Analysis
| This character analysis section may not be accurate to every player's experience. |
Leon is the first archer on Celica's route, and only one available unlessAtlas or a pitchforked unit is made an archer. This means he is the only unit who can attack enemy bow users and magic users with 1-3 range on enemy phase, and against 1-2 range magic users he is likely still the best candidate to take them on despite his low resistance. While his durability, especially on the magic side, is shaky, no other unit can replicate what he does, so it is worth giving him the investment he needs to perform his tasks. He notably wants 8 speed and 13 attack forAttack on the Desert Stronghold (provided he is given a max-forged Killer Bow), and as much extra resistance as is available for taking on enemy magic users.
Once he joins, Leon will mostly be providing valuable chip damage as he has decent base stats but is too frail to be a frontline combat unit like Saber. However, he will easily level up thanks to having the furthest range out of Celica's party and will likely promote toSniper at the end of Act 2. Leon becomes much more useful in Act 3, as he is the best combat unit in the desert chapters because of his aforementioned extended range and his ability to use theKiller Bow, either traded from Alm after he finishes his side of Act 3 or from forging it from theIron Bow. While the Killer Bow's stats are not particularly notable, he gains the powerful combat art Hunter's Volley from using it. Hunter's Volley has the notable effect of allowing its user to always double enemies. The only other units who can match Leon's range are the fliers, however, they have worse combat due to lower stats and not having Hunter's Volley, and they cannot replicate Leon's enemy phase duties and ability to safely chip. Near the end of Act 3 Leon, if used consistently, will be able to promote to a Bow Knight which will give him a notable increase in movement, along with his already extended range as a bow user, Leon will have incredible range allowing him to snipe far away enemies, a very notable thing when taking into account the often heavy penalty terrain of the maps inShadows of Valentia.
Overall, Leon is one of the strongest and most important units in Celica's army due almost entirely to his access to bows. While he does have a considerable investment cost, there is little overlap between the investment he needs and the investment other strong Celica route units want, as while units likeSaber andMae would want exp boosts from shrines or aGolden Apple, Leon doesn't need to promote faster than he normally does.

Personality
Leon is flamboyant and dramatic. He has a very close relationship to Valbar, describing him as his sworn brother and saying he will go wherever Valbar goes. InShadows of Valentia, it is made clear Leon's attachment to Valbar is romantic, with Leon saying that women do not interest him and Valbar is all he needs, even if Valbar is unaware of Leon's love for him. He tends to call Valbar "old friend". In the Japanese versions of bothGaiden andShadows of Valentia, he calls Valbar兄貴aniki, which literally means "older brother" but can be used in other contexts.
InGaiden, Leon uses thepersonal pronounおれore, which has a masculine connotation. However, in the Japanese version ofShadows of Valentia, Leon instead uses the personal pronounアタシatashi, which has a feminine connotation, and overall tends to speak in a feminine manner.

If Valbar survived
Welcomed into the One Kingdom's Brotherhood of Knights, Leon remained at Valbar's side until an injury ended his fighting career. He then took up work as a merchant in the city market, where he lived free, happy, and dauntlessly true to himself to the last.
If Valbar died
Dealt a grievous blow by Valbar's death, Leon disappeared for a time before returning to join the One Kingdom's Brotherhood of Knights. There, he fought with the strength of a hundred men, and later served as an instructor to new recruits, contributing greatly to the order.
