History
Origins
The Leicester Alliance was originally a territory of theAdrestian Empire. In Imperial Year 801, Leicester revolted against the Empire, and theHoly Kingdom of Faerghus occupied and annexed the region.[3] Leicester revolted against Faerghus in 881, leading to a war that would later be known as theCrescent Moon War.[4] Twenty years later, the Leiceser Alliance was officially formed after all opposing nobles had been subjugated.[5] The Alliance was governed by a roundtable of five noble families: Riegan, Gloucester, Goneril, Ordelia, and Daphnel. In 961, the eastern nation ofAlmyra launched an invasion of Fódlan, but the Alliance repelled them with military assistance from Adrestia.[6] In 1101, all three of Fódlan's nations cooperated to build Fódlan's Locket, a fortress on Leicester's eastern border created to protect the continent from further invasions from Almyra.[7]
Contemporary to the games
In 1171, House Hrym of the Empire attempted to defect to the Alliance with the aid of House Ordelia in response to Adrestian emperorIonius IX's attempts to centralize power, in what would come to be known as the "Hrym Rebellion".[8] The Empire suppressed the rebellion and occupied House Ordelia for some time.[9] In the 1170s, House Daphnel gave up its place as one of the Alliance's ruling families, and was replaced with House Edmund.[10] Duke Riegan was killed by monsters during an art deal with Count Gloucester, leaving the house's future in jeopardy. In 1179,Claude von Riegan, son of a minor Riegan noble and the king of Almyra, was legitimized as House Riegan's heir.
Three Houses
Late in 1180, EmperorEdelgard von Hresvelg of Adrestia, blaming theChurch of Seiros for the societal problems she believed were plaguing Fódlan, declared war on the Church and won the opening conflict in the Battle of Garreg Mach. After the battle, Claude returned to Leicester and took charge of the Alliance. The country was fractured between a faction who supported the Church, led by Houses Riegan and Goneril, and a faction who supported the Empire, led by Houses Gloucester and Ordelia. Claude spent five years creating conflict between the factions in an effort to maintain a pretense of neutrality.
On the Silver Snow route, Claude aided Resistance forces by attacking Gloucester's army so that the Resistance could seize the Great Bridge of Myrddin. He later led an invasion of the Empire, but was defeated and vanished after the Battle at Gronder. The Alliance effectively ceased to exist after Claude's defeat, and its territories were absorbed by the nascent United Kingdom of Fódlan.
On the Azure Moon route, Claude aided Kingdom forces by attacking Gloucester's army so that the Kingdom could seize the Great Bridge of Myrddin. He later led an invasion of the Empire, but was defeated and forced to retreat at the Battle at Gronder. Imperial forces led byVolkhard von Arundel took advantage of the damage done to Leicester to launch an invasion of the Alliance; Claude lured the Imperial forces to Derdriu, where the Kingdom army arrived to aid in routing the army. In the aftermath, Claude disbanded the Alliance and ceded its territories to the Kingdom.
On the Verdant Wind route, Byleth awoke from a coma late in 1185 and reunited with Claude atGarreg Mach Monastery, and the two led the Alliance in battle against the Empire. After retaking the monastery to use as a base of operations, Claude and his allies launched a campaign against Adrestia by taking the Great Bridge of Myrddin. After a three-way battle between Adrestia, Faerghus, and Leicester—resulting in the death ofDimitri and the effective end of the Kingdom—Claude seized Fort Merceus, then invaded Enbarr and killed Edelgard, ending the war. Afterwards, Claude learned ofthose who slither in the dark and attacked Shambhala, where he defeated both their leaderThales and the resurrectedNemesis. With peace established, Claude disbanded the Alliance and founded the United Kingdom of Fódlan to govern the continent under Byleth's rule.
On the Crimson Flower route, their reawakening decisively tipped the war in the Empire's favor. Adrestia invaded Leicester as a precursor to their conflict with the Kingdom and Church. Claude drew Adrestian forces to Derdriu with the intent of ending the conflict as quickly and with as few casualties as possible; he was defeated, and the Alliance was annexed into the Empire.
Warriors: Three Hopes
Shortly afterShez joins the Officer's Academy, theAlmyran princeShahid lead an invasion of Leicester, but was repelled byHolst and the Golden Deer. Following these events, as well as a crisis in the Empire and a succession crisis in the Kingdom, Rhea closed the officer's academy. Two years later, Edelgard declared war on the Church of Seiros, quickly capturedGarreg Mach Monastery, forced the Central Church to retreat to the Kingdom, and launched an invasion of the Kingdom and the Alliance.
On the Scarlet Blaze route,Count Gloucester feigned defection to the Empire and allowedCount Bergliez's army to cross the Great Bridge of Myrddin, trapping them; Edelgard lead an army to aid Bergliez's retreat, and the Empire's invasion of Leicester was halted. Six months later, the Alliance and the Empire make a pact with each other; from then on, the Alliance assists the empire in its campaign against the Kingdom. Depending on Shez's prior actions, the alliance possibly betrays the Empire during a decisive battle at Ailell.
On the Azure Gleam route, the Leicester Alliance makes a pact with the Kingdom, and assists them in defeating the Imperial army and recapturing Garreg Mach Monastery.
On the Golden Wildfire route, Count Gloucester feigned defection to the Empire, allowingFerdinand's army into the Alliance to trap them. After dealing with the invasion, the Alliance prepared a counterinvasion of the Empire, but was forced to retreat when Almyra launched another attack on Fódlan's Throat. Six months later, the Alliance was reformed into the Leicester Federation, and Claude was made its first king. The Federation made a pact with the Adrestian Empire, and joined them in their campaign against Faerghus and the Church. The Federation army quickly made way into the Kingdom and reachedFhirdiad, but was forced to return to its own territory due to an attack bythose who slither in the dark. After dealing with the attack, Leicester assisted the Imperial army in defending Garreg Mach Monastery, and chased Rhea and the Knights of Seiros to theTailtean Plains, where they successfully defeated Rhea. The Federation sued for peace, but the Empire and Kingdom's response is unknown.
Politics
As an alliance of nobles, the lords of the Alliance lack a king or emperor. The Leicester Alliance is instead governed by a roundtable of five of its most influential houses: Riegan, Gloucester, Goneril, Ordelia, and Edmund. Originally, House Edmund's spot was occupied by House Daphnel, but it was relinquished to House Edmund shortly before the games' events.[11]
Noble houses of Leicester
Power in the alliance is split among several noble families. Houses Riegan, Gloucester, Goneril, Ordelia, and Edmund make up the Alliance's roundtable, while several minor houses with significantly less political power exist.[12]

Locations of Leicester
Derdriu
Derdriu (pronounced /ˈdɛɹdɹu/[key]; Japanese:デアドラDeadora), also known by the nicknamethe Aquatic capital (Japanese:水上都市aquatic city), is the capital of the Leicester Alliance. It is located in Riegan territory. In the time ofThree Houses, Derdriu is where the Alliance lords gather to hold roundtable conferences. It owes its nickname to its harbor and to its streets, which are said to seem as though they are floating on the water.[13]
InThree Houses, Derdriu is visited during Part I in the paralogueSword and Shield of Seiros, where theKnights of Seiros defend the city against an invasion by pirates on behalf of theEastern Church. It is visited again during Part II on the Azure Moon and Crimson Flower routes. InAzure Moon Chapter 19, at Claude's behest, the Kingdom army helps to prevent an Imperial seizure of Derdriu led byLord Arundel, which nearly succeeds prior to their arrival. On the Crimson Flower route, Derdriu is visited duringChapter 14, where Claude attempts to make a final stand against the invading Imperial army at the capital; although he receives help from theAlmyran army, he is defeated in battle, which results in the Alliance being claimed by the Empire.
InWarriors: Three Hopes, Derdriu is visited on the Golden Wildfire route, where it is besieged by imperial troops lead byFerdinand. The battle ends when the Alliance army manages to defend the city and drive out the Imperial army with the help ofHolst.
Ailell
Ailell (pronounced /ˈeɪ.ɪl.ɛl/[key]; Japanese:アリルAilell), also known as theValley of Torment (Japanese:煉獄の谷Purgatory valley), is a location in the Leicester Alliance. Located in Daphnel territory, along the border toFaerghus, it is a volcanic wasteland that is avoided by most people of Fódlan.
According to legend, the state of Ailell is the result of the goddess's judgement. Supposedly, it was destroyed by a pillar of light as a response to humanity's corruption.[14] In truth, the pillar was an attack by theAgarthans that was meant to hitGarreg Mach Monastery, but changed directions and hit Ailell instead.[15]
During the events ofThree Houses, it is the location ofIngrid andDorothea'sparalogue as they escape through the valley when they are chased by Ingrid's suitor's troops. In all non-Crimson Flower routes, it later acts as a strategic location between the Kingdom and the Alliance and as a rendezvous point with the troops stationed at the monastery. On the Azure Moon route,Rodrigue meets up with the Kingdom army at Ailell, while on the Verdant Wind and Silver Snow routes,Judith meets up with the Alliance and Resistance armies, respectively. In either case, the valley becomes the location of an ambush by the Faerghus Dukedom led byGwendal, who is ultimately defeated in battle.
InWarriors: Three Hopes, the valley is a strategic location due to its proximity to Garreg Mach Monastery, acting as the escape route used by the Church afterEdelgard seized the monastery. From there, they are granted shelter by the Kingdom. Ailell later becomes the location of key battles on all routes. On the Scarlet Blaze route, it is the location of a decisive battle between the Empire, the Kingdom, the Alliance, and the knights of Seiros. After the battle, the Kingdom is forced to retreat andSeteth andFlayn go into hiding, and, depending on the player's actions,Claude can end up slain in battle. From there, the Imperial army marches on to their final battle againstRhea andThales at the monastery. On the Azure Göeam route, Ailell is again important due to its proximity to the monastery, as the combined Kingdom and Alliance armies attempt to reach the monastery through it. In the Golden Wildfire route, it is instead the location of a battle between the Church army, led byCatherine and the Imperial army, led byRandolph. Both of them are killed in battle, ultimately prompting Randolph's sisterFleche to hire Jeralt's Mercenaries to avenge her brother.
Great Bridge of Myrddin

TheGreat Bridge of Myrddin (pronounced /ˈmɝdɪn/[key]; Japanese:ミルディン大橋Myrddin great bridge) is a bridge that spans theAirmid River (pronounced /ˈɛɹɪmɪd/[key] or /ˈɛɹmɪd/[key]; Japanese:アミッドAirmid), which separates the Leicester Alliance from theAdrestian Empire. It was created for emperorWilhelm I, the first emperor of the Adrestian Empire, and is constructed like a military fortification.[16] It connects Phlegethon territory in the north and Bergliez territory in the south.[17] It is controlled by house Gloucester of the Leicester Alliance.
InThree Houses, the Great Bridge of Myrddin is visited during Part II of all routes. On non-Crimson Flower routes, it acts as the battlefield forChapter 16, where the player's army captures it to secure a path into the Empire. On the Crimson Flower route, the Adrestian Empire instead captures it to invade the Leicester Alliance.
InWarriors: Three Hopes, the bridge appears on the Scarlet Blaze and Golden Wildfire routes. On the Scarlet Blaze route,Count Gloucester initially swears loyalty to the Empire and allows them to pass the Great Bridge of Myrddin, but later betrays them in an attempt to corner the Imperial troops lead byCount Bergliez. In response, Edelgard's army moves to defeat Count Gloucester and take back the Great Bridge of Myrddin. On the Golden Wildfire route, the bridge acts as the battlefield for the main mission duringChapter 4, where the Alliance army attempts to defend it from the invading Imperial army. Count Gloucester eventually defects to the Empire, forcing the Alliance army to retreat. Count Gloucester eventually reveals that he only pretended to have defected, and betrays the Imperial army, bringing the Great Bridge of Myrddin back under Alliance control.
Fódlan's Throat

Fódlan's Throat is a large mountain range located in the east of Goneril territory. In Imperial Year 961, Almyran forces crossed Fódlan's Throat and invaded Alliance territory; the invasion was successfully driven off with the help of theAdrestian Empire.[18] In Imperial Year 1101, all three nations of Fódlan joined forces and created a fortress at Fódlan's Throat, which would later be known as Fódlan's Locket.[19] House Goneril was charged with the task of operating the fortress. Due to the frequent battles with the neighboring Almyra, several bands of warriors and mercenaries have gathered in Goneril territory.[20]
InThree Houses, Fódlan's Locket is visited during the paraloguesDividing the World andInsurmountable, whereByleth and their army have to fend off attacks from Almyra. It is also a possible location forauxiliary battles.
InWarriors: Three Hopes, Fódlan's Locket is visited duringChapter 3 of the Golden Deer route, where the Golden Deer assistHolst in defending against an Almyran invasion lead by PrinceShahid, forcing him to retreat. InChapter 8, Shahid attempts a second invasion that ends with several Almyrans defecting to the Alliance army, and his ultimate defeat.
Caledonian Plateau
TheCaledonian Plateau is a large plateau located near the source of the Airmid river in Burgundy territory. It is notable for its fish, theCaledonian Gar and theCaledonian Crayfish. InThree Houses, it is the location of the final battle of the Verdant Wind route, serving as the battlefield between the Alliance army and the resurrectedNemesis and his forces.
Edgaria
Edgaria is the capital of Gloucester territory. It is home to many artists' workshops.[21]
Kupala
Kupala (pronounced /kuˈpɑlə/[key]; Japanese:クパーラKupala) is a small, independent region that lies in Edmund territory, on the fringe of Fódlan's Throat. Despite being located in Alliance territory, it is only considered part of the Alliance by technicality. As the people of Kupala largely keep to themselves,[22] numerous rumors have spread about them across Fódlan.[23] It is said that a village elder of Kupala once gave its wounded soldiers a red substance that killed some who used it, and caused others to manifestcrests.[24]Balthus's mother hails from Kupala.
