rose up against the Empire. At the site of Fort Valt, they faced Achtullus, a renowned Canaanite commander, and Kranion, the demonic dragon who truly controlled the Empire. In the face of these enemies, the alliance suffered a great defeat. And so, two years have passed since the fall of the Kingdom of Reeve… | ” |

A stylish guest from Silesse has come to attend the Day of the Twelve festival! That's right, it's Lewyn, and he's making an appearance in a special outfit! | This elegant outfit is based on the attire worn by Ced, Lewyn's ancestor. He was one of the 12 crusaders, who once carried the wind tome Forseti! | The green shawl Lewyn is wearing calls to mind a gentle breeze, and it comes complete with metallic fittings that gleam with the light. Lewyn once guided Seliph, the Scion of Light, so I'd say that it's a pretty appropriate addition! | Lewyn has something of a relaxed, mature attitude that makes him seem rather grown-up compared to others. I hope that he'll continue to look out for the younger Heroes at the festival! | ||||||||||

English | Lewyn | As ofFire Emblem Awakening. Variant ofLewin, derived from the Old EnglishLeofwine, "dear friend".[18] It also invokes the Welshwyn, "fair, white, blessed", a common suffix of Welsh names. Likely changed from "Levin" to avert confusion with the unrelatedLevin Sword. |
English (unofficial) | Levin | Widely known by this name prior to the international release ofAwakening, and used in theGenealogy andThraciafan translations. FromLevin, acommon surname of Jewish origin indicating descent from the Biblical tribe ofLevi. Etymologically unrelated to theLevin Sword. |

- ↑Inferred; theThracia 776 timeline states that the Agustrian war occurrs in Grann 758, at which point Lewyn is stated to have been on the run for two years.
- ↑"Lewyn: Oh, Ced. I guess you've found me. Been a while, huh? How's things?
Ced: How's things? HOW'S THINGS?! Father, don't you realize? I've been searching for you for all this time! Do you even realize how long it's been since you ran away from home?
Lewyn: Oh, yeah. I guess it has been a few years... Hey, how's Erinys doing these days?
Ced: How dare you... Mother is DEAD! All we ever wanted was for her to see you one last time before she died... That's why I've been looking for you!" — Lewyn andCed inChapter 8,Fire Emblem: Genealogy of the Holy War - ↑3.03.1"See, I found her years ago in Belhalla when she was just a little girl, hurt pretty badly. Since then I've been looking after her in a hidden little corner of Silesse, at least until we had to get out a while back as the Empire set about tightening its grip. The thing is, I've got things that need doing over in Leonster, and at this point, she's just slowing me down. I hate to impose on you, Seliph, but I don't have much of a choice. Could I just leave her with your group for a while? I still don't know what happened to her, but it must've been pretty awful. Poor thing. Back when I first found her, she couldn't remember a thing about what happened. It looks like she still can't..." — Lewyn toSeliph after seizing Ganeishire Castle inChapter 6,Fire Emblem: Genealogy of the Holy War
- ↑"It was not by chance that our lives intersected. In fact, I only became your tactician because I was ordered to do so by my benefactor." —August toLeif at the ending ofendgame,Fire Emblem: Thracia 776
- ↑5.05.1"Lewyn: Oh, don't kid yourself. Tarrah's capitulation was inevitable - we both knew this. You've been doing a fine job.
August: If you say so, Your Highness...
Lewyn: Now, if there's no other matters of import, I must be going. I still have to check in on the Orgahil region before returning to Isaach. It will likely be another year before we're able to meet like this again. Until then, I leave things in your capable hands, August." — Lewyn andAugust at the ending ofChapter 14x,Fire Emblem: Thracia 776 - ↑"Lewyn: Long ago, at the peak of the old holy war, Dahna was the last bastion of the resistance army... It was the last free land in Jugdral. In battle after battle, the overwhelming might of the Loptrian Empire had devastated the resistance. Ultimately, the last of the resistance soldiers barricaded themselves within Dahna's walls. Battered and wounded as they were, they were nonetheless determined to fight to the bitter end. But then, suddenly, there was a miracle... From the heavens descended twelve gods, who bestowed upon twelve young heroes miraculous weapons and immense powers. Thus were born the Twelve Crusaders, the heroes who led the resistance to victory.
Seliph: That was the legendary Miracle of Dahna, yes?
Lewyn: Yeah, the very same. And even as we speak, Seliph, another miracle is dawning upon us. Just as the resurrection of Loptous looms on the horizon, so too are the Crusaders themselves arising in our world once more..." — Lewyn andSeliph after seizing Dahna Castle inChapter 7,Fire Emblem: Genealogy of the Holy War - ↑"Seliph: Just where did the Crusaders' power come from? What in the world are these gods?
Lewyn: I can't say for sure... But whatever they were, they realized that our land's misery was caused by the power of the dragonkin. And so they came to Jugdral from some other world to save the human race. It was they who suddenly appeared at Dahna, just as its doom seemed certain....Long story short, they were dragons. The gods we know only from scripture? They were all of the dragonkin, just like Loptous. With a single taste of the blood of dragons, these once humble warriors of the liberation army were reborn as the Twelve Crusaders. Each dragon presented to their crusader a weapon steeped in their own power. And then, with some final parting words of wisdom to the Crusaders, the dragonkin departed Jugdral." —Seliph and Lewyn after seizing Dozel Castle inendgame,Fire Emblem: Genealogy of the Holy War - ↑8.08.1"Lewyn: The great dragon Naga, strongest of them all, bestowed their own blood upon the leader of the liberation army, the priest Heim. Naga knew only their power could possibly hope to stand against that of Loptous.
Seliph: So nobody else among the dragonkin would be able to prevail against Loptous?
Lewyn: It certainly wouldn't be easy, I think. Even if you had every last dragon fighting together, they'd still need Naga's power. This, of course, means that if we're to win today, we'll need the surviving heir to Saint Heim. In other words, one of Deirdre's three children. Of those three, you didn't inherit the full breadth of Naga's blood, and it's pretty obvious that Julius didn't. Actually, I only recently learned who it is. The inheritor of Naga's power is Julius' twin sister... Princess Julia.
Seliph: E-excuse me?!
Lewyn: Yeah, that was more or less my reaction too at first. Julia is Julius' twin sister... which also makes her your sister, Seliph.
Seliph: So all this time... Julia was my sister...
Lewyn: I guess now we know why Manfroy took her to begin with. Needless to say, Seliph, we've got to rescue her, no matter what. We absolutely need Julia's powers if we want any hope of stopping Julius!" — Lewyn andSeliph after seizing Dozel Castle inendgame,Fire Emblem: Genealogy of the Holy War - ↑"I understand now... All my life, I've heard tales about how the dragonkin feared becoming entangled in the sorry affairs of mankind. But you were different... You guided us where your kin never would. So long as the world lives on, humanity will never forget your kindness... Lewyn... No... A hero of a distant land.... Forseti of the Wind..." —Seliph's realization at theepilogue,Fire Emblem: Genealogy of the Holy War
- ↑"If I go back, I'll have no choice but to take the throne. It's my late father's will, but my uncles would never accept it. Just one false step and we'd have a civil war, just like here. And it's always the common folk who suffer for it!" — Lewyn inChapter 2,Fire Emblem: Genealogy of the Holy War
- ↑"Lewyn: You're that Sigurd fellow, aren't you? It's obvious what your little hobby is: war! Clearly you've got so much spare time, you spend it starting war after war!
Sigurd: Come again? You seem angry, but-
Lewyn: Don't play dumb! Think about the people of all the countries that you're flattening! You come barging in, swords flashing, and all you do is ruin the lives of normal folk who're trying to make a living here!
Sigurd: You're right. My apologies, Lewyn... I didn't even think about that, but I can't stand knowing I've done this to them.
Lewyn: Words are just words without actions backing them up. If you really feel so bad, then why not pull your army out?
Sigurd: Mm, you're right... Very well. I'll consult with my troops and arrange a retreat.
Lewyn: Wait, you're serious about this?
Sigurd: Of course. I've been mulling over retreating for a while already, and you just gave me the answer to all of this. I've had enough of the war approach. I think I'd rather seek a diplomatic answer.
Lewyn: Yeah, no. Trying to get through to Chagall now would be a total waste of everyone's time. Besides, if you lot pull out now, then nothing stands between a peeved king and all the citizens who've helped you so far. Are you sure you're okay with leaving them all hanging like that?
Sigurd: Well, no, but... Er... I...
Lewyn: Ahahaha! Y'know, I guess I was wrong about you. You're alright, Sigurd. Say, why don't I help you finish this fight up?" — Lewyn andSigurd inChapter 2,Fire Emblem: Genealogy of the Holy War - ↑"Phantoms or not, minds this great cannot fool themselves forever...
